A Beginner's Guide to Writing a UCAS ReferenceBridgeU
In this presentation, originally shared with our customer earlier this year, we took teachers and guidance counselors through the basics of writing a UCAS reference.
We discussed the difference between a teacher's subject report and the final UCAS reference, and we explained the difference between a good UCAS reference and a bad one.

At this time, the aspect in the doctoral process that holds the most confidence is the coursework. I have generally been rather successful in completing tasks, and earning decent grades. The history of coursework, grades, and determination to complete things that have been started provides the confidence to support the previous statement.
The aspect of the doctoral process that is most concerning is the Comprehensive Exam. While I work “well under pressure”, I am concerned about the amount of work required for the rather short time frame provided to compete the Comprehensive Exam (28 days, 3 questions, each answer being 12-17 pages in length). These requirements, at this point in the doctoral journey, are intimidating.
At this point in my life, career, and education, I have learned the value of asking for, and accepting help. I believe that self-sufficiency is extremely important, but not to the extent that my health and sanity should be at risk. While I feel more confident in many aspects of my life when I am doing well in other aspects, I am not beyond taking care of myself. As I tell my clients often, you must take care of yourself, to be able to take care of others. If I do not perform self-care, how can I care for my clients? Ruscio (2006), in
Critical Thinking in Psychology,
referenced the “well-established correlation between self-esteem and academic achievement” (p. 99). While there is controversy in this correlation, I personally feel that academic achievement increases self-esteem, rather than the other way around. However, they both affect each other differently, for different individuals. As most things in life, it is dependent upon the individual, rather than 100% one way or the other.
The sources of help in the process of doctoral learning that appears to be most helpful would be the dissertation mentor and academic advisor. These individuals would be helpful in providing feedback, support, answering questions, and helping to take the mystery out of the process. The presentation “Welcome to Dissertation” provided insight on the process, and solidified the thought that they will be useful in the dissertation process.

I am still not sure if I have confidence in any aspect of this process at this point. I do feel like I am slowly getting a better understanding of the dissertation process and no longer think this is something that happens to end your Ph.D. but rather starts from day one. I am starting to gain confidence in my topic of interest and my ability to create new and important research in the field. I largely think that my confidence in this area is coming primarily from peer feedback in the discussion posts. This group of people has proven to be supportive and .

2. Professional Portfolio Final, 1
I can confidently say that my experience at Argosy has been a fun, challenging,
enlightening, and strengthening practice to my academic success. I have attained a
broader scope of knowledge in the psychology field, set and met goals, defied struggles,
and encountered professional relationships that will allow me to further my education. I
am proud of what I have accomplished thus far, and am very excited to cultivate the next
steps of a professional career in psychology.
Some of strengths that have allowed me to reach where I am today are my social
skills. I have always had a passion for people, and the use of that enthusiasm has allowed
me to create and infuse relationships that I have built during my experience at Argosy. I
am very grateful for the people I have met and gotten to know. I have been lucky enough
to work with professors, educators, Argosy staff, and especially my classmates, in
meeting certain goals and providing support and encouragement for one another.
Working and going to school at the same time can be very stressful, and having that
support system in our school environment made a lot of the challenges bearable.
Another strength that I have been able to implement in my academic work at
Argosy is fortitude. We studied many different cases, reviewed events that are relevant
to psychology, encountered vast amounts of theories, and examined the works of people
who have significantly contributed to this field. I have been so eager to attain a degree in
psychology that it can be easy to forget all the things we experience and come across that
provide us with an even more fulfilling voyage.
Along with these strengths, my weaknesses were evident as well. Like I
mentioned earlier, working and going to school at the same time is no easy fete. Being

able to balance both, along with family and a social life, is very critical. Unfortunately I
have been battling with a health concern for almost two years, and that created most
challenges to be even more intolerable. I failed a lot at finding that balance. Throughout
the academic school year, I found that I had to prioritize many elements in my life in
order to meet certain needs. I have no regrets of the choices I have made, but I do reflect
on the reasons why I had to make them. Sometimes this resulted in missing a deadline,
skipping a chapter, failing at discussing certain terms and theories with my peers, and
lack of validity in my work.
Another weakness in my educational performance is organization. Each course at
Argosy is about 7 weeks long. There is so much information to review in such a small
amount of time. Organization under these circumstances proves to be very important. I
believe that organization would allow me to retain the large amount of information in a
more concise and effective manner. I was worried about falling too far behind if I
stopped to organize notes, articles, outlines, theories, progressions, and case studies. I
figured the information is accessible to me, and if I needed it I can just go back to it.
Now, I know that being more proficient can allow my learning to be more effective and
resourceful.
I already consider myself a lifelong learner. Argosy has taught me that you don’t
necessarily have to be a student to learn. We can learn just as well from our peers,
experiences, challenges, disappointments, failures, determination, and commitment to
knowledge. I may not be the most studious person, but I do thrive in what I seek to

understand. I am most proud of the realization towards my education that you do not
have to be in a classroom to be a life long learner. Being able to apply certain
fundamentals and theories to the field of psychology will allow me to expand and
heighten my knowledge in itself.
