When you teach in class, how do you know who is confused, who is bored, who hasn’t even bothered to attend, and perhaps more importantly, who has learnt anything? This session will introduce the next generation of classroom technologies and reveal how they are impacting on engagement and learning. The approach offers a flexible pedagogical platform for instructors to extend their teaching and training, whilst providing timely feedback on how learners are progressing. By also including powerful engagement metrics to capture learning interactions, instructors and senior managers can analyse the effectiveness of teaching formats, of class engagement, and individual learner behaviours. Pedagogical studies confirm that this can have a significant impact on critical learning outcomes, such as early warning of student failure (Freeman et al, 2014; Samson, 2016), and boosting retention (HEC, 2016), while also increasing learning gain and exam scores (Montpetit, 2016). Students also value their ability to control the pace, place and mode of their learning (Gosper et al, 2009; Leadbeater et al, 2012; White, 2016), whilst receiving more immediate feedback on their progress (JISC, 2016). Moving to ‘learning capture’ mindset thus offers new opportunities for educators to empower learners before, during and after class.

When you teach in class, how do you know who is confused, who is bored, who hasn’t even bothered to attend, and perhaps more importantly, who has learnt anything? This session will introduce the next generation of classroom technologies and reveal how they are impacting on engagement and learning. The approach offers a flexible pedagogical platform for instructors to extend their teaching and training, whilst providing timely feedback on how learners are progressing. By also including powerful engagement metrics to capture learning interactions, instructors and senior managers can analyse the effectiveness of teaching formats, of class engagement, and individual learner behaviours. Pedagogical studies confirm that this can have a significant impact on critical learning outcomes, such as early warning of student failure (Freeman et al, 2014; Samson, 2016), and boosting retention (HEC, 2016), while also increasing learning gain and exam scores (Montpetit, 2016). Students also value their ability to control the pace, place and mode of their learning (Gosper et al, 2009; Leadbeater et al, 2012; White, 2016), whilst receiving more immediate feedback on their progress (JISC, 2016). Moving to ‘learning capture’ mindset thus offers new opportunities for educators to empower learners before, during and after class.
eFolio and Innovation
The document discusses the author's approach to innovation over 50 years. It provides an example of innovating e-portfolios by developing an externally hosted portfolio application called eFolio that is portable, can transition with the user between schools and institutions, and can remain with the user for life. The author found existing e-portfolio solutions limited and developed eFolio by combining features like remote access, customization for different ages, and longevity of use into a single solution.
Using ipad

Integrating iPads into the special ed classroom

OU has gone through multiple iterations of their App to address these new exceptions including a price increase on software and licensing and support.

Ripple is an open source, mobile web application developed by the University of Oregon Libraries that allows presenters to survey audience members in real time through their mobile devices. It was designed using user centered principles to be lightweight, customizable through plugins, and accessible across different mobile platforms in order to enhance instruction and audience interaction without significant financial costs. Key features of Ripple include different question types, chat functionality, and generation of response reports.
iCame, iSaw, iConquered: Introducing Faculty to the iPad, One Step at a Time
When University of Hartford faculty started using iPads, questions arose regarding how to make best use of the device in their teaching. Our approach was to focus on the iPad's functionality as a first step toward exploring best practices. This session will provide attendees with a faculty development framework for supporting tablet initiatives. Participants will be able to evaluate some of the key concerns of faculty iPad users and identify approaches for addressing these concerns.

A walk through the many methods being used in the university's Health faculty to make teaching and learning richer by using iPads and apps. Robin was accompanied by staff (Melanie Lindley, Mandy Braisford and Dave Ridley) and students (Lizzie May and Ryan Morton) who talked about their many experiences of using this technology and their ideas for the future.
Synthesis mobile technology
Aaron took an online survey that assessed his learning preferences as active, sensing, visual, and sequential. He found the activities in his mobile technology class, especially using apps on his iPhone, helped him learn effectively by engaging his strong visual and active learning preferences. He believes mobile technologies like iPods are especially useful for integrating social media and apps to support studying. Aaron plans to continue using his iPhone and apps to support his learning in future accounting classes.

Teacher training my brainshark - 6 further ideas and review
