The following virtual service case has been developed as an
interactive supplement to the Reid & Sanders Operations
Management textbook. The case requires you, the student, to
assume the role of an intern working for Cruise International,
Inc. (CII). Cruise International operates cruise ships globally.
During your internship you will be working at corporate
headquarters on both strategic and tactical issues as well as on
board one or more of our cruise ships. While Cruise
International is a fictional company, much of the data used with
regard to the cruise industry is real. There has been some
manipulation of the data to include Cruise International as part
of the industry. Much of the data has been adapted from an annual report done by the Cruise Lines
International Association, Inc. The style and format of this virtual case draws heavily from the previous
Virtual Company Consulting Case developed by Ted Helmer of Theodore Helmer and Associates, Inc. and
Jon Ozmun of Northern Arizona University.
An Overview of the Cruise Industry
In 2006, the size of the worldwide cruise market was approximately 12 million passengers. Of those 12
million passengers, 10 million passengers embarked on cruise voyages from ports in North America. The
U.S. cruise passengers, representing approximately 78% of the worldwide cruise passengers, have about 9
million passenger embarkations.
The total economic impact of the cruise lines, passengers, and their U.S. suppliers reached $35.7 billion
according to a study done by the Business Research and Economic Advisors (BREA). In the BREA report,
it shows the following U.S. industries that most benefited from the cruise industry.
Professional & Technical Services $4.0 billion
Nondurable Goods Manufacturing $4.8 billion
Travel Services $3.9 billion
Financial Services $2.3 billion
Airline Transportation $2.1 billion
Wholesale Trade $1.8 billion
Direct spending of the cruise lines and their passengers on goods and services produced in the United
States in 2006 was $17.6 billion. This spending resulted in 348,000 U.S. jobs paying $14.7 billion in wages.
In 2006, the top ten U.S. cruise port cities, ranked by number of embarkations, were Miami, Port Canaveral,
Port Everglades, Galveston, Los Angeles, New York, Tampa, Long Beach, Seattle, and Honolulu. Florida
remains the center of the U.S. cruising industry, accounting for almost 56% of the embarkations. California's
cruise ports represented nearly 14% of all U.S. embarkations. Texas is the highest growth market. New
York increased embarkations to 536,000 with the opening of the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. U.S. ports of call
had approximately five million cruise ship visits in 2006. Most of the visits were to Alaska, Hawaii, and Key
West.

Housekeeping cleans the public areas of the ship as well as the staterooms. Information Technology is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all areas of the cruise ship's onboard computer system. The Cruise Staff is responsible for maintaining guest relations.

Yearly, the airline industry makes lucrative, financial decisions as they pertain to collecting profitable assets for the business. As of 1930, more than 30 airlines have exercised the option of merging with another; some have succeeded, some have failed, particularly on a financial aspect. Running a business requires time, money, and of course the knowledge of running a business. Some people start off small; presenting a business in which focuses on a one area at a time. Eventually, that business can expand by globalizing its brand from state-to-state, country-to-country, or wherever their product will sell.
Assessing the situation:
One airline in particular is American Airlines; once known as American Airways, “now American Airlines”, was founded in 1930. With an operating income of more than 300 million dollars, and total revenue of 22 billion, they are the United States number one operating airline. Although final mergers pertaining to complete destination routes, and plane makeovers, American Airlines, and US Airways will create a monstrous foundation to keep the number one spot atop the airline rankings.
Assessing the situation, an unlimited amount of information is available, and discussion amongst the two airlines merging is viewable via the company’s web site, or via an Internet source. As a strategist, assessing any given situation can be tricky; mainly because of the pros and cons presented to the business. American Airlines and US Airways operated under different methods of intelligence. These methods pertain to the airlines focusing on demographics; demographics are quantifiable statistics of a given population. As both airlines initially serviced multiple countries, unwanted problems can arise at any time. These unwanted problems are usually not seen by the innovators because an innovator cannot be everywhere at the same time.
Identifying of the problem and opportunity:
Identifying unwanted situations can only upgrade the opportunities for the airline as a whole. Merging US Airways with American Airlines will bring the fleet size up to more than 800 aircrafts. Some people may take notice of the 800 aircrafts as a positive statement to the business, whereas others who travel for a living may beg to differ; this is mentioned because of air traffic. A fact in which some people may not know is; the owners of an airline company is not guaranteed air slots or space, all proposals must be discussed and brought to the attention the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Conjoining two airlines and clogging the friendly skies with airplanes is sufficiently unsafe. A good aspect and opportunity of the merger is the notion of the airline having what I like to call, “cap space”. In my own definition, cap space will allow the airline to have a certain amount of aircrafts on standby incase of mechanical or passenger overbooked situations.

As of 1930, more than 30 airlines have exercised the option of merging with another; some have succeeded, some have failed, particularly on a financial aspect. Running a business requires time, money, and of course the knowledge of running a business. Some people start off small; presenting a business in which focuses on a one area at a time. Eventually, that business can expand by globalizing its brand from state-to-state, country-to-country, or wherever their product will sell.
Assessing the situation:
One airline in particular is American Airlines; once known as American Airways, “now American Airlines”, was founded in 1930. With an operating income of more than 300 million dollars, and total revenue of 22 billion, they are the United States number one operating airline. Although final mergers pertaining to complete destination routes, and plane makeovers, American Airlines, and US Airways will create a monstrous foundation to keep the number one spot atop the airline rankings.

Wilson is an 11-year-old boy who was diagnosed with ASD as a toddler. He is physically healthy, but he is very sensitive to hot, cold, noises, and pain. He does not like crowds or lines and struggles with class assemblies, lunch time periods, and recesses. He is in a self-contained special education classroom on a public school campus and attends general education class for music only. He is capable of doing some general education class work, but his behavior is far too unpredictable to make further placement in a general education classroom feasible at this time. He can be impulsive and destructive when frustrated or overwhelmed. He is quite social and enjoys interacting with his peers in both settings; however, it can be difficult to discern when he will have a meltdown. He has tantrums and destroys property, and his participation in some aspects of school is limited. When changes in the schedule occur, such as school assemblies or fire drills, Wilson has a hard time adjusting and oftentimes tips over desks or kicks. He has not been able to attend the last two field trips due to his parents’ concerns for his safety.

Cole is a 16-year-old boy with ASD and cognitive delays. He was born three weeks premature and required intensive neonatal care for six weeks after birth, but he is currently in good health. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

assume the role of an intern working for Cruise International,
Inc. (CII). Cruise International operates cruise ships globally.
During your internship you will be working at corporate
headquarters on both strategic and tactical issues as well as on
board one or more of our cruise ships. While Cruise
International is a fictional company, much of the data used with
regard to the cruise industry is real. There has been some
manipulation of the data to include Cruise International as part
of the industry. Much of the data has been adapted from an
annual report done by the Cruise Lines
International Association, Inc. The style and format of this
virtual case draws heavily from the previous
Virtual Company Consulting Case developed by Ted Helmer of
Theodore Helmer and Associates, Inc. and
Jon Ozmun of Northern Arizona University.
An Overview of the Cruise Industry
In 2006, the size of the worldwide cruise market was
8. approximately 12 million passengers. Of those 12
million passengers, 10 million passengers embarked on cruise
voyages from ports in North America. The
U.S. cruise passengers, representing approximately 78% of the
worldwide cruise passengers, have about 9
million passenger embarkations.
The total economic impact of the cruise lines, passengers, and
their U.S. suppliers reached $35.7 billion
according to a study done by the Business Research and
Economic Advisors (BREA). In the BREA report,
it shows the following U.S. industries that most benefited from
the cruise industry.

States in 2006 was $17.6 billion. This spending resulted in
348,000 U.S. jobs paying $14.7 billion in wages.
In 2006, the top ten U.S. cruise port cities, ranked by number of
embarkations, were Miami, Port Canaveral,
Port Everglades, Galveston, Los Angeles, New York, Tampa,
Long Beach, Seattle, and Honolulu. Florida
remains the center of the U.S. cruising industry, accounting for

cruise ports represented nearly 14% of all U.S. embarkations.
Texas is the highest growth market. New
York increased embarkations to 536,000 with the opening of the
Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. U.S. ports of call
had approximately five million cruise ship visits in 2006. Most
of the visits were to Alaska, Hawaii, and Key
West.
