Formal Arabic ("Fusha") is used for reading, writing, media and politics across Arab nations, while informal dialects vary between places and are used for everyday speaking. It recommends informal Arabic to become conversationally fluent and make friends, while formal Arabic is needed for reading, understanding media/politics, and more formal jobs. The class will offer both weekly formal and informal sessions at different times and locations for £1.50 per session or £6 for 4 classes in one track, and £12 for both tracks.

If you are learning Arabic and thinking you can speak it in all Arab countries then let us tell you it’s not the Arabic language that unites the Arab community. They are unable to understand each other because every Arab nation has its own spoken dialect. They all have the same roots and issues from the pure classical Arabic used in Quran, but a lot different in vocabulary and pronunciation.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2. One of the first decisions learners are faced with is which type of
Arabic to learn.
This can give you flexibility or confusion…
Keep up with me to make your choice. Ask
questions throughout that’s fine
3. { {Formal Arabic or “Fusha”
Mainly to READ & WRITE, understand
and participate in politics or media
Common form between ALL Arab nations.
A language form that will make
communication between all Arabic-
speaking people possible.
It is not a conversational language. Not
used in day-to-day affairs.
CAN help to speak to Arabic speakers, but
not really what they use to speak.
Used in formal settings; news broadcasts,
newsletters, books, print media, political
speeches
TV Programmes & Music
Informal Arabic or Dialect
Mainly to SPEAK (oral)
Dialects change from one Arab
nation to another.
How people speak to each
other...everyday
Used for texting too
Social media
TV Programmes & Music
what do YOU want?
4.
5. Depends what YOUR goals are…
SPEAK
If it’s to become conversationally fluent
in Arabic then you should go for the
informal/dialect option.
If you plan to make friends, buy things
and haggle, travel, attempt to blend in
and not get ripped off, watch a lot of TV
such as comedy or soap operas, and
even work in most jobs.
SO, more casual.
READ & WRITE & UNDERSTAND
Understand the media or watching
the news
Practice politics or understand
politics
Reading and understanding
religious texts
An academic language
It is essential if you want to read
anything (apart from emails and
text messages)
You would need this for more
formal jobs and more formal
emails.
SO, more formal.
6. Anyone with the desire to learn Arabic, can do it.
Whatever you choose, it is all part of the same broad, diverse, Arabic
language.
300 million people around the world are proud to speak it. Make it
300 million and 1 ;)
In the past 15 years or so, there has been an explosion in the number
of people learning or interested in learning Arabic.
There’s SO much variety of sources to learn Arabic. From school/uni
classes, online, audio, books etc.
Don’t worry though, you don’t need to look into these cause you have
us to teach you. BUT you can extend yourself by using such sources.
We will be providing some for those interested throughout our
classes.
They say the best way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in a
country that speaks it. That can come on a later stage for you
7. Fun facts to end with
The Arabic language has contributed a lot of words to the English language
like:
Cotton [koton] - قطن
Sugar [succar] - سكر
Gazelle [ghazal] - غزال
Alcohol [alcoo’hool] - الكحول
Guitar [qithara] - قيثارة
Sahara [sahra’a] - صحراء
Lemon [laymoon] - ليمون
Carat [qeerat] - قيراط
The Arabic language is written right to left and the front of an
Arabic book is what would be considered the back by most
western languages.
“5th most spoken
language in the world”
8. Future Classes
- Will be adapted to your expectations throughout the
term.
- Engaging, interactive, funny, captivating.
- Different platforms: movies, videos, music too
10. Decision for Classes
There will be BOTH weekly formal and weekly informal sessions starting next week
FORMAL on TUESDAYS 6 PM – 7 PM
INFORMAL on WEDNESDAYS 6 PM – 7 PM
LOCATIONS: to be confirmed…
11. Class Pricing
£1.50 per session.
However, sign ups are 4 classes in advance for either formal or
informal.
SO, total would be: £6 for 4 classes (1 class per week, whether
formal or informal)
If you were to take BOTH formal and informal classes, that
would be a total of: £12 for 8 classes.
Editor's Notes
When native Arabic speakers from two different countries speak to one another, what often happens when there's a communication barrier is one of them will adapt his or her dialect to the dialect of the other speaker. For example, in Egypt when Egyptians encounter Syrians, Yemenis and Iraqis, those people 'Egyptianize' their speech somewhat just for flow of conversation. Or the other way around. What you don't see however are people walking around speaking formal Arabic to one another as a bridge language. However, if you’re a beginner and you choose to learn formal Arabic, Arabic speakers will understand you and reply to you accordingly.
