BDA402 Deep Dive: Log Analytics with Amazon Elasticsearch ServiceAmazon Web Services
Everything generates logs. Applications, infrastructure, security ... everything. Keeping track of the flood of log data is a big challenge, yet critical to your ability to understand your systems and troubleshoot (or prevent) issues. In this session, we will use both Amazon CloudWatch and application logs to show you how to build an end-to-end log analytics solution. First, we cover how to configure an Amazon Elaticsearch Service domain and ingest data into it using Amazon Kinesis Firehose, demonstrating how easy it is to transform data with Firehose. We look at best practices for choosing instance types, storage options, shard counts, and index rotations based on the throughput of incoming data and configure a secure analytics environment. We demonstrate how to set up a Kibana dashboard and build custom dashboard widgets. Finally, we dive deep into the Elasticsearch query DSL and review approaches for generating custom, ad-hoc reports.

AWS re:Invent 2016: Driving Innovation with Big Data and IoT (GPSST304)Amazon Web Services
With unforeseen competitive threats and potential market disruptions, enterprises are seeking to innovate for the benefit of their customers. Business transformation in the digital age requires the successful use of new technologies including the cloud, IoT, and Big Data. Attend this session to learn more about how AWS can help organizations innovate faster around IoT and Big Data. We dive into specific opportunities and approaches for managing billions of connected devices and associated big data workloads on the cloud.
AWS’ serverless architecture components such as S3, SQS, SNS, CloudWatch Logs, DynamoDB, Kinesis and Lambda can be tightly constrained in their operation, however it is still possible to use some of them to propagate payloads which may be used to exploit vulnerabilities in some consuming endpoints or user- generated code. This session explores techniques for enhancing the security of these services, from assessing and tightening permissions in IAM to integrating tools and mechanisms for inline and out-of-band payload analysis which are more typically applied to traditional server-based architectures.

We will walk through sample use cases and demonstrate how to set up some of these real-time data processing solutions. We'll also discuss best practices and do a deep dive into AWS Lambda real-time stream processing.
You also hear from speakers from Thomson Reuters, who discuss how the company leverages AWS for its Product Insight service. The service provides insights to collect usage analytics for Thomson Reuters products. The speakers walk through its architecture and demonstrate how they leverage Amazon Kinesis Streams, Amazon Kinesis Firehose, AWS Lambda, Amazon S3, Amazon Route 53, and AWS KMS for near real-time access to data being collected around the globe. They also outline how applying AWS methodologies benefited its business, such as time-to-market and cross-region ingestion, auto-scaling capabilities, low-latency, security features, and extensibility.
You can now develop your AWS Lambda functions in C# using the .NET Core 1.0 runtime.
The easiest way to get started is with the AWS Toolkit for Visual Studio, which includes project templates for individual C# Lambda functions, full C# serverless applications, and also tools to publish both projects types to AWS.
To manually create a C# Lambda function, you simply specify the Lambda runtime parameter as “netcore1.0” and upload the ZIP of all NuGet dependencies as well as your own published DLL assemblies through the AWS CLI or AWS Lambda console. Alternatively, you can use AWS CloudFormation through the AWS Serverless Application Specification for deploying your C# Lambda function.

We built event-driven user interfaces for decades. What about bringing the same approach to mobile, web, and IoT backend applications? You have to understand how data flows and what is the propagation of changes, using reactive programming techniques. You can focus on the core functionalities to build and the relationships among the resources you use. Your application behaves similarly to a “spreadsheet”, where depending resources are updated automatically when something “happens”, and is decomposed into scalable microservices without having to manage the infrastructure. The resulting architecture is efficient and cost effective to run on AWS and managing availability, scalability and security becomes part of the implementation itself.
A dive deep into the AWS IoT service that was announced at AWS re:Invent in October. We will cover the components of the AWS IoT platform, demonstrate the AWS IoT Console and command line experience and the client-side SDKs that AWS provides to help developers build rich applications for their devices, whilst removing the heavy lifting associated with creating a scalable, secure and reliable set of cloud services to support these applications.
This session shows how AWS Mobile Hub can help to reduce the complexity of building mobile apps.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
