Making arguments in our lives usually means persuading an audience; often it means, if it is a real argument, addressing a group that is not completely open to hearing and understanding our point of view.
This assignment will address two issues:

Building an argument using convincing textual evidence
·
Writing in order to persuade an unsympathetic argument
THE ASSIGNMENT
:
Chapter 5 in Rereading America addresses the history and present realities of the tensions that have surrounded, and still surround, racial and ethnic differences in the United States.
We can broaden the range of this topic to include areas of class, sexual orientation, religion, gender, and political affiliation, at the least.
Each of these categories, including race, are populated by groups we could call “others”—groups that both are seen by the majority culture as being somehow “outside” and are viewed by the majority culture with a degree of suspicion.
In a four-and-a-half to five page, double-spaced, 12-point typeface essay, argue for how some of the ideas in TWO of the essays in chapter 5 of
Rereading America
apply to ONE of these groups of “others” of your choosing. Define the group carefully. Write to an audience who would doubt the validity of your topic, the book’s texts, and your argument. If you choose to write about an “other” that is defined by race or ethnicity, be specific in naming this group (e.g., Korean, or mixed-race, or Persian).
For example, I might take the arguments in Harris and Carbado’s essay and apply them to similar thought patterns I see in Orange County about people whom the majority culture in the OC might consider “others”—those out of the cultural mainstream. Perhaps I would select French people as my group of others. I could talk about how Orange Countians see French speaking people suspiciously—people who spend too much time thinking about food. This would be a fairly silly paper, but I could nonetheless choose this topic.
IMPORTANT ADVICE
: Read all four essays and the discussion board entries on the essays. Try choosing the focus of your essay by writing about ideas from the essays that strongly affect you; don’t start out with a particular group in mind. Once you have identified interesting ideas, then think about a group of “others.”

Overview of Critical Methodologies
Imagine 3 pairs of glasses, and each pair of glasses represents a different “lens” through which the wearer of the glasses can view the world. Same world...different view based on the color of the lens.
Critical methodologies (also known as critical approaches) function in the same way. In a nutshell, critical methodologies are different LENSES through which a reader can examine a particular text (short story, poem, play, novel, etc.). Alison Booth and Kelly J. Mays, the editors of our textbook, classify critical approaches into four major categories:
Critical approaches that emphasize the text,
Critical approaches that emphasize the source,
Critical approaches that emphasize the receiver, and
Critical approaches that highlight historical and ideological criticism.
Each major category houses a number of critical approaches.
Emphasis on the Text - This approach limits the consideration of outside elements- author background, social factors, etc.
New Criticism - does not take into consideration source (author) or reader (you)

Emphasis on the Source - This approach takes into consideration the author and author’s intention in writing the work.
Biographical Criticism

Some suggestive options:
1) Analyze Thoreau's "Civil Disobedience" in light of a contemporary example or figure or incident in the tradition of American civil disobedience.
2) Analyze the persuasive and rhetorical strategies of one of the transcendental pieces (or King's "Letter") that we have read. You might look at issues of audience, style, emotional vs./and rational appeal, appeals to history/tradition or rejection of history/tradtion, metaphoric style, tone and so forth. If you deem them successful, why/how do they succeed in arguing their points? What might be points of counterargument or criticism or weaknesses in their approach? Does it work as a piece of argument/writing?
3) Pick one (or several if you feel it's appropriate) key concepts or quotes from a work (or several works) and discuss the concept/quote in terms of how it has evolved or put it in larger context. How have these words taken form in our laws, practice, literature, or culture? Where are the gaps between the great ideals of these writers' words and the reality of their times and/or ours? e.g. How might MLK (in light of his "Letter") feel about the society and civil rights situation we see today?
4) You could pick one, two, or three key themes from any of the works and discuss how the text fleshes out these themes and why they are important to our understanding of the period, or the particular writer, or to transcendentalism as a movement, or to American tradition or literature and so forth.
5) You could pick a theme which runs through several of the texts (for example, something about the role or nature of the individual) and trace it through its different configuration and representations.
Essay length: 4-5 pages -- again, I'm always more concerned with minimum than limiting any maximum length.

Literary Critical Theory is a tool that helps you find meaning in stories, poems and
plays. There are many different ways to interpret a novel or short story.
When we read literature, we do so to learn more about:
● The human condition
● The experience of loss and death
● The structure of power in society and how it is implemented (including the issues
that surround race and gender).
● The psychology of characters and individuals in general
● The sociology and history of cultures that produce specific pieces of literature
Literary Theory helps us discover the things listed above in the books and stories we
read. So how do you use theory to read a book? Before exploring, in brief, different
theories, it is important to develop a reading strategy that will help you form ideas.
You should keep a reading notebook and write down ideas and information as you
read. Here is a checklist of things to notice:
● Title. How does it pertain to the story? Does it symbolize events or people in the
story?
● Narration: Who is telling the story? How does the narrator approach the topic?
● Subject: What is the basic situation? What is happening to the characters and how
are they reacting to events?
● Mood: What is the mood of the story, i.e. the emotional background? How is it
expressed in the language and setting?
● Characters: What do the characters learn in the course of the story? What are their
failings and how do they overcome them, or not? What is the main character’s
desire? Is that desire ever fulfilled? How does the main character change?
● Character Interaction: How do the characters interact in the story? How do they
communicate with each other? How do they handle conflict?
● Plot: What are the main events in the plot that lead the character to new insights, or
to his or her failure?
When you read a book, you can highlight the passages that strike you as significant. You
can also write notes in the margin of the text to yourself, which is called “annotation.”

Critical discourse analysis
Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) examines the relationship between language use and social/political contexts. It explores how issues like ethnicity, gender, ideology, and cultural differences are constructed and reflected in texts. CDA analyzes how power relations are negotiated and performed through language use, and how discourse both reflects and reproduces social relations. CDA aims to pay attention to all levels of discourse, including verbal and non-verbal communication, as well as relations of power, dominance, and inequality.

Making arguments in our lives usually means persuading an audience; often it means, if it is a real argument, addressing a group that is not completely open to hearing and understanding our point of view.
This assignment will address two issues:

Building an argument using convincing textual evidence
·
Writing in order to persuade an unsympathetic argument
THE ASSIGNMENT
:
Chapter 5 in Rereading America addresses the history and present realities of the tensions that have surrounded, and still surround, racial and ethnic differences in the United States.
We can broaden the range of this topic to include areas of class, sexual orientation, religion, gender, and political affiliation, at the least.
Each of these categories, including race, are populated by groups we could call “others”—groups that both are seen by the majority culture as being somehow “outside” and are viewed by the majority culture with a degree of suspicion.
In a four-and-a-half to five page, double-spaced, 12-point typeface essay, argue for how some of the ideas in TWO of the essays in chapter 5 of
Rereading America
apply to ONE of these groups of “others” of your choosing. Define the group carefully. Write to an audience who would doubt the validity of your topic, the book’s texts, and your argument. If you choose to write about an “other” that is defined by race or ethnicity, be specific in naming this group (e.g., Korean, or mixed-race, or Persian).
For example, I might take the arguments in Harris and Carbado’s essay and apply them to similar thought patterns I see in Orange County about people whom the majority culture in the OC might consider “others”—those out of the cultural mainstream. Perhaps I would select French people as my group of others. I could talk about how Orange Countians see French speaking people suspiciously—people who spend too much time thinking about food. This would be a fairly silly paper, but I could nonetheless choose this topic.
IMPORTANT ADVICE
: Read all four essays and the discussion board entries on the essays. Try choosing the focus of your essay by writing about ideas from the essays that strongly affect you; don’t start out with a particular group in mind. Once you have identified interesting ideas, then think about a group of “others.”

In this essay you should combine your practice responding and analyzing short stories with support derived from research. So far, in the discussion boards, we have practiced primarily formal analysis. Now I want you to practice "joining the conversation." In this essay you will write a literary analysis that incorporates the ideas of others. The trick is to accurately present ideas and interpretations gathered from your research while adding to the conversation by presenting

You will be evaluated, in part, on how well you use external sources. I want to see that you can quote, paraphrase and summarize without plagiarizing. Remember, any unique idea must be credited, even if you put it in your own words.

Overview of Critical Methodologies
Imagine 3 pairs of glasses, and each pair of glasses represents a different “lens” through which the wearer of the glasses can view the world. Same world...different view based on the color of the lens.
Critical methodologies (also known as critical approaches) function in the same way. In a nutshell, critical methodologies are different LENSES through which a reader can examine a particular text (short story, poem, play, novel, etc.). Alison Booth and Kelly J. Mays, the editors of our textbook, classify critical approaches into four major categories:
Critical approaches that emphasize the text,
Critical approaches that emphasize the source,
Critical approaches that emphasize the receiver, and
Critical approaches that highlight historical and ideological criticism.
Each major category houses a number of critical approaches.
Emphasis on the Text - This approach limits the consideration of outside elements- author background, social factors, etc.
New Criticism - does not take into consideration source (author) or reader (you)

Where are the gaps between the great ideals of these writers' words and the reality of their times and/or ours? e.g. How might MLK (in light of his "Letter") feel about the society and civil rights situation we see today?
4) You could pick one, two, or three key themes from any of the works and discuss how the text fleshes out these themes and why they are important to our understanding of the period, or the particular writer, or to transcendentalism as a movement, or to American tradition or literature and so forth.
5) You could pick a theme which runs through several of the texts (for example, something about the role or nature of the individual) and trace it through its different configuration and representations.
Essay length: 4-5 pages -- again, I'm always more concerned with minimum than limiting any maximum length.

Literary Critical Theory is a tool that helps you find meaning in stories, poems and
plays. There are many different ways to interpret a novel or short story.
When we read literature, we do so to learn more about:
● The human condition
● The experience of loss and death
● The structure of power in society and how it is implemented (including the issues
that surround race and gender).
● The psychology of characters and individuals in general
● The sociology and history of cultures that produce specific pieces of literature
Literary Theory helps us discover the things listed above in the books and stories we
read. So how do you use theory to read a book? Before exploring, in brief, different
theories, it is important to develop a reading strategy that will help you form ideas.
You should keep a reading notebook and write down ideas and information as you
read. Here is a checklist of things to notice:
● Title. How does it pertain to the story? Does it symbolize events or people in the
story?
● Narration: Who is telling the story? How does the narrator approach the topic?
● Subject: What is the basic situation? What is happening to the characters and how
are they reacting to events?
● Mood: What is the mood of the story, i.e. the emotional background? How is it
expressed in the language and setting?
● Characters: What do the characters learn in the course of the story? What are their
failings and how do they overcome them, or not? What is the main character’s
desire? Is that desire ever fulfilled? How does the main character change?
● Character Interaction: How do the characters interact in the story? How do they
communicate with each other? How do they handle conflict?
● Plot: What are the main events in the plot that lead the character to new insights, or
to his or her failure?
When you read a book, you can highlight the passages that strike you as significant. You
can also write notes in the margin of the text to yourself, which is called “annotation.”
