Introduction
Arrange marriages are traditional and continue to account for an overwhelming majority of
marriages in the Indian subcontinent. In the urban culture of modern India, the differentiation
between arranged and love marriages is increasingly seen as a "false dichotomy’’. But coming here
in the 21st
century the face of arrange marriages has changed. Commonly in urban areas and
increasingly in rural parts, parents arrange for marriage-ready sons and daughters to meet with
multiple potential spouses with an accepted right of refusal. These arranged marriages are
effectively the result of a wide search by both the girl's family and the boy's family. In India marriage
is the thought to be for life, marriages are till now considered as the important decision of life. So this
report is a sincere attempt to know that what really is the perception and choices of people are when
it comes to arrange marriages.
The study conducted is presented in the form of report which is divided into various chapters.

information for completion of this report.

Background/ introduction
In India, arranged marriages still remain the majorly preferred way for Indians to enter into
matrimony. In case of an arranged marriage, parents and other relatives decide on a life partner
that they deem suitable for their child. They keep in mind various factors, different for boys and
girls, while searching for a suitable match to attach their names with. It’s a tradition Indians find
hard to part with. Even in the 21st Century, around 85 percent Indians prefer to marry the boy or
girl chosen by their families, rather than choosing their life partners themselves. This statistics
was reveled in a survey conducted by the Taj Group of Hotels. Another survey by IPSOS in
2013, revealed that 74% of young Indians, aged between 18-35 years said that they would rather
let their parents choose their life partners, than choosing themselves.
History & Evolution
Historically speaking, weddings during the Vedic times took place by a variety of methods. While
arranged marriages were preferred, the consent of the bride was generally taken into consideration. In
case of royal families, parents arranged a Swayamvar, a ceremony where suitable matches from all over
the country were invited. Thereafter, either these suitors had to prove their prowess to win over the girl, or
the girl herself will choose one of them, by offering him a flower garland. Even love marriages and
elopements were quite common. The couple in love will elope and undergo what is known as
‘Gandharva’ type of marriage.
From around 500 BC, the Vedic Hindu culture gave rise to what we have come to known as Hinduism.
The Manu Smriti, a religious discourse that outlined the do’s and don’ts for regarding duties, rights, laws,
code of conduct, and virtues to be practiced by people practicing family life, if they want to lead a life of
sanctified dharma. These rules were seeped in patriarchal tones and advocated stripping women of their
basic independence, from a belief that independent women spread promiscuity. The women from this
time on were put under the shackles of forced patriarchy, having to live under the guardianship of a man
in all stages of life: Father when she is unmarried, Husband when she is married and son when she is
old/widowed.
As position of women in the society degraded, the concept of marriage and her role in it also changed.
Previous custom of asking for her consent was abolished and rituals like dowry, child marriages,
exchange marriage and other derogatory customs began to rise. Arranged marriages became the most
prevalent way of marriage in the country and among Hindus especially.

Arranged Marriage in Modern Times
Although the practice of arranged marriage has remained favored in the country, the whole
procedure has seen some major modernizing changes. For instance, computers, websites and
portals have taken over the job of traditional matchmakers, with computer programs predicting
matches for individuals. Several marriage portals have sprung up over the last decade or so and
while organizations like Bharat Matrimony, and Shaadi have been in the arena for quite some
time, upcoming platforms like SimplyMarry are also proving to be worthy contenders.
Nowadays, the criteria for matches have also changed - for example in urban areas, working
women are often preferred as better matches and their professional stature is considered similarly
to the grooms. Emphasis is put on education and values, rather than just efficiency in the
domestic arena. Criteria like blood tests are also gaining more and more favor among the urban
community. The prospective partners are allowed to interact more freely nowadays, over the
phone or even face to face. The concept of courtship has gained favors with the couple getting
the opportunity to know each other, sometimes for as long a year between the actual marriage
dates. While not much have changed in the rural areas, there still is a general increase in
awareness when it comes to issues like child marriages and dowry.

The need
Arranged marriages have been around for thousands of years, and were practiced all around the
world at some point. They are when parents predetermine who their child will marry. These two
people often have comparable backgrounds both socially and culturally. This tradition is still
commonly practiced in India, South Asia, and other parts of the world. Now it has begun to raise
controversy. People are beginning to ask questions about the reasoning and motives behind these
arranged marriages. There is certainly a lack of proper perspective as to what people look for, in
arrange marriage. This require an attention so as to know what the youth and importantly the
women, who are considered as the sufferer of the system of arrange marriage think of it.

Objectives
The objectives of the study are-
 To find views on marriage.
 To know preference of type of marriage (love or arrange).
 Reasons for choosing any of the marriage.
 To know what people think of the motives behind arrange marriages.

Research methodology
Research design
The design of a research is a plan or a model that helps researcher to conduct a formal
investigation and survey. It is an application of methods and procedures for acquiring the
information needs for getting a desire out come. It decides the sources of data and methods for
gathering data. A good design insures that the information obtained is relevant to the research
question and that it was collected by objectives. Since, research design is simply the frame work
or plan for a study. It is a blue print that of a house devised by an architect. My approach to
research is descriptive and quite specific.
Out of these all research methods the research method, which was most suitable to my research,
was descriptive research because it provides me all the opportunities to cover the all the aspect
that I require to conduct the research and get an appropriate out come.
Descriptive Research: Descriptive research includes surveys and fact – finding enquires
of different kinds. The major purpose of descriptive research is description of the state of affairs
as it exists at present. In social science and business research we often use the term Ex post facto
research for descriptive research studies. The main characteristic of this method is
that the researcher has no control over the variables; he can only report what has happened or
what is happening.
SAMPLE SIZE
It is true that it is very difficult to do research with whole universe. As we know that it is not
feasible to go with population survey because of the numerous Doctors and their scattered
location. So for this purpose sample size has to be determined well in advanced and selection of
the sample also has to be scientific so that it represents the whole universe. So far as this research
is concerned, the sample size is 85.

SAMPLE UNIT
Respondents who were approached were educated young population.

Data was collected from the city Bikaner (Rajasthan)
MODE OF COLLECTION
As learning is a human activity and is as natural, as breathing. Despite of the fact that learning is
all pervasive in our lives, psychologists do not agree on how learning takes place. How
individuals learn is a matter of interest to marketers. They want to teach consumers in their roles
as their roles as consumers. They want consumers to learn about their products, product
attributes, potential consumers benefit, how to use, maintain or even dispose of the product and
new ways of behaving that will satisfy not only the consumer’s needs, but the marketer’s
objectives. The scope of our study restricts itself to the analysis of consumer preferences,
perception and consumption of Cadbury and Nestle Chocolates. There are many other brands of
chocolates available but my study is limited to two major players of chocolates leaving behind
the others. The scope of my study is also restricts itself to areas. There are 2 sources of data i.e.
A) Primary Data
The data, which are collected for the first time, directly from the respondents to the base of
knowledge & belief of the research, are called primary data. The normal procedure is to
interview some people individually or in a group to get a sense of how people feel about the
topic. So far as this research is concerned, primary data is the main source of information
provided by the respondents by the way of questionnaire send to them.
B) Secondary Data
When the data is collected and compiled in the in a published nature it is called Secondary data.
So far as this research is concerned internet, many brochures, previous project reports, internet
and magazines have been referred too.

Findings and Interpretation
Most the respondents participated are female (68.1%).

Most of the respondents have done or doing graduation (63.8%).
When asked about what people think about arrange marriages most of respondents said that
arrange marriage is okay (42%) that means they neither consider it good nor bad. And a
considerable percentage (33.3%) of people also say that arrange marriages are good.

Most of respondents when asked what they would prefer most of the people preferred arrange
marriage (56.7 %). The choice here done by the respondents and choosing arrange marriage
truly reflects the Indian thinking of youth.
When asked that what would they rate arrange marriage or love marriage in comparison
most of the respondents rated love marriage more in comparison to arrange marriage.

This shows the choices made by respondents in the view that what they think of the fact that
arrange marriages are disappearing in the society. Where most of respondents are not sure “that
arrange marriages are quickly disappearing in today’s society” same percentage of people voted
yes and no.
Most of the respondents thinks parents plays the main role of arrange marriage. And second
highest percentage of respondents say that relatives do the main role of arranging.

Most of the respondents (39.7) thinks parental choice is the reason behind choosing arrange
marriage if they choose it over love marriages. Second reason chosen is “an easy option.”
Most of the people think that parental satisfaction (42%) is the benefit or motive behind arrange
marriage.” Second many respondents thinks long term relationship theories (39.1%) are also one
of the motives behind the arrange marriage.

Most of respondents are not sure i.e. they don’t know (52.2%) that arranges marriages are less
likely to end in divorce than love marriage. While a large number of respondents are there who
believe to this statement.
This question also tries to bring about the view of people; most of the respondents agree to the
fact that arrange marriage become forced relationship if they don’t work. Which means arrange
marriages become a burden on people that they could not be moved from shoulders.

Conclusion
To sum it all up, Arranged marriages are the marriages that are proposed by entire family's
agreement. When comparing them to Love marriages, Arranged marriages cannot in any ways be
taken as a safer option as there have been flaws in both categories of marriage. Arranged
marriages have their own advantages and disadvantages. But at the end of the day it all depends
on how as an individual you think of marriage like in the survey we found out thoughts of
respondents about arrange marriages like ‘Because in it you already know the person whom you
are marrying and you accept that person with all his/her flaws’ ‘Arrange marriage is an
successful one,’’ 100% Continuity,’’ Trust on parents’ choice, more successful for long period.’
As well as thoughts like’ we have our own choice.... N we know that person personally...there is
no issue of comfort n we know each other individually’’ It's better to be killed by someone of
your own choice’’ In love marriage, you already know the other person, you both are compatible,
that's the reason you're still together,’’ Both are horrible and arrange marriage is worst.’ These
thoughts clearly say that we cannot choose any one based on people’s view because arrange
marriage and love marriage both have their advantages and disadvantages which vary according
to the people. And in a country like India which is the perfect example of a society where
arranged marriages are still the norm and where the divorce rate is very low and as well a
country where the western culture is emerging so rapidly no one option is sufficient. Choices of
people differ, their views differ, their situations differ, and their perspective differ it is hard to
analyze their choices. But it would not be wrong to say that still arrange marriage is more
preferred, easy, and most chosen option among the Indians.

Limitations of the study
In attempt to make this project authentic and reliable, every possible aspect of the topic was kept in
mind. Nevertheless, despite of fact constraints were at play during the formulation of this project. The
main limitations are as follows:
Due to limitation of time only few people were selected for the study. So the sample of consumers was
not enough to generalize the findings of the study.
The main source of data for the study was primary data with the help of self-managed questionnaires.
Hence, the chances of unbiased information are less.
Some respondents were there who did not want to fill the questionnaire.
People were hesitant to disclose the true facts.
The chance of biased response can’t be eliminated though all necessary steps were taken to avoid the
same.
