MOTION
INTRODUCTION
WHAT IS MOTION ?
When we talk about motion or rest, it is with reference to
some point known as the origin. So, now with respect to the
change in the position, we have two quantities which can be
used to describe that change in position. They are distance
and displacement.
UNIFORM AND NON UNIFORM
MOTION
 UNIFORM MOTION :- This type of motion is defined as the
motion of an object in which the object travels in a straight
line, and its velocity remains constant along that line as it
covers equal distances in equal intervals of time, irrespective
of the duration of the time.
 NON-UNIFORM MOTION :- This type of motion is defined
as the motion of an object in which the object travels with
varied speed and it does not cover the same distance in
equal time intervals, irrespective of the time interval duration.
GRAPHICAL REPRESANTATION
OF MOTION
 TYPES OF MOTION GRAPHS :- There are Two types of graphs of
motion. These are as follows:-
1. Distance-time graphs
2. Velocity-time graphs
CLASSIFICATION OF DISTANCE AND VELOCITY
TIME GRAPHS
 Distance-time graphs are classified into 2 types. These are as follows:-
1.UNIFORM SPEED AND 2.NON-UNIFORM SPEED
 Velocity-time graphs are classified into 5 types. These are as follows:-
1.UNIFORM MOTION 2.UNIFORM ACCELERATION 3.NON-UNIFORM ACCELERATION
4.UNIFORM RETARDITION 5.NON UNIFORM RETARDITION
DISTANCE-TIME GRAPH
 Distance-time graphs show how far an object has travelled in
a designated period of time. The graph shows distance versus
time and is made up of a simple line graph.
 1. On the Y-axis, the distance is plotted.
 2. On the X-axis, time is plotted.
Distance-time graphs show the speed of a vehicle changing
along curved lines.

 Distance time graph of a body moving with Non-uniform speed
VELOCITY-TIME GRAPH
 A velocity-time graph shows the change in the velocity of
an body in a straight line with respect to time.
 Time is the quantity taken along the x-axis
 Velocity is taken along the y-axis.
 The height of the velocity-time graph does not change
with time for an body moving at a uniform velocity.
VELOCITY TIME-GRAPH FOR
UNIFORM MOTION
 The velocity-time graph for an object in uniform motion will be a
straight line parallel to time axis. It represents that velocity of a body is
constant with time.
VELOCITY TIME-GRAPH FOR
UNIFORM ACCELARATION
 Uniform acceleration is defined as an item traveling in a straight
line with an increase in velocity at equal intervals of time.
VELOCITY TIME GRAPH FOR
NON-UNIFORM ACCLERATION
 An object is said to be with Non uniform acceleration if the velocity of the object
changes by unequal amounts in equal intervals of time.
VELOCITY TIME GRAPH FOR
UNIFORM RETARDATION
 An object is said to be moving with uniform deceleration if it decrease its
velocity by equal amount in equal intervals of time. It is also known as uniform
retardation.
VELOCITY TIME GRAPH FOR
NON-UNIFORM RETARDATION
 Non uniform retardation means when there is deacceleration in
unequal time intervals.
