Form follows Flow
Dao of Design in Nature & Culture
I'm sharing how elegance in nature transforms into beauty & sustainability in culture, how beauty flows in time.

Designing Creative Teams: Play makes Hay!
Play releases most Potential, Most Easily, Adding Most Value.
What works for Teams also works for Nature. Why?
Good Form follows True, Beautiful Flow.
It’s built into the way the world works, from geometry to nature, people and society. It’s called Universality and it works for everything…including Football (so it must be true)!
Like a Penrose tiling, finite shapes can create infinitely varied patterns.
This is how universality explores possibilities most easily.
Does that sound familiar? It should — because it’s Play.
Play in terms of recreation, making plans, models and theatre to explore new concepts, ideas and hypotheticals.
What the new sciences of complexity tell us is that Nature can self-organise to evolve, and it does it with lateral, playful dynamics that explore as much information in a possibility-space as possible, most simply & quickly.
Teams are a collective consciousness. So they both work best when they’re connected in as many and varied ways as possible.
When they’re both bottom-up as well as top-down.
Vertical and lateral, focussed and playful in turn, especially when problems need solving and new thinking is needed.
Look at the circles in this background image and how they change relative positions and sizes. That’s just what creativity is — playing with permutations and potentials to find the most ideal and fit for purpose arrangements.
Creativity is both divergent as well as convergent — and it yields moments that flip modes — or even keep both (or several), in superposition, most easily.
In terms of Nash Equilibrium, the most potential is released for the least energy cost during self-organised critical, phase-transition regimes (known as dynamical systems universality); when co-operation replaces conflict.
The geometry of the natural world into which we’re all embedded is fractal and recursively self-similar, it’s feedback-led, bottom up and top down in symphonic harmony, adaptive & resilient, rhyming and resonant, delivering gestalt (wholes that are more than the some of their parts — synergies). That’s what empathy is: emotional fractals and self-similarity between individuals and within teams.
So the best teams are the ones that are best curated and synergised by empathic mentors that tolerate and encourage equality & pluralism.
It’s what the French called an Espirit de Corps and is why a happy, healthy and creative team is also a pluralistic democracy that thrives on diversity, simplexity, shared information and humour, on leadership from the front delivering fulfilled potential for both individuals and the unit — on an emergent unity of shared purpose and meaning, rather than as an imposed, authoritarian “dick-tatorship”.
The geometries that best express these (ultimately, information), flows and behaviours are those of the Asynsis principle — and since they

Nature perfected the art of developing products through 4+ billion years of evolution. Nature is a constant and inspiring learning source. Nature uses simplest material for making remarkable multifunctional products. For example, butterfly wings, which are optimized for flapping with iridescent colors and as sensors. Life is complex and diverse physical system, however evolved as an optimal system with efficient terminal units or building blocks. Nature Inspired Engineering or Biomimetics has matured from empirical scaling laws to computational modelling of active matter.
Nature evolved over billions of years and solved similar engineering and medical problems of our interest in an efficient and sustainable way. In addition to developing design methods, materials and surfaces, we can leverage these concepts to develop a whole new nature inspired devices and system, such as, Dolphin inspired, frequency modulated underwater acoustics devices, Kingfisher inspired aero/hydrodynamics structures, Mosquito micro drill inspired medical and material drilling devices, and anthill inspired building thermal managements system.
Nature inspired Technologies and product solutions such as Evolutionary Structural Optimization, Nature inspired Materials, Structured Surfaces and Interfaces, Hierarchical branching systems will be detailed. Nature inspired equation based mathematical surfaces are under renewed interest due to their innovative design potential and practical viability through 3D printing. As the 3D printing industry is growing from small scale to mainstream product manufacturing. Nature inspired and equation based surface models and its transformation for 3D printable innovative engineering applications will be detailed.
Biomimicry, the nature inspired innovation for solving industrial engineering and healthcare problems will be a key focus. Concepts and Tools such as Material unity, Multiphysics computational modelling, multiscale modelling, Multimaterial will be detailed to show cases the Nature inspired engineering principles for solving real world interconnected Engineering and healthcare problems.

What do I really want to explore?:
How does F&A relate other than those surface similarities?
How can we bring both disciplines closer?
Can fashion designers and architects work together?
Can both eventually use the same materials?
Why should they even use the same materials? Sustainability?
What about the same construction methods?
Fashion IN modern architecture
What about the design elements of fashion and architecture?
How architecture and fashion design relation evolved and developed over the years?
How has fashion influenced architecture??
Proposed title(s):
Convergence of fashion design and architecture
Parametricism in architecture and fashion
The potential of fashion and architecture to enhance the human condition
What does the relation between fashion and architecture mean?
· Design elements used in each discipline are similar
· Construction materials, methods, techniques are similar - high tech textiles, pliable building materials, Computer Assisted Design software
· Fashion adopt architectural materials
· Architecture adopt fashion materials
· Fashion runways designed by architects/have architectural qualities
· Buildings designed with fashion elements like ornamentation
Proposed chapters/arguments
· Introduction:
1. Define Architecture and Fashion (A&F)
2. History of both A&F
3. Correlation between A&F – When did the relationship start? (convergence over the years) Example: Modernism – rejected the idea of ornamentation. Post-modernism/Parametricism – more similarities Focus on one period/style in the dissertation
· Mention/explore F&A interactions eg. African influence on modernity??
· Similar design elements and processes used in both disciplines – folding, patterning, parametric design etc.
· Include theory:
1. Gottfried Semper: The Vitruvian Virtues of Architecture: Utilitas, Firmitas, Venustas (http://art3idea.psu.edu/locus/vitruvius2.pdf)
2. Gottfried Semper: Theory of Dressing (Refer to ACSA pdf)
· Parametricism – how it came about.
· Counterargument: why parametricism is still not embraced by many
Questionable:
· Is Fashion temporary/momentary process??
· Architecture is known to be an “interpretation of space”, but so is Fashion – space in which your body occupies? Both can be experiential as well.
· “This identity is not necessarily to be the real identity of the person; it is rather about what we want the society to think about us, but not really what we are in real life. Taking architecture as a language defined by Jencks, contemporarily, architecture could be both defined as the visualization of our REAL identities, and identity does not change as often as fashion trends do” – True to an extent but fashion is used more frequently in a way, on an individual? When you occupy different buildings, your identity changes as well? But one can choose fashion more so on a daily basis then they can choose architecture. Therefo ...

Of Architecture
It's great to be at SCI-Arc. I had two great days to see what's
going on here, and I think what I have to say speaks, to a
certain extent, critically to what is going on here. The lecture
is a variation on a lecture I have been giving this year. I've
added an element that relates to my forthcoming book, The
Autopoiesis ofArchitecture, which is an attempt to create a
comprehensive and unified theory of architecture, and which
features parametricism as the last chapter of volume two. The
argument is that parametric ism continues the autopoiesis of
architecture, which is the self-referential, closed system of
communications that constitutes architecture as a discourse
in contemporary society. The book is in two volumes. Volume
one, a new framework for architecture, is coming out in
December [released December 7,2010] and then a new agenda
for architecture appears in volume two, probably four to six
months later. It is difficult to summarize, but just to raise a
bit of curiosity about this, I will make an argument for
a comprehensive unified theory is of interest.
A comprehensive unified theory of and for architecture
is important if you are trying to lead 400 architects across a
multiplicity of projects, touching all aspects and components
of contemporary architecture in terms of programmatic
agendas and at all scales. With a unified theory one is better
prepared to manage the different designs, designers, and
approaches that run in different directions, fight each other,
contradict each other, and stand in each other's way. I am also
teaching at a number of schools, the Architectural Association
Design Research Laboratory [AA DRL] being one of them, an
expanding group that is now 150 to 160 students. Here again
there is an issue in trying to converge efforts so that people
don't trip over each other and get in each other's way. The
need for a unified theory is first of all to eliminate contradic
tions within one's own efforts - so one doesn't stand in one's
own way all the time. If you go around from jury to jury,
from project to project, you one thing here, another thing
there, and further ideas come to mind; by the third occasion

you might be saying and doing things that don't gel, don't

societal function. You might be concerned with what is
architecture, what is not architecture, to demarcate against

Constructal law is a new optimal, sustainable design law of nature & culture that shows our
stakeholders exactly how to best emulate, then preserve nature while creating a more harmonious
relationship with the planetary biosphere by mapping Constructal law rules and axioms onto our
society. Those rules apply particularly to the design and construction industries.
Those rules show that nature innately evolves to facilitate all flows and the freedoms of those flows
to morph and autonomously create new designs, often enhancing their beauty & complexity.
This law explains why the geometry of nature is fractal. It also explains why both nature and
culture, animate and inanimate, follow these same evolutionary, complexity-enhancing flows.
Asynsis is the transformative, paradigm-shifting bridge of optimal, analogical Cosmomimetic
design that unifies the arts and the sciences by best visualising the geometric signatures, the
spatio-temporal architectures of the Constructal law, as established when Professor Adrian Bejan,
Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Pratt Engineering School, Duke

University (in an unprecedented meeting between design leaders from both the sciences and arts),
invited Nigel Reading RIBA, Design Director of Asynsis Architecture + Design to present the
Asynsis principle at the Constructal Law conference, Nanjing University of Science and
Technology, in Nanjing, China on October 14-15, 2013.

Design in nature is ultimately, a physics phenomenon that optimally facilitates anything that flows,
be they currents of energy, matter, resources or information. So those flows, given freedom morph and evolve systems towards greater power capacity, robustness and complexity by
developing multi-scale modularity. The optimal geometries of those flows in space and in time,
are self-similar at varying scales, and they are geometrically fractal because of Constructal
thermodynamic behaviours, following the analogically optimal, Asynsis principle.
Crucially, these local currents always flow by consuming the least mass-energy whilst also
producing the most global entropy for export. They are also computationally the most efficient
feedback-led, self-similar geometries for processing and storing information and are therefore the
most optimal and sustainable of processes in nature for allowing systems to evolve, learn and
persist over time – despite their emergence within environments that are in constant flux.
So they are also optimally sustainable because they are the most stable, the most resistant to
perturbations and the most robust whilst critically, consuming the least energy & resources, over

time, despite that flux. In geometric terms, Period 2 bifurcations are the lowest-energy dynamical
behaviours that are possible, they are the epitome of the Asynsis geometries that Nigel discovered
in his published peer-reviewed research at the University of Westminster and the British Library in
London.

These geometries also most homogeneously, robustly and adaptively distribute imperfections
within dynamical systems and allow for the most irreducibly complex repertoire of states. In
information processing terms, these innate geometries allow nature to self-organise,
to design itself and optimally approach states that can perform universal computation for the
least cost, in effect - allowing "order for free" in the right conditions of far from equilibrium
dissipative processes, open systems which have the inputs of energy and outputs of exported
entropy.

The exemplary examples? Life & Human consciousness itself, and collectively – Human society.
These analogical, optimal geometric processes allow systems to lower their local entropies for
finite, extended transient periods (by exporting it), just like certain classes of cellular automata, or
artificial life simulations seen in computer models.
These processes are also entirely innate within nature, no external agency is required.

“Broad boulevards of possibilities”, continual, finite multiscalar recursion yielding infinite creativity,
inevitably results in the right circumstances - and those optimal geometries are Asynsis ones.
What we believe we have co-discovered then, is an innate, dynamical systems geometric constant
that automatically codes for increasing local complexity and order in certain far-from equilibrium
conditions as a natural collateral computational consequence of irreversibility within all known
domains of the cosmos (despite the overall, global entropy-increase as dictated by the 2nd law of
thermodynamics), hence the term: “Cosmomimetic” design, of which “Biomimetics” is a sub-set.
Asynsis geometries are therefore the analogical signatures of these thermodynamics-led,
computationally optimal Constructal behaviours. They exist in both inanimate and animate nature
whenever anything is flowing.

So to conclude, to be sustainable and optimal is the only viable path for our civilisation, to do
otherwise is sheer folly, because we would be hubristicly violating a fundamental physics law of
nature and culture, a current rectifiable detour that is already inviting nature's nemesis upon us.

Since Asynsis geometries are also those of beauty and harmony in the arts, architecture and
design, (they are remarkably, also the geometries of Leonardo da Vinci’s Divine Proportion, or
Golden Ratio - but in time), we have a compelling new societal philosophy at hand, one that
marries the arts and the sciences in one unified paradigm, one that confirms that when our
civilisation is being environmentally sustainable, it is also being geometrically-aesthetically beautiful
and elegant as we design ourselves a more viable, biospherically-compatible future for ourselves,
our children, our society and our sole, beautiful planet, upon which all these living flows above
completely depend.

In transcultural “West meets East” philosophical terms, Constructal-Asynsis optimal analogical
flow-facilitation is also analogous to enhancing the Qi-氣 (energy) flows and Li-理 (geometric)
principles of Chinese philosophy. This synthesis has the potential to be a compelling transcultural
paradigm shift. It can be a crucial tipping-point that assists China’s sustainable development drive.

Why? Not only will stakeholders be invoking aesthetic beauty when they are engaging in
sustainable practices, they will be conforming to an innate “supreme ultimate” principle or universal
law of nature (via Asynsis-Feng Shui practice, analogous to the Tai Ji -太極 philosophy of the
Mencian philosopher Zhu Xi), so their life flows (individual and stakeholder), will also be more
harmonious, healthy, lucky and wealthy!
Constructal law sciences and Asynsis principle arts, thermodynamics and geometry point the way
to a new universal, transcultural civilisational paradigm for attaining sustainability and transcending
crisis, be it economic, political or climatic.
Beauty, Optimisation and Sustainability are certainly anything but contradictory, on the contrary –
they are actually profoundly synonymous.
To reinterate, in Chinese culture, through the lens of Feng Shui, to apply Asynsis-Constructal rules
will also confer robust health, flowing wealth and great good fortune on the users.

In poetic terms, Asynsis principle geometric beauty is now revealed to be the Ying to
Constructal law’s Yang of scientific truth. Their Qi-Li (Tai Ji) synthesis reveals a Tao “hearts and
minds” way to harmony with nature for the nascent global fusion civilisation.
The synergy of the two confers unprecedented uniquely symphonic world-beating power to our
practice’s work as visionary designers, because our work is Form follows Flow, More for Less
and “Design as (Art bridging to) Science” and “Design as Applied Philosophy”.
No other practice has this position in the global market, which allows us to provide transcultural,
world-beating and exceptional added-value to our clients’ projects through our unique insights
into fusion East-West culture & our global market leadership in optimisation, sustainability and
beauty in design, construction & operations for the built environment.
