This document provides instructions for Assignment 2 which asks students to discuss how their understanding of America's origins has changed after reading historical documents. Students are asked to discuss new insights into early immigrant experiences and the effect of this new knowledge on concepts like property ownership, citizenship, freedom, and the American Dream. Students must post their response by January 9th and review and comment on two peers' responses by January 13th, supporting their conclusions with evidence from readings.

Assignment 1: Forces of Oppression
Discussion Question
After reading the materials for this module, reflect on the forces that were used to prevent women from achieving full citizenship in America for most of its history.
Think, for instance, about the kinds of things that the young women in our readings said and thought about the life around them. How did they describe or think about their place in society? How—if at all—were they able to struggle against the social and cultural forces that constrained them?
For this discussion, name one cultural, social, or economic force you think might have played a role in preventing women from achieving equal citizenship. Why do you think this prevented equal citizenship? How did it affect or operate on women? How do you think this force made it difficult for women to work toward their equal citizenship?

Assignment 1: Identity-through-Exclusion
Discussion Question
After reading the materials for this module, reflect on the different ways that various groups in American history have tried to define the national identity in terms of exclusion—whether it be whites excluding non-whites, males excluding females, natives excluding immigrants, and so on.
For this discussion thread, think about ways that such a process of identity-through-exclusion persists today.
For instance, one of the most obvious examples of “identity-through-exclusion” is our national identity. We know we are Americans because we are
not
Canadians, or Germans, or Japanese, and so on. Within American culture, we often define our identity in similar ways. Some stores exclude non-members from shopping there, some clubs or organizations require certain traits (for example, being a certain age, a certain religion, a certain ethnicity), and some rights exclude groups (voting rights, citizenships rights, and so on). Such exclusions are sometimes rooted in monetary gain (like requiring shoppers to buy memberships), sometimes in efficiency (like preventing children from voting), and sometimes in other goals.
Can you think of any instances where Americans find or define their identity by excluding other groups? What groups are excluded, and what groups are doing the excluding? What does the excluding group hope to gain by preventing the other group from being counted as a member?

During this second week, you explored the knowledge base and history of social work. We have examined specific social work professions as well as the great strides social workers have made in the U.S. with helping individuals, thus making a difference nationally.
For your assignment this week, identify three influential figures in social work – one person of color, one female, and one of your choice. Briefly, describe their accomplishments and their contributions to the social work knowledge base.
Next, select one of the three and discuss how this individual might approach the social issue/problem you identified in Week 1. If possible or appropriate, include an example that illustrates how this individual might address the problem.
Support your assignment with at least three scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including seminal articles, may be included.

Harris and Carbado, “Loot or Find:

CONTEXT
:
Making arguments in our lives usually means persuading an audience; often it means, if it is a real argument, addressing a group that is not completely open to hearing and understanding our point of view.
This assignment will address two issues:
·
Building an argument using convincing textual evidence
·
Writing in order to persuade an unsympathetic argument
THE ASSIGNMENT
:
Chapter 5 in Rereading America addresses the history and present realities of the tensions that have surrounded, and still surround, racial and ethnic differences in the United States.
We can broaden the range of this topic to include areas of class, sexual orientation, religion, gender, and political affiliation, at the least.
Each of these categories, including race, are populated by groups we could call “others”—groups that both are seen by the majority culture as being somehow “outside” and are viewed by the majority culture with a degree of suspicion.
In a four-and-a-half to five page, double-spaced, 12-point typeface essay, argue for how some of the ideas in TWO of the essays in chapter 5 of
Rereading America
apply to ONE of these groups of “others” of your choosing. Define the group carefully. Write to an audience who would doubt the validity of your topic, the book’s texts, and your argument. If you choose to write about an “other” that is defined by race or ethnicity, be specific in naming this group (e.g., Korean, or mixed-race, or Persian).
For example, I might take the arguments in Harris and Carbado’s essay and apply them to similar thought patterns I see in Orange County about people whom the majority culture in the OC might consider “others”—those out of the cultural mainstream. Perhaps I would select French people as my group of others. I could talk about how Orange Countians see French speaking people suspiciously—people who spend too much time thinking about food. This would be a fairly silly paper, but I could nonetheless choose this topic.
IMPORTANT ADVICE
: Read all four essays and the discussion board entries on the essays. Try choosing the focus of your essay by writing about ideas from the essays that strongly affect you; don’t start out with a particular group in mind. Once you have identified interesting ideas, then think about a group of “others.”

Course Goals:
This course will examine the experience of sports and leisure for different groups of Americans (e.g., African-Americans, women, working class), from colonial times to the present but primarily focused on the 20th century. My goal is to introduce students to historical analysis and argument through the examination of the sports and leisure time activities that won increasing popularity among Americans from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth century. This course will incorporate analytical categories from social history (class, race, gender, ethnicity) as well as the frameworks used by cultural, economic, and political history. This course will thus involve students in gaining a better understanding of the relationships that sports and leisure have with the social, economic, cultural and political forces at work in the United States and the world. Students will appreciate the issues that have affected sports participation over the years, including racial and gender discrimination, class economics, and commercialization.
Students are expected to learn not only the basic data of American social history of sports but also to express that knowledge in oral and written argument that employs evidence to prove historical theses. Precise assignments for discussion are given at the end of this syllabus. Students will also be expected to use the Blackboard site for discussion. This course is thus NOT about player statistics, won-loss records, and/or fantasy leagues. It is about understanding the role sports has played in American society over time, and that is a serious historical inquiry.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
1) Identify and analyze the changing meaning and significance of sports and leisure to American society and culture.
2) Discuss the major developments in sports as they were influenced by major social, economic, cultural and political forces in American history, and (in turn) how sports pa.

PPE Capstone: New Deal Politics
Spring 2020Required Reading Commentaries
You are required to write four commentaries on the course readings, submitting one per week for weeks 2-5 based on a date schedule that is provided below (see the end of the assignment). Your commentaries must be submitted on Canvas on the dates indicated on the schedule. Late commentaries will not be accepted.
Your commentaries should meet three goals: 1) give a summary of the key point(s) made in the course reading you are writing about based on your understanding; 2) provide some examples of the evidence used in the reading (possibly including direct quotes) to show how the author supports the key point(s); 3) devote at least two concluding paragraphs to connecting this reading to another class reading (this can be a reading from earlier in the quarter, or another reading assigned on the same date in cases where I have assigned more than one reading).
Part 1: Identify the key point or points in the reading. What is the main argument or key insight you see emerging from this reading? Can you give a quote from the text that supports your understanding of the reading?
Part 2: Identify at least two pieces of “evidence” that the author uses to support the main argument or key point of the reading. In the readings for this class, evidence will often be in the form of specific historical examples that support the larger claim. You should discuss some details from these examples to show how the author makes the point (again, direct quotes are fine, but you should also put some of this into your own words).
For instance, if a reading makes the argument that the declining political power of business interests was an important reason that the New Deal welfare state emerged, the author may then go on to support this point by showing how business interests tried to oppose Social Security, and yet it still passed despite this business opposition.
Also be sensitive to nuance in the author’s analysis, and try to point this out in your commentary. For example, perhaps the author argues that Social Security passed despite business opposition, but then goes on to acknowledge that business interests were able to modify Social Security afterwards in ways that suited their needs (so some business power was still relevant to what happened in the New Deal, even if not dominant).
Part 3: Conclude your commentary by thinking about what this reading adds to other readings in this class. This can include making some comparison with the other reading assigned on that same date in cases where I assign two readings. For example, perhaps you are writing on a reading that describes the positive accomplishments of the New Deal in relation to African Americans, and you want to consider how this fits with the other reading from that day that highlights how the New Deal actually perpetuated racial inequality. Or maybe the specific topic discussed by the reading fleshes out and supports an insigh ...

Week 6: Globalization and the Flattening of the World
Globalization.
Do you look at this concept as a positive (glass half-full) or negative (glass half-empty)?
The fall of Communism and the rise of global threats and globalization leveled the playing field for nations throughout the world. Nations began to expand their economic strategies, political theories, and collaborate to create new foreign policies. This new era of globalization hastened the progress of developing countries, but also provided resources for terrorist activities. Former tensions between rivals with varying religious and ethnic practices reared its ugly head leading to an increase in terrorism. This, in turn, lead nations and global governing bodies such as NATO, to react.
Last week you had the opportunity to reflect upon the information you have acquired during this course when you completed your Final Project. This week, you will be able to expand upon that reflection and review your fellow classmates' Final Projects. You will also examine the events from 1945–2000 and assess the effects and consequences of globalization. You will have the opportunity to analyze their opinions and consider how they compare and contrast to your own beliefs. Will their thoughts affect your viewpoints in the future?
Learning Objectives
By the end of this week, you should be able to:
Justify the choice of the most important element from your Top 3 list
Draw inferences from assessments, both positive and negative, of globalization and the effects on local and global levels
Evaluate the roles and responsibilities of today's world citizen
Identify political leaders, policies, and elements during the time of 1945–2000 that led to globalization and the flattening of the world

Assignment 2: Case of Anna O
One of the very first cases that caught Freud’s attention when he was starting to develop his psychoanalytic theory was that of Anna O, a patient of fellow psychiatrist Josef Breuer. Although Freud did not directly treat her, he did thoroughly analyze her case as he was fascinated by the fact that her hysteria was “cured” by Breuer. It is her case that he believes was the beginning of the psychoanalytic approach.
Through your analysis of this case, you will not only look deeper into Freud’s psychoanalytic theory but also see how Jung’s neo-psychoanalytic theory compares and contrasts with Freud’s theory.
Review the following:
The Case of Anna O.
One of the first cases that inspired Freud in the development of what would eventually become the Psychoanalytic Theory was the case of Anna O. Anna O. was actually a patient of one of Freud’s colleagues Josef Breuer. Using Breuer’s case notes, Freud was able to analyze the key facts of Anna O’s case.
Anna O. first developed her symptoms while she was taking care of her very ill father with whom she was extremely close. Some of her initial symptoms were loss of appetite to the extent of not eating, weakness, anemia, and development a severe nervous cough. Eventually she developed a severe optic headache and lost the ability to move her head, which then progressed into paralysis of both arms. Her symptoms were not solely physical as she would vacillate between a normal, mental state and a manic-type state in which she would become extremely agitated. There was even a notation of a time for which she hallucinated that the ribbons in her hair were snakes.
Toward the end of her father’s life she stopped speaking her native language of German and instead only spoke in English. A little over a year after she began taking care of her father he passed away. After his passing her symptoms grew to affect her vision, a loss of ability to focus her attention, more extreme hallucinations, and a number of suicidal attempts (Hurst, 1982).

Assignment 2: Inclusion versus Segregation
One of the top issues in special education is the ongoing debate of “inclusion versus segregation.” The idea of inclusion in education is that all students, no matter what disability they may have, should learn together in the same environment. Fully inclusive schools do not differentiate between special education courses and general education courses, but rather include students with learning, emotional, behavioral, or physical disabilities in classes with all of the other students.
The idea of segregation in education suggests that there are benefits to providing classes separate from general education classes that meet the needs of students with special needs. For some students, this may be for just one or two subjects, while for other students, this encompasses all of their courses.
In this assignment, you will consider those students who suffer from behavioral disorders or social skill deficits.
Using the module readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research observational learning. Then, address the following:
Based on your learning about observational learning in this module, what are the benefits that these students could gain through their inclusion into a regular classroom?
How could the principles of observational learning help to improve the classroom behavior of students with behavioral disorders or social skill deficits?
What are some of the classroom disadvantages for employing inclusion for other typically developing students?
Do you support the move toward inclusion? Why or why not?

Civil Rights Movement discussed in this course. Your thesis should address
the following two questions: What were the goals of the civil rights
movement that developed in the 1950s and 1960s and why did this black
freedom struggle assume the characteristics that it did? Your essay
should analyze primary documents on the injustices the movement sought to
redress, including the diverse motivations that inspired individual
participation & interpret the strategies that guided organized activism. You
should also consider the interpretation posited in the secondary source, At
the Dark End of the Street, in your analysis of the primary documents of the
civil rights movement.
Your essay should answer these questions by providing a detailed
presentation of primary & secondary evidence in support of your thesis.
Your thesis should be focused on the question identified in BOLD print
above.
Conventions of Historical Writing: The following components are
essential to a historical essay: 1) An introductory paragraph that establishes
the scope of the argument – including the specific time period, geographic
area, & demographics of the group of people you’ll discuss. 2) A thesis
statement (located at the end of the introduction) in which you establish a
specific position that you will defend in the body of your essay. 3) A
detailed presentation of evidence to support your thesis derived from both
lecture & course readings, with particular emphasis on primary documents.
Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that advances your
argument and is supported, in the body of the paragraph, by at least one
primary source. 4) A concluding paragraph that restates your argument and
explains its significance. No bibliography is needed. However, please cite
readings in the body of your paper by indicating the editor or author’s name

Assignment 2 Case of Anna OOne of the very first cases that cau.docxkendahudson
Both Freud and Jung would acknowledge that unconscious processes are at work in this woman's problems. However, they would come to different conclusions about the origin of these problems and the method by which she should be treated.
Research Freud’s and Jung’s theories of personality using your textbook, the Internet, and the Argosy University online library resources. Based on your research, respond to the following:
Compare and contrast Freud's view of the unconscious with Jung's view and apply this case example in your explanations.
On what specific points would they agree and disagree regarding the purpose and manifestation of the unconscious in the case of Anna?
How might they each approach the treatment of Anna? What might be those specific interventions? How might Anna experience these interventions considering her history?

The Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution limits the power of the police to make arrests, search people and their property, and seize objects and contraband, such as illegal drugs or weapons. These limits are the bedrock of search and seizure law and are ultimately at the root of your right to privacy.
Analyze the following case in preparation for a systematic approach to your synthesis of law and fact:
Terry v. Ohio

Write an eight to ten (8-10) page legal Memorandum paper in which you:
Summarize five (5) key aspects of
Terry v. Ohio
.
Posit whether or not you believe law enforcement violated Terry and the other men’s right to privacy which the Fourth Amendment guarantees. Justify your position.
Examine the dissenting opinion of Justice Douglas, as discussed in the case. Discuss the origins and importance of probable cause as it relates to law enforcement’s discretion to search Terry’s car in this case.
Examine the two part test provided by the Court in
Terry
that first asks whether the officer’s action is justified at its inception; and second, asks whether it is reasonably related in scope to the circumstances which justified the interference in the first place.

Examine the Court’s holding in
Terry
that provides that probable cause is based upon the totality of the circumstances. Review the factors that help shape the totality of circumstances, such as specialized knowledge of the officers, investigative inferences, personal observations of suspicious behavior, and information from other sources. Question whether these factors in question are too subjective to establish probable cause. Provide a rationale for your response.
Debate the validity of the Court’s holding that “whenever a police officer accosts an individual and restrains his freedom to walk away, he has “seized” that person with the meaning of the Fourth Amendment. Justify your response.

Assignment 2Larry Landlord has recently renovated an apartment a.docxkendahudson
Assignment 2
Larry Landlord has recently renovated an apartment and has put it on the market to be rented for $800.00 a month. Larry Landlord has been in business for approximately five (5) years and has had both positive and negative experiences with tenants. Larry Landlord is hoping to find a good, long-term tenant for his apartment. Roger Renter saw Larry’s sign for the apartment for rent and thought the location and the apartment would be perfect. Roger met Larry to look at the apartment and Roger fell in love with it. All of the interior fixtures had been replaced and the unit had a nice large closet. Roger noticed that although newly painted, the exterior of the apartment did show a little bit of wear. Because of the condition of the exterior of the building, Roger asked Larry about any roof leaks. Larry stated that he had never had a leak and was not aware of any leaks.
Roger and Larry entered into a valid contract for the rental of the apartment. (Note: The issue of whether or not a contract exists is NOT part of this question. For purposes of this question assume the contract is valid and there are no issues with the contract.)
Roger Renter was very happy in his new location; the apartment was quiet and the neighbors were friendly. Larry Landlord was also very happy because Roger Renter was a model tenant. Roger Renter paid on time and was quiet and respectful to other tenants.
The part of the country where Roger rented was rainy in the summertime. Roger rented and moved into the apartment in October. In June, a tremendous rainstorm occurred and Roger’s roof began to leak. The leak was minor at first and Roger merely put a trash can under the leak and had no other issues that month. When handing over his monthly rent check, Roger told Larry about the small leak. Larry thanked Roger for letting him know about the leak and told Roger he would have it fixed.
The next month the rains came again and the leak grew larger in Roger’s apartment. Roger was not home at the time of the rain and therefore the leak damaged some of Roger’s furniture. Roger called Larry to let him know that there was a leak and asked when it might be fixed. Roger also stated that he thought Larry had fixed the roof. Larry curtly stated, “When it rains, sometimes it pours. When it pours, sometimes it leaks.” Roger did not like Larry’s tone or response and called back to ask when the roof might be fixed. Larry stated, “When I get to it.” The following day, Roger sent Larry a note about the roof leak and asked Larry to please address the issue.
The week before the rent was due, another rainstorm occurred and the leak was even larger. This time the leak damaged Roger’s clothing, furniture, and some precious items he had inherited from family members. Roger called Larry and asked Larry to fix roof immediately. Larry responded in a similar and condescending manner. Roger hung up the phone and threw his baseball bat against the wall, damaging the drywall and knock.

This is your relationship score.
Total scores: Task ______34________ Relationship ___38_________

The behavioral approach has several strengths and weaknesses. On the positive side, it has broadened the scope of leadership research to include the study of the behaviors of leaders rather than only their personal traits or characteristics. Second, it is a reliable approach because it is supported by a wide range of studies. Third, the behavioral approach is valuable because it underscores the importance of the two core dimensions of leadership behavior: task and relationship. Fourth, it has heuristic value in that it provides us with a broad conceptual map that is useful in gaining an understanding of our own leadership behaviors. On the negative side, researchers have not been able to associate the behaviors of leaders (task and relationship) with outcomes such as morale, job satisfaction, and productivity. In addition, researchers from the behavioral approach have not been able to identify a universal set of leadership behaviors that would consistently result in effective leadership. Last, the behavioral approach implies but fails to support fully the idea that the most effective leadership style is a high–high style (i.e., high task and high relationship).
Overall, the behavioral approach is not a refined theory that provides a neatly organized set of prescriptions for effective leadership behavior. Rather, the behavioral approach provides a valuable framework for assessing leadership in a broad way as assessing behavior with task and

You will write a 2-page reflection about yourself. The goal of this paper is to reflect on your own socialization. A good place to start is by reading Sensoy & DiAngelo’s (2017) chapter on “Socialization,” (attached in files) and reflecting on your own
socialization
, particularly thinking about Discussion Question #4 at the end of the chapter:
Many sociologists say that in part how we come to know ourselves is by knowing who we are not. Sociologist Charles Cooley described this process as the “looking glass self” to capture the idea that it is what others reflect back to us that teaches us who we are—that is, our ideas about ourselves are based on how we see ourselves (people
like
us) in relation to others (people
not like
us). What kind of people did you learn were different from you? In which ways were they different? How were you taught about this difference? If you were told that everyone was the same, did the implicit messages of your environment match this explicit message? For example, what key groups (such as the elderly, people with disabilities, people of different social classes than your own, people from different religious groups, people from different racial groups) were you segregated from? As you reflect on this question, consider implicit (unspoken) messages as well as explicit (direct) messages (p. 85).

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Discussion – Rethinking American Origins
After reading the historical documents for this Module, how has
your understanding of America’s origins changed? For example,
what new things have you learned about the early American
immigrant experience? What effect does this new knowledge
have on how you think about crucial elements of American life,
like property ownership, citizenship, freedom (and other
political ideals), as well as the “American Dream”?
