Editor's Notes

  • #3 Complex IT environments are driving an increased need to streamline operations and increase automation capabilities. Rundeck is excited to partner with Sensu and add Automated Runbooks to their “Monitoring as Code” approach. We have jointly developed a number of Rundeck Plugins and a Sensu Handler to streamline integrating these two solutions. Since invitations came from both companies let’s give a quick overview of what we do.
  • #4 Todd… If you’d like to learn more about monitoring as code with Sensu, we’re hosting a webinar next month — head to our website to learn more
  • #5 Rundeck is Runbook Automation that gives anyone in your organization self-service access to operations tasks that previously only your subject matter experts could perform. The word “automation” sometimes instills a bit a of anxiety when balancing that against the complicate infrastructures we mentioned at the start...
  • #6 ... Our advice to customers climbing the figurative mountain of Automation to employ a “Crawl Walk Run” approach. Customers should start off with low risk activities like gathering performance metrics and other key performance indicators to enhance current situational awareness. Secondary steps could be low impact, common remediation actions like clearing temp/cache files. These are often labeled as “Try this first every-time” types of activities. After those are automated teams will be able to learn which “Change Actions” (red section) have the most success and include some of those as Operator Initiated or Automated actions as well. As with any risk based activity each business unit will have to determine risk versus reward when it comes to automating a fix. Today we have a demo that shows a simple example of a scenario in the area 2nd from the top… Let’s walk through the demo environment we have and show everyone a bit more.
