Primary authority includes constitutional law, legislation, and court decisions which are considered the law. Secondary authority provides non-legal analysis of the law through sources like encyclopedias and treatises. Mandatory authority such as decisions by higher courts must be followed by lower courts. Persuasive authority from any source may be considered but does not require following and includes both primary and secondary sources.
