This document provides an overview of the National Airspace System (NAS) in the United States, including its goals and major components. The three main goals of NAS are safety, efficient movement of aircraft, and cost efficiency. The major parts of NAS are airports, air traffic services, and airspace users. Airports are categorized based on the type of aviation activity, including international, domestic air carrier, commuter, reliever, and general aviation airports. A small number of large hub airports handle the majority of passenger traffic.
