City Atlas: New Haven highlights sustainability initiatives in New Haven with the goal of creating a greener, better city. It features projects and connects residents to help the city meet its sustainability goals. Modeled after other City Atlas sites, it aims to strengthen ties between social justice, sustainability, and community building through local news, events, and ways for people to take action. The site relies on community contributions from students, organizations, and residents to showcase positive work making New Haven more sustainable.

City Atlas highlights the good initiatives happening throughout New
Haven with the goal of working together toward a greener, greater
future for the city.

3. PURPOSE
People engage when news is locally oriented, gives them a way to take action, and shows other taking
action as well.
We feature and promote the sustainability goals of New Haven, and help connect members of the commu-
nity to the city’s new initiatives and civic organizations. We aim to strengthen the ties between social jus-
tice, sustainability, and community building.
City Atlas: New Haven is modeled on City Atlas: New York (newyork.thecityatlas.org) and is the beginning of
a network of sites in partnership with universities, drawing on talented young people to create a new,
locally relevant platform for a public conversation about the future. Projects are beginning in China, at
beijing.thecityatlas.org, in Sydney, Australia, and in Washington, D.C. as well.
Our bottom-up publication highlights the good initiatives happening throughout the city with the goal of
working toward a greener, greater future for New Haven. City Atlas seeks to normalize the idea of sustain-
ability, and to present a vivid image of the good life that can unfold as we respond to the coming changes.

4. THE CITY ATLAS STORY
The world will be changing rapidly through the next few years, as society begins to adapt
to a shifting climate and to the challenges of making modern cities ideal, livable
environments.
City Atlas is a New Havenite’s comprehensive guide to events, ideas, and actions that are
positively impacting and forming our city’s future.
We like to think of ourselves as a bottom-up sustainability plan for New Haven that
works best with your participation! The Atlas reflects the good work that individuals,
organizations, businesses, cultural institutions, and everyone else (!) does to move our
city toward a more sustainable version of itself.
Basically, we aggregate a lot of good stuff and show you how some of our lived culture is
already moving us in the right direction.
City Atlas is built by and for New Havenites.
And just like this city, it relies on science, creativity, and community!
