The City of Evansville has been planning an expansion of their public library since 2004 to better serve the growing population. The expansion, scheduled to be built in 2018, will add new group study rooms, a business resource center, expanded technology and computer areas, a larger children's section, and a dedicated teen area. It will also preserve the library's local history collection with an expanded room. Voters will decide on funding for the expansion through a ballot measure on November 8.
The document summarizes the results of a survey of Dutch public librarians about the future of music collections. It finds that while physical lending of sheet music is currently low and expected to decrease, the majority of librarians are positive about the future of digital sheet music collections. They believe digitization of sheet music will increase availability and access, though many libraries currently face bottlenecks like lack of time, funds or legal issues that limit digitization efforts. Overall, the future of music in public libraries appears to be shifting from physical to digital formats.
The library is located on the Folly Lane campus upstairs behind reception. It is open to students for researching materials in various fields and meeting with friends. Students need their enrollment card to access the library and its resources, which include an online catalog, magazines, DVDs, and books. Basic art supplies are also sold in the library shop using debit cards. Various rules apply to borrowing materials and a quiet study room is available by reservation.
Libraries in the UK, especially those in London boroughs, have seen significant increases in visitors over the past few years, with one library seeing a 96% increase. This is largely due to the availability of fast, reliable, and free internet access provided by libraries. While many households now have internet access at home, there are still some who need access at libraries for activities like applying for jobs, school places, housing and permits as more government services move online. Libraries aim to support these needs through technology training classes, one-on-one sessions, and accredited learning programs to help patrons develop IT skills.
This document discusses the role of public libraries in providing digital resources and support to patrons in the 21st century. It describes how GLL, which manages libraries in London, provides a range of physical and virtual ICT resources including computers, WiFi, online resources, and classes to encourage digital literacy. GLL recognizes its responsibility to serve as technology hubs and help patrons engage with technology. It is working to expand its digital offerings through initiatives like a mobile Library LAB, increased social media presence, and virtual programs. The document stresses that ICT ensures the continued relevance of libraries.
This document summarizes activities related to gardening centres in the Czech Republic. It discusses a campaign called Colour Your Life that provides materials to support over 325 gardening centres and sales outlets. It also describes the top 28 gardening centres that offer excellent customer service. The document notes that new gardening centres are continually being founded and the selection and quality of plants and materials is rising. It discusses EU support for gardening centres and ways the centres promote themselves through various media like websites, radio, TV and exhibitions.

Technology & Libraries: An inevitable Partnership by Anwer EjazAta Rehman
- Technology and libraries have had an inevitable partnership throughout history, from the earliest uses of punch cards for cataloging in the late 19th century to today's digital libraries.
- Libraries have progressed through three ages of automation: computerizing operations in the 1950s-1980s, rising public access in the 1980s, and electronic content in the 1990s to today.
- Academic libraries now aim to advance digital scholarship and be hubs for collaboration, going beyond just accessing knowledge to creating it. They must respond to campus needs and infuse technology into all services.
Public libraries around the world are undergoing significant transitions as they rethink their buildings and spaces. The document summarizes research and workshops with library managers from 17 countries to identify criteria for building new public libraries. Key findings include that new libraries should be flexible community hubs and learning centers that incorporate technology, prioritize user needs, and act as civic landmarks. Recommendations are that libraries must adapt to trends like being lifelong learning centers, collaboration spaces, and cultural institutions, while continuing to provide collections and a welcoming environment for all.
IFLA ARL Webinar Series: Academic Library Services during Covid 19IFLAAcademicandResea

Thank you for the insightful discussion. Libraries play an important role in communities, and good design is critical to meeting user needs. I'm afraid I don't have enough context about your local libraries to comment specifically. The most important thing is for libraries to continually assess how to best serve their communities through flexible, user-centered spaces and services.
This document discusses trends in modern libraries. It covers trends in library buildings, furniture, users, resources, technologies, services, and professional skills. Some key points include renovating libraries with more open spaces for groups and cafes, increasing electronic resources and mobile access, using technologies like GPS and customized recommendations, and developing new librarian skills in areas like usability, metadata, and marketing. The goal is to make libraries more relevant and responsive to changing user needs and technologies.
This document discusses challenges facing monograph publishing and collecting in libraries. It notes that the market for monographs is shrinking as library budgets have not kept pace with growing information outputs. Individual monographs are discretionary purchases, so sales are declining and prices are increasing. It explores alternatives to the traditional "just in case" model of collecting all monographs, such as "just in time" access and collective ownership through shared storage facilities. Potential solutions discussed include new publishing models that reduce costs and risks, and increasing open access to disseminate research more widely. A national monograph strategy is being developed in the UK to address these issues through a shared infrastructure and new applications and business models.
Making Open the Default in Scholarly Communication, and the Implications for ...SPARC Europe
This document summarizes a presentation about making open access the default in scholarly communication and implications for libraries. The key points are:
1) Open access promises to remove barriers to access, reduce costs, and increase research impact, but is not yet the norm due to obstacles like assessment systems rewarding prestige publications and a culture that does not incentivize open practices.
2) Libraries can help by advocating for policy changes, educating researchers, and reallocating resources from licensing to supporting open infrastructure and services.
3) Significant changes are needed as the system transitions to open access as the default, including collaboration between libraries and reallocation of resources, in order to ensure libraries remain relevant in the future scholarly ecosystem

The document summarizes plans for a new central library in Helsinki, Finland. It discusses the need for libraries to serve as modern community hubs rather than just repositories for books. The proposed new central library would be 25,000 square meters, with space for library services, events, commercial activities, and potential locations in downtown Helsinki. It aims to attract 1.5 million visitors annually and establish Helsinki as a leader in forward-thinking library design.
Gallery One at the Cleveland Museum of Art has had great success in its first year of operation. It has received numerous design awards and over 150 museums have visited to learn from its innovative use of technology to enhance the visitor experience. Technology is used to help visitors understand and engage with art in new ways rather than being the primary focus. The space was designed through collaboration between many departments and continues to evaluate and improve based on visitor feedback. Looking ahead, Gallery One 2.0 will further integrate digital strategies museum-wide and continue innovating to provide the best visitor experience.
The document discusses Europeana, a digital platform that provides access to over 30 million digitized cultural heritage objects from European libraries, museums, archives, and audiovisual collections. It outlines Europeana's history, from early projects linking national libraries online in the 2000s to its current role as one of the European Commission's Digital Service Infrastructures. The document also describes how Europeana supports reuse of cultural content through pilot applications, challenges for entrepreneurs, and an open laboratory network called Europeana Labs. Living labs are discussed as real-life environments where users and producers co-create innovations.

Carrer goals.pptx and their importance in real lifeartemacademy2
Career goals serve as a roadmap for individuals, guiding them toward achieving long-term professional aspirations and personal fulfillment. Establishing clear career goals enables professionals to focus their efforts on developing specific skills, gaining relevant experience, and making strategic decisions that align with their desired career trajectory. By setting both short-term and long-term objectives, individuals can systematically track their progress, make necessary adjustments, and stay motivated. Short-term goals often include acquiring new qualifications, mastering particular competencies, or securing a specific role, while long-term goals might encompass reaching executive positions, becoming industry experts, or launching entrepreneurial ventures.
Moreover, having well-defined career goals fosters a sense of purpose and direction, enhancing job satisfaction and overall productivity. It encourages continuous learning and adaptation, as professionals remain attuned to industry trends and evolving job market demands. Career goals also facilitate better time management and resource allocation, as individuals prioritize tasks and opportunities that advance their professional growth. In addition, articulating career goals can aid in networking and mentorship, as it allows individuals to communicate their aspirations clearly to potential mentors, colleagues, and employers, thereby opening doors to valuable guidance and support. Ultimately, career goals are integral to personal and professional development, driving individuals toward sustained success and fulfillment in their chosen fields.

Suzanne Lagerweij - Influence Without Power - Why Empathy is Your Best Friend...Suzanne Lagerweij
This is a workshop about communication and collaboration. We will experience how we can analyze the reasons for resistance to change (exercise 1) and practice how to improve our conversation style and be more in control and effective in the way we communicate (exercise 2).
This session will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
Abstract:
Let’s talk about powerful conversations! We all know how to lead a constructive conversation, right? Then why is it so difficult to have those conversations with people at work, especially those in powerful positions that show resistance to change?
Learning to control and direct conversations takes understanding and practice.
We can combine our innate empathy with our analytical skills to gain a deeper understanding of complex situations at work. Join this session to learn how to prepare for difficult conversations and how to improve our agile conversations in order to be more influential without power. We will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
In the session you will experience how preparing and reflecting on your conversation can help you be more influential at work. You will learn how to communicate more effectively with the people needed to achieve positive change. You will leave with a self-revised version of a difficult conversation and a practical model to use when you get back to work.
Come learn more on how to become a real influencer!

• Open shelves – the ”open access revolution” (Alistair Black, 1994) – UK 1994 – US
earlier
• Automated Self-delivery and Self-checkout of library materials - from the 1990s
and onwards
• Open libraries – the ”open library revolution” (Johannsen 2017)

OPEN LIBRARIES IN SEVEN COUNTRIES(1)
• Which public library was the first with Open libraries?
– Gjern (Denmark) or Singapore?
• Gjern – established in 2004
• Singapore – opened in 2002
– Silly question or:
• Gjern branch library was the first staff-less library with a particular self-lock-in-
procedure
• Singapore was the first staff-less library – but located within a larger shopping
mall

OPEN LIBRARIES IN SEVEN COUNTRIES(2)
• Denmark, Finland, Germany, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom & the United
States
• Differences as to spread and growth rates
• Other differences: the use of surveillance technology and CCTV is restricted in
Sweden
• Why differences? Variable explanations – fear of vandalism, trust levels, social
capital, courage, …

OPEN LIBRARIES IN SEVEN COUNTRIES(4)
• Opening hours per week:
– Denmark (2011): 20 h staffed / 69 h unstaffed (average)
• Only very few totally staff-less libraries
• Vandalism:
– Rare (in all seven countries) – much less than expected!
– Occurs mostly in urban areas
• Resistance:
– Mostly among librarians – local politicians and library leaders, on the contrary,
most often adherents
– experienced in e.g. Sweden and Denmark: resistance tends to diminish after
implementation

OPEN LIBRARIES IN SEVEN COUNTRIES(5)
• Patterns: staffed and unstaffed opening hours:
– Denmark 2011(averages):
• Total staffed opening hours per week: 20 (22%)
• Total unstaffed opening hours per week: 69 (78%)
– The latest figures suggest an increased percentage of staffed opening hours
– In all seven countries the open libraries are seen as an increasing trend
– A spread from rural and suburban to urban neighborhoods is a common trend

7 TECHNOLOGICAL REQUIREMENTS (1)
• A modern open library representsa highly technological solution:
– Technological interfaces to the building (door locks, light control, security alarms,
sound announcements, etc.)
– Library management system integration
– Video surveillance (except in Sweden)
– RFID
13. #AXIELLEU201
7 TECHNOLOGICAL REQUIREMENTS (2)
• Future developments within the Open library:
– The ”transformative library” – screens in the library automatically adapt to the
present users’ particular wants and needs
• More focused and better communication with the users outside the staffed
opening hours
• Testing of open libraries with eight different modes (e.g. children 6-12 years
old. News, crime, fiction, etc.
– Open mobile libraries

OPEN LIBRARY USERS (1)
• Several user surveys have documented that the users are excited by the Open
libraries
• Numbers of loans and visits are, generally, increased when an Open Library is
established
• But:
– The excited Open Library users were not at all displeased with the service of the
existing staff
• Indeed:
– The key benefit gained through Open Library is prolonged opening hours at a
reasonable price

7 OPEN LIBRARY USERS (2)
• Who are the Open Library users?
– Commuters, especially like the Open libraries?
– A recent Danish user survey indicates that especially people with an origin
different than Danish prefer the Open library model
– Also already enthusiastic library users, like the cultural super user segment, like
Open Libraries
– Flexible physical access is an important user interest
– Open libraries are popular both among students and elderly users
– Data from Open libraries indicate that 71 % of the users are within the
economically active age

OPEN LIBRARY USERS (3)
• Usage patterns:
– Visits per hour during the staffed opening hours still outnumbers the visits during
the un-staffed
– Differences may be exaggerated because of different data collection methods
during the staffed and un-staffed opening hours
– Typical loaner statement:
• ”I use the library when it fits me best”
– More study and work during the un-staffed opening hours
19. #AXIELLEU201

OPEN LIBRARY USERS (4)
• Importance of a proper balance between staffed and un-staffed:
– Poor experiences as to visits and loans with totally, all-time, un-staffed libraries
– The evidence unclear as to the ideal distribution between staffed and un-staffed
opening hours
– Open libraries are supported by representative user surveys
