ARTEMIS MISSION
2. INTRODUCTION
Mission launched by NASA in 2017.
Extension to THEMIS Mission launched by
NASA in 2007.
Named after Greek Goddess of Moon,
ARTEMIS
3. THEMIS MISSION
NASA's Time History of Events and Macroscale
Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS)
THEMIS's goal was to determine what physical
process in near-Earth space initiates the violent
eruptions of the aurora that occur during
substorms in Earth's magnetosphere.
In 2010, two of its five spacecraft were
repurposed as ARTEMIS to study the Moon's
interactions with the Sun.

6. What is Artemis?
ARTEMIS stands for “Acceleration,
Reconnection, Turbulence and Electrodynamics
of the Moon’s Interaction with the Sun”
Artist's concept of the Space Launch System
rocket and Orion capsule prepared for launch.
NASA is committed to landing American
astronauts, including the first woman and the next
man, on the Moon by 2024.
7. GOAL
At the Moon, we will:
Find and use water and other critical resources
needed for long-term exploration
Investigate the Moon’s mysteries and learn more
about our home planet and the universe.
8. Continued……
Learn how to live and operate on the surface of
another celestial body where astronauts are just
three days from home
Prove the technologies we need before sending
astronauts on missions to Mars, which can take
up to three years roundtrip
