Introduction
A drilling machine, called a drill press, is used to cut holes into
or through metal, wood, or other materials. Drilling machines
may be used to perform other operations.They can perform
counter sinking, boring, counter boring,spot facing, reaming,
and tapping. In this arrangement we presented a concept of
control for automated micro-drilling, “cluster” type, in which
several miniature robots, piezoelectric trained, are used to
transport the piece of work to hold and to permit the micro-
borer introduction.

What Is Drilling Machine.. ?
• Drilling machine can actually be defined as a power operated
machine tool which consists of a drill in its spindle that rotate
and when moved in a linear motion against on to the
workpiece can produce circular hole on it.
• A drilling machine normally consists of a part like base to
support the machine, a work table to support the workpiece,
drilling head which revolves the cutting tools and a radial arm.
This machine employes a gearing mechanism to drill a hole
into the workpiece.

Hardware Components
1. Microcontroller ATMEGA8 :
The Atmel ATmega8 is a powerful microcontroller that provides a
highly-flexible and cost-effective solution to many embedded
control applications . The ATmega8 is supported with a full suite
of program and system development tools, including C compilers,
macro assemblers, program simulators, and evaluation kits. It has
23 Programmable I/O Lines.

2. L293D Motor Driver IC:
L293D is a dual h-bridge motor driver, so with one IC we can
interface two DC motors which can be controlled in both
clockwise and anticlockwise direction.L293D has output
current of 600mA and peak output current of 1.2A per
channel.

3. Brushed DC Motor :
Brushed DC motor types have some performance advantages
over direct-current, excited, synchronous types, and have
become predominant in fractional horsepower applications.
They are smaller, lighter, more efficient and reliable than
other electric machines. In this research, one DC motor is
used for drill. The motor selected for MSR is the 12V DC
motor.

Types of Drilling Process
1. Reaming :
A reamer enters the workpiece axially and enlarges an
existing hole to the diameter of the tool.

2. Countersinking :
A countersink tool enlarges the top portion of an existing hole
to a cone-shaped opening.
Countersinking is performed after drilling to provide space for
the head of a fastener, such as a screw, to sit flush with the
workpiece surface.

3. Counterboring :
A counterbore tool enlarges the top portion of an existing hole
to the diameter of the tool.
Counterboring is often performed after drilling to provide
space for the head of a fastener, such as a bolt, to sit flush with
the workpiece surface.

Advantages
Intelligent PCB drilling machine can be used continuously 24
hours a day,365 days in a year and need to switch on occasional
maintenance.
Less skilled/trained people can intelligent PCB drilling machine
unlike manual lathes/milling machine ,etc which need skilled
engineers.
Modern design software allow the designer to simulate the
manufacture of his/her idea .There is no need to make a prototype.

Drilling machines may be used to perform other operations
like it can perform countersinking, boring, counterboring,
spot facing, reaming, and tapping.

Future Scope
• The drilling head assembly with slide can be replaced by other
equipment like to weling gun /gas welding equipment thus
making it a multifunctional machine.
• The drilling machine can be made more advanced automated
by using advanced motors ,software technologies ,controllers,
etc.
• The introduction of dedicated automation equipment improved
productivity, reduced defect rate, and reduced quality
dispersion.

Conclusion
The prototype developed is a technical platform that enables
the development of some accuracy studies of micro
positioning with a large impact on the design of new command
and control hardware units.
The introduction of dedicated automation equipment greatly
reduced the potential for safety accidents from tasks.
The introduction of dedicated automation equipment improved
productivity, reduced defect rate, and reduced quality
dispersion.
