2. To find out more about the target audience for this project, I
decided to create a survey to tell us more about them as an
individual in the demographic in order to find out more about
their psychographics and possible topics that they would
possibly enjoy learning about and seeing in my
documentary. The first question I asked was about their age,
knowing already that the target audience for this project
is people of the ages between 15 to 25. My survey informed me
that the most common answer was 18, with 11 votes, 17 was
the second most common answer with 10 votes, 2 people said
that they were over the age of 18 and no one was aged 16 or
below. This shows us that everyone who was interviewed was in
the requested target audience age range of 15 to 25, However,
were more specifically within the age bracket of 17-18+. A
problem with my survey is that I know two of the people that
completed it are over 18 yet I do not know specifically how old.
The second question I asked my target audience was what gender they are, the options being
female, male and other. The most common answer was male, with 13 votes, female was the
second most common with 10 votes, and other received 0 votes, overall showing us that most of
our target audience will most likely be male.
3. To find out more about the target audiences demographic, I asked them
these two questions, first I asked if any of them were students to which
the majority (22 out of the 23 that voted) said yes, and only 1 person
said no.
The next question I asked would also help me decipher the social
grade of our target audience, I asked if any of them were in
employment and have a job (not specifying if it were full time or part
time) and the majority selected yes, 12 out of the 23, and 11 out of the
23 voted no.
From this information I can infer that our target audience are a mixture
of the social grade ranked D and E. Those who are students and/or
aren't in employment are ranked at social grade E. Those with jobs
(and possibly studying as well as) are ranked as social grade D.
4. I wanted to see if the topic of the northeast area (Sunderland
specifically) would appeal to my target audience and what
specifically they would like to know more about. I asked my
participants how much they already know about Sunderland's
history, to get a rough starting point. The most common answer to
this question with 12 votes was ''some but not a lot", "no" had 6
votes and "yes" had 5 votes. I asked this question so that I knew
how much the target audience roughly already knew to give me
an indication of how much detail I should go into when talking
about Sunderland in my documentary.
To find out more about what my target audience would like to
learn more about, I asked what they'd like to know more
information about relating to Sunderland. The most common
answers were shipyards, football and other historic buildings,
5. To give me a further indication on how much my target audience
know about Sunderland, I asked them where they are from. The
majority said Sunderland (18 out of the 23 who participated in
the survey), 3 said Washington, 1 said Durham and 1 said
Newcastle. This showed that the majority may already know the
basic history of Sunderland, because they are from here or live
relatively close, however may not know the history in much
depth.
The final question that I asked was about what my target
audiences favourite places in Sunderland are, as this question
would give me more ideas of topics relating to Sunderland that I
could include in my documentary (topics that they may not have
mentioned in my past question of what relating to Sunderland
that they would like to learn more about. For this question, they
could decide to write as many places as they liked, not just one.
I received a mixture of answers for this question, all of which
were quite different. The most popular answers from this
question were the beach, Stadium of Light, Winter Gardens and
Penshaw Monument. Some of these responses were also
mentioned as answers for my question asking what they'd like
to learn more about.
6. O V E R A L L C O N C L U S I O N
From my research I learnt about my target audience's demographic and
psychographics. Their demographic showed that they were mostly that the target
audience was mainly a mixture of social grades D and E as all but one person
who completed the survey was a student, and the majority were in employment
(and therefore social grade D).
All of those who completed the survey live in or around the Sunderland area and
therefore will at least have basic knowledge about the city and will therefore have
things that they may like about Sunderland.
From their answers to the questions about what they like about Sunderland and
what they would like to learn more about, the most common answers (and
therefore possible topic that I can expand and talk about in my documentary)
were the history of the Shipyards, Stadium of Light, Penshaw Monument, Coal
Mines, Hylton Castle and the Empire Theatre.
