Atlassian Connect was introduced to address limitations of the previous Atlassian Plugin SDK. It uses a microservices architecture with loosely coupled and language agnostic services that communicate over public REST APIs and webhooks. Atlassian Connect now supports over 10,000 add-on installations in the cloud and will expand to on-premise servers in the future.
