According to one United Nations estimate, 113 to 200 million women are “demographically missing” from the world today. That is to say, there should be 113 to 200 million more women walking the earth, who aren’t. By that same estimate, 1.5 to 3 million women and girls lose their lives every year because of gender-based neglect or gender-based violence and Sexual Violence in Conflict.
We can point a finger at poverty. But poverty alone does not result in these girls and women’s deaths and suffering; the blame also falls on the social system and attitudes of the societies.
India alone accounts for more than 50 million of the women who are “missing” due to female foeticide - the sex-selective abortion of girls, dowry death, gender-based neglect and all forms of violence against women.
The decline in the sex ratio and the millions of Missing Women are indicators of the feudal patriarchal resurgence. Violence against women has gone public – whether it is dowry murders, the practice of female genital mutilation, honour killings, sex selective abortions or death sentences awarded to young lovers from different communities by caste councils, rapes and killings in communal and caste violence, it is only women’s and human rights groups who are protesting – the public and institutional response to these trends is very minimal. Most of the values are insufficiently imagined and fundamentally flawed.
More than two-thirds of the women’s populations don’t have access to the financial system. Poor women are not considered credit worthy. Every human being should have the “right to credit” because if people have money, they can change their lives. It is true for women. Nearly half the world’s population live in poverty, 70% are women.

LGBTQ Criminalization and Criminal Justice ReformMarvin Webb
This infographic raises awareness about how LGBTQ people are disproportionately represented in the criminal justice system. It notes that biased policing and aggressive sentencing make LGBTQ people more likely to face time in prison, where they often face poor treatment and abuse. It also explores funding for LGBTQ criminalization and criminal justice reform, which, while still small, is growing.

LGBTQ Discrimination

Although many scholars think significant progress has been made in the LGBTQ community, I argue that there is still a lot more work to be done than they realize because of growing trends in anxiety and depression. This is partly due to acceptance and hate and can clearly be seen at home, school, work and in the community.
The LGBTQ community should not have to worry about losing their job or means of support as part of being discriminated. One part of The Equality Act is supposed to protect persons and their sexual orientation just as it is supposed to protect Religion and Belief. Yang (2019) “Title VII of the Civil Rights Act bans employment discrimination “because of [an] individual’s race, color, religion, sex or nation origin.” Sexual orientation and transgender status are not listed as specific protected categories, but no such language is required. The beauty of our nation’s civil rights laws is that they protect everyone-including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people-who faces discrimination based on sex.” With the Equality Act under question, members of the LGBTQ community now fear of losing their jobs or being discriminated in the work place. This is due to the wording for the Policy/Act.
The increase in anxiety and depression from the hate can be unbearable at times. This has been causing an increase in suicide attempts for the transgender and non-binary community. There has been a great number of youth that are now referring to themselves as “non-binary”, which means they do not identify as either male or female. Halliwell (2019) “Almost 30% of transgender women reported attempting suicide. Almost 42% of gender non-binary youth reported attempting suicide in 2018”. This is a public health crisis, with suicide attempt rates 4 times higher than those of straight youth. When you identify as transgender, you normally feel emotional pain due to not being happy with is checked on your birth certificate. Most try to keep their family happy but this normally brings depression and a disconnect. Even still we there are youth coming out at earlier ages than what was seen in the 80s and 90s.
Even though a good number of LGBTQ youth are being accepted, there are some that may not be accepted by their families and will be told to leave. Rhoades (2018) “homelessness among LGBTQ youth specifically is a major public health concern, with estimated rates of past-year homelessness among LGBTQ youth as high as 30–45% and evidence of a clear link between homelessness and poorer mental health for these youth.” The suicide rates for homeless LGBTW youth is 9-20 points higher of ono-LGBTQ homeless youth. These homeless youth also have to find ways of making money, most turn to selling their bodies and this takes a toll on their mental health. There are times where they are taken under the wing of a house “mother or father”. This is an older LGBTQ person who run.

Persuasive Paper Part 1: A Problem Exists
Date: 11/06/2015
A twelve year old kid died while trying to induce an abortion in the neighborhood while three seventeen year olds have been found guilty of robbing a jewelry shop violently. Today, news channels are filled with news that makes you cry if you still have some humanity left. The good morals of yester years have been eroded and what we witness is utterly unbelievable. The society we are leaving in has become more obsessed with material gains in the expense of morality. Youths are on the rampage, doing as they deem suitable while their parents are busy amassing wealth. An article in the New York Times claims that the world we are living in today is 20 times more dangerous than it was 100 years ago and I totally agree with the writer. Social order and responsibility will be non existent in the next generation if tough measures are not taken today to curb the already volatile situation.
The society has gradually with time eroded its social values that once held the community united. Social degradation can be traced back to the time when humans became obsessed with social status and commodity fetishism. Today the individuals are less concerned with the wellbeing of their neighbors and the environment. Parents are busy advancing their careers and businesses while the children are left at the mercy of house helps and the media. These kids end up being drug addicts, sexually immoral and with no respect at all because they had no one to guide them properly during their formative years to be responsible and develop good morals. Issues that the society ought to address now are; drug abuse, sexual immorality and the escalating crime rate especially among the youth.
The crime rate in the world has increased considerably over the last decade thanks to the hard economic times and unemployment. Gender related murders, burglaries, battery and robbery with violence are reported daily in our news. Police are involved in gun fights with criminals almost on a daily basis. Humans value property possessions than life these days and can kill, maim or threaten anyone so long as they get to take something of value from you. Countries with less income per head and high unemployment rates are the most affected. A survey by the United Nations indicates that developing countries and less developed neighborhoods are the most dangerous places to live in. this is because individuals living in this places feel left out by the government and therefore they engage in criminals activities in order to be felt and recognized. Youth are the majority of these perpetrators of crimes mostly because they have no jobs and are a frustrated lot.
The second social issue the society is facing is drug abuse and addiction especially amongst the youth. Youth are wasting away their lives by taking drugs that are harmful making them unproductive and dependent. Alcohol, tobacco, cocaine, LSDs and marijuana are the mos.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
