Paul finds himself trapped in no man's land between trenches after bombs hit nearby. He is suffering from thirst but knows the water in the puddles could make him sick. He then hears voices in the distance and must decide whether to call out for assistance or stay silent, unsure of whether the voices belong to friends or enemies.
