2. Personal Statement
I recently have reached two milestones in my life; one turning forty and the second obtaining my bachelors in
Psychology. It has been a process in my pursuit to obtain my bachelor’s degree as there have been many obstacles and
hurdles through my journey. My 20-year pursuit has proven my determination and fortitude to reach my goal. I believe that
I have not lost anything with age, but have gained much practical knowledge and experience that cannot be taught; but
can be enhanced through higher learning. I am also a single mother of four children who has learned to balance; school,
work and life which proves my commitment and determination to achieve a high quality education.
My curiosity and interest in the criminal justice system stems from a period when my brother was sentenced to the
state correctional system. I was nineteen at the time and walked through the entire process with him. The issue that
impacted me the most was the lack of rehabilitation that was in place for these men the opportunity to successful and
productive citizens upon their release. I have also had a fascination with the human mind and how it affects the way we
think, act and react to our environment; so the emergence of forensics within the field of psychology has allowed me to put
both my passions together to pursue my educational goals and career in the field of forensic psychology.
My principal goal in applying to your graduate program in Forensic Psychology is to prepare myself for a career working
as a psychologist in the criminal justice system. My interest in working with the criminal justice system is to work with sex
offenders through rehabilitation to lower the recidivism rate. I am very committed to pursuing Forensic Psychology and
am confident that graduate program at Argosy will give me the foundation I need to reach my goals. Receiving a Master’s
I will be able to obtain a career in the criminal justice system. I am aware of the difficult challenges of obtaining Master’s
degree and I am sure that I can meet those challenges head on. Upon reviewing my transcripts you will be able to observe
that I am student who is able to handle the challenges of graduate-level courses. I thrive on challenge and learning new
information. I am secure enough in my ability that I will be successful by undertaking the challenges of a demanding
graduate program.
Forensic psychology as I have stated my goal is to work with the sex offender population within the criminal justice
system. I have gained my knowledge of this population through my Professors here at Argosy in the undergraduate
program. These instructors who work with this field already have changed my thought process of these individuals. I used
to believe that they could not be rehabilitated. These professors have given me the knowledge of the thought patterns and
the difficulties that the sex offender population faces and that these individuals can be rehabilitated. They have also
shared the challenges and difficulties of working with this population especially as a woman. I still have many questions
unanswered and my curious nature is not satisfied. I believe having the ability to further my education at Argosy, I will be
able to pursue my goals to have a career in Forensic Psychology and make a contribution to the field itself.

4. Reflection
Reflecting on my tenure here at Argosy University/Phoenix I have very fond memories and not only have I gained a wealth of knowledge I have
also made many friends and new connections along the way.
I have grown a great deal in my critical thinking skills. I have been able to build this skill through coursework and instructors who have
challenged me by developing research questions and the ability to know how to choose the correct literature to correctly analyze that question.
Although I feel I have grown a great deal in this area I still need more experience in order to garner the information to integrate and arrange the
information.
When it comes to understanding research methods I still have a need to grow in this area. Although I feel I have had a moderate exposure to it
is an area I am still lacking. I do feel with some mentoring within my chosen field the basic knowledge I have gained will allow me to excel in
research methods.
Communication skills both oral and written is where I feel I have grown leaps and bounds here at Argosy. The teachers have been a integral
part in my growth in this area, as they have taken the time to constructively help me improve in these two areas. The assignments and projects
we were given have been beneficial in strengthening skills in these two areas. I have learned a lot but still need to keep growing in this area in
order to perfect both my ability to communicate and write more effectively
Each course taken here at Argosy gave exposure to both diversity and exposure. I have learned a great when it comes to dealing and applying
multiculturally-sensitive theories and beliefs to specific psychological issues. There was extensive exposure to ethical principles and practices.
I cannot say enough about he knowledge of psychology I have gained here at Argosy. I have had a well-rounded exposure to major
concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, applications and historical trends. Along with that knowledge I have learned to analyze
and apply all of those areas. Even with the knowledge of psychology I have gathered I still have a lot more knowledge to acquire as I grow
within my career.
The areas of applied psychology has allowed me to have a consistent understanding of how psychological principles apply to issues and
situation at a personal, social and/or organization level. I have now begun to apply those principles in my everyday life in order to make
decision, my interactions with others, etc.
Interpersonal effectiveness in regards to active listening and communication skills taught at Argosy has had a major impact on my growth in this
area. I have used this skill in my everyday life and in the classroom in order to better understand others. I feel this is an area where once can
always grow and I am no exception.

7. My Future in Learning
Learning is a lifelong process and I do envision myself as a life long
learner. I do believe there are always new information to learn and to prevent
myself from becoming stagnate I intend to always seek new knowledge. Even
though I have finished up my tenure here at Argosy and I enter my chosen field I
know that things evolve and in order to stay on top of my game and to become
the best I will have to continue to stay up on new ideas and research. Learning
is also encompassing those new ideas and learning to change with them.
I am a lifelong learner and a seeker of new knowledge I do not expect
that to ever change.
