AUSTRALIAN ANIMALS
MAMMALS
 A mammal is an animal that feeds its baby
with milk from the breast.
A cat is a mammal.
MARSUPALS
 A marsupal is an animal that carries its
baby in a pouch.
A kangaroo is a marsupal.
AUSTRALIAN ANIMALS
 More than 47 species.
 The red kangaroo can
hop at a speed of 74
kph.
 It can hop ten metres
in one hop.
 It can be two metres
tall.THE KANGAROO
MORE ABOUT THE KANGAROO
 The female (the mammy) keeps its baby in
a pouch.
 The kangaroo is shy.
 It lives for about six years in the wild,
in captivity it can live for 20 years.
 It eats grass, leaves and roots.
 It needs little water.
SNAKES
 The brown snake can
be up to 2,3 metres
long.
 It is one of Australia's
more deadly
creatures.
 It eats mice, small
birds, rats and even
other snakes.
There are more than 140 kinds
of snakes in Australia
THE DINGO
 The Dingo is
Australia's wild dog.
 The Dingo is a
medium sized dog,
with a bushy tail, and
red to yellow coat.
 The dingo does not
bark, but it howls.
THE KOALA
 The koala does not move
around much.
 It is only active for about
2 hours of the day.
 It eats eucalyptus leaves.
 The koala makes an
extremely loud and
aggressive growling
noise.
THE PLATYPUS
 The platypus lives aside
freshwater rivers or lakes.
 It can swim under water.
 The female lays between
2 - 4 eggs.
 When a young platypus is
born, it feeds milk from its
mother.
THE CROCODILE
 The Saltwater
Crocodile is the
world's largest reptile.
 Most crocodiles are
about 4 metres long,
but it can be as long
as seven metres.
The crocodile is now a protected
species in Australia.
Many years ago Australia used to
export crocodile skin, but that is
not legal now.
THE GREAT WHITE SHARK
 This shark is found on
all coasts of Australia.
 It can be five metres
long and weigh as
much as 1,3 tons.
 It can have as many
as 2,800 teeth in its
mouth.
•This shark attacks its prey
once, and then waits and lets
its prey bleed to death.
THE ECHIDNA- THE ANT EATER
 The echidna eats ants.
 It can be up to 60 cm long.
 The tongue can be 18 cm
long.
 The echidna is covered in
brown spines.
 The mother lays one egg
every year, and she keeps
her young in her pouch.
