Yearbook Course 2010 (2011)
AWE3M/4M
If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people
together to collect wood and don't assign them tasks
and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless
immensity of the sea. ~Antoine de Saint-Exupery
 This is an in-school CREDIT course that
addresses the multifaceted needs of the
beginning journalism student by introducing
them to all phases of yearbook production.
 Students in this course will learn the skills of:
 Journalism,
 Layout & Design,
 Marketing,
 Sales & Advertising,
 Photography, and
 Graphic Design.
 Students will also master Adobe Photoshop
and PageMaker/InDesign, and the art of
digital photography and photo enhancement.
 Classroom activities are closely related to the
real world of interviewing, reporting, meeting
deadlines and producing a widely viewed
publication.
This isn’t your regular course…
• MISSING DEADLINES COSTS MONEY.
•Students are expected to put forth a sincere effort at all
times and must complete and submit all assignments.
•Regular attendance and punctuality are essential to ensure
success in this course.
•Should a student miss a class due to illness or any legitimate
reason, they are expected to catch up on all work they
missed and see the teachers, editors and team members to
ensure that all the material covered in class is clearly
understood and their responsibilities have been met.
A variety of assessment and
evaluation techniques will be
used to foster student success.
Some examples are individual
and group presentations,
portfolios, constant self
assessment and feedback, and
the development of a Journal to
track individual work in and out
of the classroom setting. (See
theYearbook Contract).
Work and Study Habits will also
be assessed on an on-going
basis through the use of the
following tools:Yearbook
Master Rubric, Responsibility
Rubric, Skill Area Rubrics, and
through student accuracy and
ability to meet deadlines.
ALL evaluations are individual. There are no group marks.
This is a UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE level course.
Evaluation will be done according to the
Achievement Chart addressing the following areas:
•Knowledge & Understanding (20-25%)
•Thinking and Inquiry (15-20%)
•Communication (15-20%)
•Application (40-50%)
Possible uses of technology include computers (software),
photocopiers/printers, and photographic cameras.
Assessment of Portfolios, Sketchbooks/Journals/Duo Tangs and/ or
Information Files fits into the ‘TERM’ portion of the mark.
Communication receives more emphasis as the curriculum becomes more
content -oriented in the Senior grades (especially for “M” courses).
ALL evaluations are individual. There are no group marks.
70% of evaluation will be from a ‘TERM’ mark:
•Skill Building Assignments (Application, Communication)
•Quizzes and Tests (K/U)
•Yearbook Journal/Duo Tang (T/I)
•Mid Course Examination/Test/Assignment (K/U, Application, Communication)
