MAKING BLACK LIVES MATTER
CAMPAIGN THEME
• We plan to bring awareness about the injustice many young black people
face in regards to police brutality and systematic killings in America over the
past couple of years. Through our work we plan to give those in the UK an
understanding of the long-term, devastating effects the actions of the police
can have on the community and rebuild the trust between the police force
and the public.
• Journalists must get involved to help uncover the truths behind this and must
use their power and influence to act as a voice to those who want to be
heard. Journalists are a tool for change, and the mistreatment of black
people must come to an end.
WHY ‘BLACK LIVES MATTER?’
• Black Lives Matter is an extremely important cause as essentially though all lives
matter, those that are being targeted deserve a voice and chance in life. If the issue
is overlooked it could result in becoming an international problem between ethnic
minorities and police in other countries which is a terrifying prospect.
• There has been a significant change in the way the public perceive the police force
in recent years. Connotations of the job role of the police suggest they are
untrustworthy, calculated, impulsive and threatening. Ultimately, if we can not trust
those put in positions to serve and protect, who can the community trust?
CASE STUDIES
• The Killing Of Mike Brown
• The shooting of Michael Brown occurred on August 9, 2014, in Ferguson, Missouri.
Brown, an 18-year-old black man, was fatally shot by Darren West, 28, a white Ferguson
police officer. The disputed circumstances of the shooting of the unarmed man sparked
existing tensions in the predominantly black city, and protests and civil unrest erupted.
• Sandra Bland Case
• Sandra Bland was a 28-year-old black woman who was found hanged in a jail cell in
Texas, on July 13, 2015. Her death was classified as a suicide by the county coroner, and
was followed by protests against her arrest, disputing the cause of death, and alleging
racial violence against her.
TRAYVON MARTIN
Trayvon Benjamin Martin was a 17-year-old
African American from Florida, shot by
George Zimmerman, a neighbourhood watch
On the evening of February 26, Martin went to
a convenience store and purchased candy
and a canned drink. As Martin returned from
the store, he walked through a neighborhood
that had been victimized by robberies several
times that year. Zimmerman, a member of the
community watch, spotted him and called the
Sanford Police to report him for suspicious
behavior. Moments later, there was an
altercation between the two individuals in
which Martin was shot in the chest.
Following Martin's death, rallies, marches
and protests were held across the nation.
MARK DUGGAN (UK RIOTS)
• Mark Duggan, a 29-year-old tottenham resident, was shot and killed by police in
Tottenham, North London, England, on 4 August 2011. The police stated that officers were
attempting to arrest Duggan on suspicion of planning an attack, and that he was in
possession of a handgun. Duggan died from a gunshot wound to the chest. The
circumstances of Duggan's killing resulted in public protests in Tottenham, where youths
used violence to make a stand.
Breakdown of deaths from black and minority ethnic (BAME)
communities in custody or following other police contact and as the
result of police shootings in England and Wales by year since 1993.

MAKING THE DIFFERENCE
• We plan to have a campaign based in the UK, to help support the movement and stress the
importance that every life matters and every little helps.
• We want to see how the public perceive the police and how they feel about young people
growing up in their communities.
• Ultimately, injustice in the world needs to be combated for the future of our generations to
come and stands such as the Mark Duggan case do not arise. It is important that we make
a change and do it the right way
• There needs to be discussions into:
• Police force wearing body cameras
• Differentiating where and when violence needs to be used
• Not shooting to kill– Guns should be used to disable the person if they are being violent and
not to take their life.
• Building trust between community and police
• Getting justice for those slain and ensuring the police get repercussions for their actions
