This document discusses authentic learning and provides an example of an authentic task related to teaching about HIV/AIDS. Authentic learning allows students to connect concepts to the real world in a meaningful way. An authentic task on HIV/AIDS would have students analyze a photo to identify symptoms, work collaboratively to discuss symptoms, and conduct research in their community on rates of HIV positivity to present their findings in a graph. Students would also reflect on working collaboratively and participate in an online HIV/AIDS discussion forum.
