ONLINE RESEARCH
Research the Paris Opera. Find 5 interesting facts that are not
included in the textbook reading. Please submit your facts here
and share them in the STUDENT LOUNGE. Please include the
reasons why you find these facts interesting.
Answer
1. The paris opera started on 28 June 1669 by Pierre Perrin.
Perrin's original concept of Paris Opera was of an academy
devoted to discussions of French opera. However, king tended
to make the opera to be a hybrid of of royal academy and public
theatre. Perrin had the right to decide business partners and
tickets price.
2. During Lully's tenure, the only works performed were his
own.
3.After Lully died, the number of new works per year almost
doubled, since his successors had difficulty sustaining the
interest of the public.
4.When Lully took over the Opéra in 1672, Louis XIV and
Beauchamp made theatrical ballet an important part of the
company's productions. The ballet of that time was merely an
extension of the opera, having yet to evolve into an independent
form of theatrical art.
5. Regardless of all the changes in its "official" name, the
company and its theatres were commonly referred to as the
Opéra.
I found theses facts are interesting because no matter how
managing directors changed, they are always linked to
privilege. That's how culture always closely to history.

Answer
White Nights is directed by Taylor Hackford and
choreographed by Twyla Tharp in 1985. There many famous
stars like Mikhail Baryshnikov, Gregory Hines, Jerzy
Skolimowski, Helen Mirren and Isabella Rossellini. I just
watched this movie today because of the famous music “Say
You, Say Me”. I knew this song before but just knew this is the
song in Whint Nights.
Nikolai Rodchenko who is a ballet dancer defected from
Soviet 8 years ago encountered a plan crash and landed in
Soviet Union. The Soviet officials forced him to perform in
Soviet Union. Those officials thought that he would bring a
large political significance. They arranged Raymond Greenwood
who defected from the USA to practice dance performance with
Rodchenko. During the practice, Greenwood’s desire to dance
freedom was awake, especially when he found his wife was
pregnant. At last, he decides to escape with Rodchenko
together.
This movie was shot in Finland, Portugal, the United
Kingdom, the Soviet Union and Austria.
White Nights, which refers to the area of Soviet Union in
the Artic Circle. In this area during the whole summer, the sun
will never fall, even in the midnight. This is an obvious
metaphor that no matter how long the white nights are, it will
still over. I think the strength of this movie is the comparison
between the officials and the dancers. Those officials take
advantages of dance as a political performance. However,
during this performance, the dancers were pursuing the freedom.
The background of this movie is cold war. Though it may not
based of fact, but it’s a very realistic story about politics and
human nature. For example, in this movie the officials always
smiled but the gave people an impression of corrupt. They
always threat, monitor, track and look forward the reward from
higher. In the other hand, the dancers’ desire of freedom
awaked, and they fight against the imprisonment. I think the
actors did a very good job. Which impressed me most is when
the ballet dancer in the large stage alone, he kept jumping but
falling down, at last he could just cry. The climax of this story
is when they started to escape from Soviet. The encountered a
lot of difficulties. At last they overcame them and succeed
escaping from Soviet. This is an old movie in the Clod War.
Those systems may disappeared in Russia; however, there stiil
exists some people who fight for freedom. I will recommend
this movie to my friends. Actually the plot is very old, but how
this movie perform is amazing and the theme of this movie is
moving, too.

The ballet of that time was merely an extension of the opera, having yet to evolve into an independent form of theatrical art. 5. Regardless of all the changes in its "official" name, the company and its theatres were commonly referred to as the Opéra. Answer White Nights is directed by Taylor Hackford and choreographed by Twyla Tharp in 1985. There many famous stars like Mikhail Baryshnikov, Gregory Hines, Jerzy Skolimowski, Helen Mirren and Isabella Rossellini. I just watched this movie today because of the famous music “Say You, Say Me”. I knew this song before but just knew this is the song in Whint Nights. Nikolai Rodchenko who is a ballet dancer defected from Soviet 8 years ago encountered a plan crash and landed in Soviet Union. The Soviet officials forced him to perform in Soviet Union. Those officials thought that he would bring a large political significance. They arranged Raymond Greenwood
  • 4. who defected from the USA to practice dance performance with Rodchenko. During the practice, Greenwood’s desire to dance freedom was awake, especially when he found his wife was pregnant. At last, he decides to escape with Rodchenko together. This movie was shot in Finland, Portugal, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union and Austria. White Nights, which refers to the area of Soviet Union in the Artic Circle. In this area during the whole summer, the sun will never fall, even in the midnight. This is an obvious metaphor that no matter how long the white nights are, it will still over. I think the strength of this movie is the comparison between the officials and the dancers. Those officials take advantages of dance as a political performance. However, during this performance, the dancers were pursuing the freedom. The background of this movie is cold war. Though it may not based of fact, but it’s a very realistic story about politics and human nature. For example, in this movie the officials always smiled but the gave people an impression of corrupt. They always threat, monitor, track and look forward the reward from higher. In the other hand, the dancers’ desire of freedom awaked, and they fight against the imprisonment. I think the actors did a very good job. Which impressed me most is when the ballet dancer in the large stage alone, he kept jumping but falling down, at last he could just cry. The climax of this story is when they started to escape from Soviet. The encountered a lot of difficulties. At last they overcame them and succeed escaping from Soviet. This is an old movie in the Clod War. Those systems may disappeared in Russia; however, there stiil exists some people who fight for freedom. I will recommend this movie to my friends. Actually the plot is very old, but how this movie perform is amazing and the theme of this movie is moving, too.
