Amazon Web Services puts on-demand infrastructure at your fingertips, making it easy and cost effective to spin up new environments for developing and running your applications. But when things scale out, the number of pieces of infrastructure to manage and configure increases. This webinar introduces two frameworks, Amazon Elastic Beanstalk and Amazon Cloud Formation, both built into the AWS cloud that can help you manage your technical assets as you grow.
This session will feature best practices in the real world for deploying AWS cloud services. You will hear about cloud use cases, governance, security, cloud architecture, optimizing costs, and leveraging appropriate support offerings. The session will provide insight into experience from hundreds of government customers’ AWS adoption and highlight lessons learned along the way.
Running Microservices and Docker with AWS Elastic BeanstalkAmazon Web Services
In this session, we introduce you to a solution for easily running a Docker-powered microservices architecture on AWS using Elastic Beanstalk. We will also cover the fundamentals of Elastic Beanstalk and how it benefits developers looking for a quick and scalable way to get their applications running on AWS with no infrastructure work required.
Building a microservices architecture using Docker can require a lot of work, from launching and operating the underlying infrastructure to installing and maintaining cluster management software. With AWS Elastic Beanstalk’s multicontainer support feature, many of these tasks are simplified and abstracted away so you can focus on your application code. AWS Elastic Beanstalk is an easy-to-use service for deploying and scaling web applications and services developed with Java, .NET, PHP, Node.js, Python, Ruby, Go, and Docker. Elastic Beanstalk leverages Amazon EC2 Container Service for its container management capabilities.

Are you looking to build the next viral Facebook application or mobile game? Are you worried about the viral growth of your web application? Are you tired of managing servers and installing software? This session introduces AWS Elastic Beanstalk, the easiest way to deploy and manage web applications on AWS. We’ll show you how you can write your application and let Elastic Beanstalk do the rest.
(DVO313) Building Next-Generation Applications with Amazon ECSAmazon Web Services
Two trends are driving app development: The shift from the server-based web to rich applications that run on a diverse set of mobile devices and modern browsers, and the growth of microservices running in the cloud that serve these clients. The results are “connected clients” - apps with the processing power of the device that are statefully connected and scaled to the cloud. In this session, you will learn about the architecture for Meteor's JavaScript app platform, Galaxy, which uses Amazon ECS, Elastic Load Balancing, and AWS CloudFormation to provide highly available, scalable, isolated environments for stateful apps across browsers and devices. We will discuss the essential characteristics of the platform, how those are provided for, and why we decided to use Amazon ECS instead of alternatives, such as Kubernetes. We will also demonstrate the Galaxy system in production.

At this joint NYC Cloud Foundry and NY PHP meetup, we'll discuss the shift to Platform-as-a-Service and what it means for PHP development on the cloud.
First, we'll take a look at the "traditional" cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (virtual servers and disks) model and describe how Platform-as-a-Service builds upon it to provide the runtimes and data services for hosting PHP applications.
We'll then demonstrate how a PHP developer can use buildpacks and services within a Cloud Foundry PaaS to deploy scalable and resilient apps to his or her cloud of choice.
Along the way we'll compare the variety of buildpacks available to PHP developers, show techniques for binding to services, and highlight best practices for creating born-on-the-cloud apps based on a microservices architecture.
Special thanks to Dan Mikusa for helping with the buildpack comparison.
PHP developers: Please give all three build packs a try. Provide your feedback and submit pull requests on GitHub.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
