Studying the atmospheres of a statistically significant number of rocky, terrestrial exoplanets - including the search for habitable and potentially inhabited planets - is one of the major goals of exoplanetary science and possibly the most challenging question in 21st century astrophysics. However, despite being at the top of the agenda of all major space agencies and ground-based observatories, none of the currently planned projects or missions worldwide has the technical capabilities to achieve this goal. In this talk we present new results from the LIFE Mission initiative, which addresses this issue by investigating the scientific potential of a mid infrared nulling interferometer observatory. Here we will focus on the mission's yield estimates, our simulator software as well as various exemplary science cases such as observing Earth- and Venus-twins or searching for phosphine in exoplanetary atmospheres.

The advancement of technology in the last decade or so has allowed astronomy to see exponential growth in data volumes. ESA's space telescope Euclid will gather high-resolution images of a third of the sky, ~850GB of data downloaded daily for 6 years, by 2032 ground-based telescope LSST will have generated 500PB of data and the radio telescope SKA will be producing more data per second than the entire internet worldwide. This talk will address the questions of what current techniques exist to address big data volumes, how the astronomical community will prepare for this big data wave, and what other challenges lie ahead?

This PowerPoint is drawn from a paper that discusses online, blended, and face-to-face learning at the graduate level. Distance education is becoming used more often by institutions of higher education throughout the United States. Two graduate courses are compared in the present study. One course was offered as a blended course over a three-week summer period and the other course was offered online over a 14-week semester long period. These two courses were taught by the same instructor and had the same student course assistants. The research is based on the information gathered by the course assistants comparing survey results of students enrolled in the courses. The course assistants found that most of feedback provided by the students concerning distance education was positive. The included charts depict information gleaned from surveys taken by students in the courses. The authors also have included student quotes based on these courses. This paper expands on ways research may be done to develop how distance education courses are taught.

La nave Rosetta de la Agencia Espacial Europea se convirtió en uno de los hitos de la investigación espacial de los últimos años. Fue lanzada el 2 de marzo de 2004 y, tras un viaje de 10 años en los que recorrió 6.400 millones de kilómetros a través del Sistema Solar, llegó a su destino, el cometa 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, el 6 de agosto de 2014. Se convertía así en la primera nave en acoplarse a un cometa y ponerse en su órbita. El 5 de mayo de 2015, la Fundación Ramón Areces dedicó un ciclo de conferencias a analizar esta gesta, en la que participaron los coordinadores científicos de la misión.

The 4th Regional Galaxy Forum Southeast Asia is taking place at the Science Centre for Education at the Bangkok Planetarium in collaboration between ILOA, National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) and Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA). Thailand is a leader in the region for Astronomy and Satellite Technology. NARIT is a national research organization for astronomy in Thailand enabling the development of a collaborative research network both regionally and globally, and aiming at developing and strengthening knowledge in astronomy at an international level. They also ally with public and private observatories and other institutions around the World to pursue excellence in scientific research, education and public outreach.

In recent years, the integration of fibre optic telecommunication cable monitoring technologies has not been fully achieved, hindering novel applications and research in Earth science. However, recent collaborations among national seismic and oceanographic infrastructures, National Research and Education Networks (NRENs), universities, research institutes, and industry in Europe have developed techniques to monitor the Earth and its systems using submarine optical telecommunication fibres. The SUBMERSE project aims to create a pilot research instrument that can continuously monitor existing submarine fibre optic cables, promoting sustainable development goals and leading to new scientific collaborations. This requires the collaboration of multiple stakeholders both nationally and internationally.

The Square Kilometre Array telescopes have recently started their construction phase, after years of pre-construction effort. The new SKA Observatory (SKAO) intergovernmental organisation has been created, and the start of construction (T0) has already happened. In this talk we summarise the construction progress in our facility, and the role that software development, and in particular the development of our TANGO-based control system, is playing.

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”. All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024 https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/ As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management. The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes.
