7.3 The Southern Economy
The Southern economy relied on cash crops like tobacco in Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina due to their dry, cool climates, and rice in South Carolina and Georgia due to their wet, hot climates. Indigo was also a major cash crop in South Carolina after Eliza Pinckney developed a way to produce blue dye from it. The economy grew through interdependence as goods were exported through brokers to major ports like Baltimore, Norfolk, Wilmington, Charles Town and Savannah. Forests in North Carolina provided wood and the South dominated shipbuilding.
7.2 Life in the South
Life in the South centered around large plantations that grew cash crops like tobacco and cotton. Most plantations functioned like small villages, with slaves performing various jobs under the supervision of an overseer. Though slaves faced cruel treatment, including beatings, they maintained aspects of their culture such as religious faith expressed through singing. Some slaves escaped bondage by running away or buying their freedom.
7.1 Settling the Southern Colonies
Maryland was founded by English Catholics seeking religious freedom led by George Calvert. It was carefully planned to avoid failure. Tobacco became a major cash crop, though most colonists struggled as indentured servants on farms. In 1649, Maryland passed the Toleration Act allowing religious freedom for Christians. Colonists then moved south, establishing the Carolinas with a written constitution. The colony became too large and split into North and South Carolina. Georgia was founded to gain control of the area, settling debtors who had to defend the land but could start anew, though slavery was eventually allowed and plantations increased. Settlers also moved westward for more land.
6.3 Busy Farms and Seaports
The middle colonies had fertile soil that supported prosperous farming, including the growing of wheat. Farmers could either grind their wheat into flour using local gristmills, or sell the unground wheat. The main rivers, the Hudson and Delaware, supported trade by providing access to seaports, bringing economic success through exports of goods like furs, meat, and lumber, and imports including furniture, tea, and slaves, with all trade occurring with England. Various craftspeople like blacksmiths, coopers, and carpenters found work through apprenticeships.
6.2 Life in the Middle Colonies
The Middle Colonies attracted a mix of immigrants from Dutch, French, Belgian, and Swedish backgrounds who sought a better life. The Great Awakening religious movement in the region was led by George Whitefield and emphasized emotional, personal faith and tolerance of differing views. People of many religious groups lived together in the Middle Colonies and enjoyed community barn raisings and other social events in their free time. The largest city, Philadelphia, was purposefully designed and grew under leaders like Benjamin Franklin who established important civic institutions.
5.3 New England's Economy
New England's economy grew as farming became more productive, leading to trade between colonists. The dense forests provided materials for a shipbuilding industry, with ships exported throughout England's colonies. Whaling and fishing also developed into important exports. However, England maintained tight control over trade, only permitting the colonies to trade with England and benefitting from the ability to set colonial goods' prices. The triangular trade routes transported slaves from Africa to the Americas, though many died during the treacherous Middle Passage journey.
6.1 The Middle Colonies
The Middle Colonies of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware were settled in the mid-1600s. The Dutch originally controlled New Netherland, but it was taken over by the English in 1664 and divided into New York and New Jersey. Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn in 1681 as a place for Quakers and others to practice religious freedom. Penn also established fair treatment of Native Americans. The region became known as the "Breadbasket Colonies" due to its fertile land and farming of grains like wheat, corn, and rye.
5.2 Life in New England
Puritan life in New England was centered around their strict religious beliefs. Everyone attended long church services on Sundays and faced punishment for any infractions. Small towns were tightly knit, centered around a common area, and people primarily bartered instead of using money. Men and women had distinct gender roles, with women handling domestic tasks like cooking, cleaning, and crafts while men farmed, hunted, and did manual labor. Children helped their families but also attended the important Puritan schools to learn to read from hornbooks.
5.1 Settling New England
The Puritans arrived in Massachusetts in 1628 and 1630, establishing the settlements of Salem and Boston respectively. John Winthrop led the second group and hoped Boston would be an example of Christian living. In 1630, Winthrop became governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony and established strict religious laws. Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson were expelled for their dissenting religious beliefs, leading them to establish Providence and Rhode Island respectively. Other settlements like Hartford and Portsmouth were also established, contributing to New England's growth. However, this expansion caused conflicts with Native Americans over land, culminating in the devastating King Philip's War of 1675.

land.

like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover

- 3. CONTACT • Email me! Email is more convenient for communication. It leaves a written record of our conversations and I am able to respond outside of school. (I check email constantly at home!) • If you have a transportation change in the afternoon, call the front office!
- 4. COMMUNICATION • I send home a weekly email on Monday. • I handle behavior and academic situations with students first before communicating home. • I maintain a website with resources and tools students can use at home and at school.

CLASSROOM PHILOSOPHY • Our goal is to transition students into middle school • High expectations on attitude, work ethic, respect, and especially responsibility • I accept very few excuses , but provide an environment where students shouldn’t need them! • My personal goal is to help students mature and think for themselves as they begin the next steps in their academic career
- 6. CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR • I follow the color system used school-wide. • Reminder: Yellow means slow down. It does NOT mean a student should be punished or involve communication home. • Incentives are offered both by me and the school for positive behavior, such as Gator Heads and Gator Tickets. • I communicate home about behavior if it is a repeated issue that the student is not working toward improving.
- 7. HOMEWORK • Expect homework 3-4 nights a week. It will usually be Math and Spelling. • Although I encourage planner use daily, I do not require them. If students continually forget homework, they become required. • Forgetting homework results in study hall during recess. Repeated missing work will be resolved through parent contact.
