Armenia-Azerbaijan Conflict - Explained
What's The Issue?
A terrain territory called Nagorno-Karabakh aka
the Republic of Artsakh is at the centerstage of
this conflict.
Armenia, a Christian state, claims hold on the
region that has Christian majority. Azerbaijan
opposes the claim.
The roots of the conflict go back to the times of
USSR and experts blame Joseph Stalin for it.
The similar conflict took place in 1994 and 2006
before this and many people of both sides lost
their lives.
But religion isn't the
only driving force....
Actually it's the least important factor...
Supremacy in the Caucasus region, oil, gas,
strategic interests, and politics are involved in
this war-like conflict.
Azerbaijan's capital Baku has always been
the hub of oil. Now, a new gas pipeline is also
being built that transfers gas to European
Union, which is in dire need of gas.
Russia-backed Turkey opposes this move of
Iran-backed Azerbaijan.
No wonder, Russia and Turkey have emerged
as a two players fighting behind the curtains
in this conflict.
While Moscow supports Armenia, Ankara has
openely asked Armenia to stop it's rhetoric
against Azerbaijan.
What's the Situation Now?
According to reports, Azerbaijan may have
faced huge losses armed & financial front
thanks to its undisciplined military and
obsolete weaponry.
Hundreds of army personnel on both the
sides have lost their lives and the civilian
lives have been impacted significantly.
Armenian army holds a strategic advantage
as they are on top of terrains alongside
border area.
What's the Role of India?
Armenia-India, traditionally, have been friendliest
relationship. Even though New Delhi has nothing
against Azerbaijan, their slant towards Armenia is
visible.
New Delhi has appealed for an immediate
ceasefire between the two nations.
The late External Affairs minister had visited a
famous fire temple in Baku, which was once
worshipped by both Hindus and Zoroastrians.
Azerbaijan is important for New Delhi as the BRI-
like North-South International Transport Corridor
goes from Azerbaijan.
What's Next?
Both Armenia and Azerbaijan have brushed off all the calls of peace coming from
external and internal sources.
It's hard to decode how the things will turn in the coming future. However, the
whole world, including the United Nations, has demanded the ceasefire.
Who's Winning?
War is the science of destruction.
