This document describes the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS), which classifies soils into groups based on laboratory tests of particle size, liquid limit, and plasticity index. The USCS divides soils into three main groups - coarse-grained soils, fine-grained soils, and highly organic soils. These are further divided into 15 basic soil groups identified by symbols like SW, CL, CH, etc. Laboratory test results are used along with visual observations to assign a soil its group symbol and name. The classification system aims to categorize soils in a way that correlates to their significant engineering properties.
