TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE

Images:
Denotation: Wire, Meat signs and chainsaws
Conatation: Inversed images make it abnormal, he doesn’t
like death and could potentially kill someone.

Mis-en-scene: Facial expressions are heavily used. The location seems unclean,
and the fright of the character makes it seem that whatever is being done to
him is involuntary. The killer is made to seem mysterious.
TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE

How does this all create enigma?

Fade In’s create suspense, as do the flashing images.
The killers face is never fully shown so it adds tension.
THE RING
THE RING

                         Genre: Horror/ Thriller

Font/ Titles: The writing is quite childlike and circular letters are overly
circulated to look like a ring.

Camera Shots: Extreme close ups, close ups and long shots

Camera Angles: Low angles focusing on her feet

Camera Movement: A variety of Zoom and Steadicam
THE RING

Sound:
         Non Diagetic: Eerie background music
Diagetic: The scream that the character lets out, the sound
of the water dripping and the TV flickering.

Special Effects: Emphasis on circles, the supernatural chair,

Transitions: Fade ins, Fade outs and flickering text.

Editing/Pace: It starts off quite slowly paced and it picks up to a medium
pace an stays consistent.
THE RING

Images:
Denotation: The upside down chair, the blood dripping, the
glasses of water and general focus on water.
Connotation: The upside down chair could signify something
supernatural. The blood dripping could show that
will die in this movie, in perhaps intricate fashion. The
focus on water could show that something quite pure
could be at the heart of it.
THE RING

Mis-en-scene: Innocence is played out through the character and her costume.
She is dressed kind of like a school girl emphasizing her age. The setting is
made to look quite normal until you see the water dripping from the
doorknob.

How does all of this create Enigma?

The blood swirling in the water is quite seductive looking which makes the
viewer want to find out more. Also, a wishing well that is briefly shown which
makes the viewer immediately think of how that could link to what they’re
about to watch.

                       Genre: Crime/Drama/Mystery

Font/Titles: Warped writing with some parts hand written. Its quite faded.
It has awkward spacing and is quite wonky. There is also a range of sizes and
its never quite clear and is quite jumpy. It looks manipulated.

Camera Shots: Extreme Close ups are constantly used, not much is ever given
away.

Camera Angles: High Angles when looking at pictures and writing.
SE7EN

Sound:
Non-Diagetic: The high pitched noise and radio tuning. It also has
a sexual song called ‘Closer’ by Nine Inch Nails which
is ironic considering the plot of the film.
Diagetic: The sound made when smoothing out Sellotape.

Special Effects: Unfocused images, echoing/Ghost trail, Black and White
Sepia and blurred images.

Transitions: Fade outs, fast fading, page turning in sync with the transitions.
This has purposely been used to create disorientation amongst the audience.
SE7EN

Editing/Pace: Its quite slow paced but picks up towards the end as the music
builds. Continuity editing is used.

Images:
Denotation: Blood dripping, editing out sexual words and the
                             pictures of the boy.
Connotation: The blood signifies that people could be killed,
the editing of the sexual words could suggest that
the character is quite conserved and sees it as
inappropriate and the crossing out of the boy’s
face could suggest he dislikes the person in the
                                   picture.
SE7EN

Mis-en-scene: Everything is unclear but looks vaguely sinister. The dirty
fingernails suggests that the character shown is a hard worker or a manual
labourer. The images of screws through heads are deliberately frightening and
are put there to shock the audience.

                            How does this create Enigma?
The character’s face is never shown, this makes him quite mysterious, if not
sinister. His face is his identity and once that is gone, his identity is removed
and the audience has nothing to go by.
GATTACA
GATTACA

                              Genre: Drama

Font/Titles: Small spread out text, it is subtle and not overbearing. Names
that have the letters G, A, T, I or C in them are highlighted. It has
connotations of a science theme which links to the highlighted letters.

Camera Shots: Extreme Close ups (which create enigma) Intimate detail is
given when he injects blood into his thumbprint.
Medium Shots are used as he sits at the desk.
POV shots are used as he looks down at his work.
GATTACA

Camera Angles: A slight high angle as the car is being filmed.

Camera movement: Slow tilt as the character is in the shower and as the car is
being filmed. The camera pans when it moves slowly over the dead skin flakes.

Sound:
Non- Diagetic: High pitched stringy background music
Diagetic: The sound of the car going past.

Special effects: Slow motion is used as the fingernails, hairs and dead skin
drop to the ground.
GATTACA

Transitions: It has overlapping transitions to make it quite soft.

Editing/Pace: The pace is very slow which keeps the audience calm. The
movements of the character are also limited. The lack of camera movement
adds to the slow pace.

Images:
Denotation: The usage of other bodily fluids and the false
                                 thumbprint
Connotation: This character doesn’t wish to be identified and so
                       covers it with someone else's.
GATTACA

Mis-en-scene: The character is quite mysterious and doesn’t give a negative or
a threatening vibe. He is also well kept and very hygienic which lets the
audience glimpse at what the character is like throughout the film.

                        How does this create Enigma?

A clear view is never fully given of the character which makes you wonder
who he is. Also, you wonder what he is doing trying to hide his identity and
for what reason he is hiding it.
