  03:
  Monologues
  of

the
  object.

A  creative  video  about  an  object’s  expression,
recounting  its  history,  experience,  emotions
and  etc.  Use  objects,  spaces  and  materials
you  can  find  anywhere.  These  ‘objects’  must
be  inanimate  objects,  which  means  ‘non-living’
except  for  smartphones.  Living  things  aren’t
allowed  including  plants.  Fruits  however  are
allowed.  J

The  Brief

We  see  things  we  take  for  granted  everyday.
What  are  those  things?  Could  they  be  rooms,
materials  we  use  and  never  realized  that  they
have  so  much  of  value.  What  about  simple
machines,  objects  that  physically  support  us,
shelter  us  or  have  realized  something  else  that
we  never  thought  about?  If  you  were  them,
how  would  you  reflect?

What  would  this  object  say  if  it  could  talk  and
wanted  to  tell  us  about  its  history?  Where  has
it  been?  What  it  has  done?  What  events  it  has
witnessed?  How  does  it  feel?  How  deep  is  its
relationship  to  humans?  Can  the  object
describe  critically  about  injustice  and  what
should/could  be  done  for  improvements?
Can  the  object  should  tell  about  its  past  and
present,  but  also  about  its  hopes  for  the  future.
If  it  has  conversations  with  other  objects  what
would  they  talk  about?
CTS  element:  emphatic  projection,  ideation,
basic  research  skills,  understanding
observation,  choice-making,  aspects  of
innovation.
Task
Create  a  video  monologue  involving  inanimate
objects.  What  is  a  monologue?  A  monologue
is  a  speech  or  conversation  by  a  character
expression  their  thoughts,  emotions  and  etc

selection  as  a  character  and  create  a  video  of
the  object’s  expression  creatively.  Dialogues

Use  the  video  as  your  tool  to  convince  the
audience  about  the  object’s  point  of  view.
Assignment  Criteria:
The  video  should  have:
1.   Footage  of  the  selected  object
2.   Clear,  audible  speeches,
conversations  or  dialogues  from  the
object/objects
3.   Subtitles
4.   Quality  and  entertaining
conversations:
a.   Expression  –  emotions
b.   Knowledge

want  this  as  an  individual  entry,  please
discuss  with  your  lecturer.

the  audience  interested  to  listen  more

-   Can  a  little  controversial
-   Entertaining
-   Can  use  your  own  voice  or  other
voices
-   Conduct  lots  of  referencing  in  youtube
for  examples  of  what  others  have
done.  Notice  number  of  views  and  aim
for  your  video  to  be  more  engaging!
-   Animation  or  stop-motion  techniques
is  optional.
-   Human  subject  appearing  alongside
the  object  or  part  of  the  story  is
optional  as  long  as  the  object  is  the
main  focus.
-   You  can  use  any  video  medium  –
smartphones,  video  cams,  DSLR  and
etc
-   Use  any  editing  software  except  for
trial  versions.
Oh

“gulp!”

-   Footage  must  be  horizontally  framed
and  720p  resolution,  mp4  format
Style  ideas  options
-   Can  be  colour  or  black  and  white
-   You  can  use  documentary  style
-   Music  video
-   Simple  interview  with  mixed  footage
(open  to  discussion)
-   Your  own  suggestions  (discuss  with
your  lecturer)
Methodology:
1.   Survey  and  select  your
‘object’/objects.  Take  snapshots  and
place  them  in  your  IDJ.  Indicate  your
observations.
2.   Research  about  the  object  and
discover  origins,  developmental
history,  design,  problems  and  etc
3.   Put  yourself  in  its  shoes  and  create  a
script.  Pretend  that  the  object  can  talk
and  you  asked  it  to  talk  about  itself
and  its  experiences
4.   Use  six-hats  mindmap  as  your
ideation  process  and  discussions  for
tutorials.

There  are  loads  of  examples  on  youtube.  Here
are  some  screen  grabs  of  some  that  was
found.  As  you  would  notice,  there  are  also
various  film-making  qualities.  But  what  is  more
important  is:  how  can  the  object  matter?
Watch  these  and  critically  study  them  and
cleverly  incorporate  the  criteria  of  this
assignment.
