Kira's parents have died, so local women want her land. Fearing for her life, Kira goes before the Council of Guardians to argue her case and is allowed to live. Due to her talents, she goes to live in the Council of the Edifice. Eventually, her friend Mat finds her long-lost father and brings him to her, but she learns her mother was poisoned and her Defender killed her father.
