A summary of my group's work in using crowdsourcing techniques and wisdom of crowds to improve privacy and security. I talked about some techniques to improve crowdsourcing for anti-phishing, some ways of using lots of location data to infer location privacy preferences, and some of our early work on using crowdsourcing to understand privacy preferences regarding smartphone apps.

Financial auditors routinely search internal as well as public knowledge bases as part of the auditing process. Efficient search strategies are crucial for knowledge workers in general and for auditors in particular. Modern search technology quickly evolves; and features beyond keyword search like facetted search or visual overview of knowledge bases like graph visualisations emerge. It is therefore desirable for auditors to learn about new innovations and to explore and experiment with such technologies. In this paper, we present a reflection intervention concept that intends to nudge auditors to reflect on their search behaviour and to trigger informal learning in terms of by trying out new or less frequently used search features. The reflection intervention concept has been tested in a focus group with six auditors using a mockup. Foremost, the discussion centred on the timing of reflection interventions and how to raise mo-tivation to achieve a change in search behaviour.

Influence of Timeline and Named-entity Components on User Engagement Roi Blanco
Nowadays, successful applications are those which contain features that captivate and engage users. Using an interactive news retrieval system as a use case, in this paper we study the effect of timeline and named-entity components on user engagement. This is in contrast with previous studies where the importance of these components were studied from a retrieval effectiveness point of view. Our experimental results show significant improvements in user engagement when named-entity and timeline components were installed. Further, we investigate if we can predict user-centred metrics through user's interaction with the system. Results show that we can successfully learn a model that predicts all dimensions of user engagement and whether users will like the system or not. These findings might steer systems that apply a more personalised user experience, tailored to the user's preferences.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Also, notice most of the performance boost is at low levels of recall. so if you want to build a high-precision classifier this is the best approach. Really there are two stories here. first it's that the intensity features do not really provide much of a gain over just looking at the number of locations, especially at high recall levels. Second, is that location based features significantly improves performance. This validates that these are clearly good things to look at when you're analyzing this kind of data
