Applications of Computers
By: Tufail Khan
Applications of Computers
• Computers are being used in the following fields of
our day-to-day life.
• Home
• Small Business
• Industry
• Health Care
• Government
• Education
Homes
• In many homes, the family computer is considered
nearly as important as the refrigerator or the
washing machine.
• People can’t imagine living without it.
• In fact, many families have multiple PCs in their
homes and some of them has an Internet
connection.
• Home users need computers for the following
purposes.
Contd…
• Communication: Home computers are mostly
used for Electronic Mail (E-mail) because emails
allow family members to communicate with one
another and to say in contact with friends and
coworkers.
• Business Work Done at Home: Now-a-days it is
possible for many users to connect to their
employer’s network from home and do work that
could not be done during regular business hours.
Contd…
• Schoolwork: Today’s students are increasingly
reliant on computers.
• The Internet is replacing printed books and easy-
to-use software make it possible for even young
users to create stylish documents.
• Entertainment: A computer can be used for
playing games and for this reason the computer has
replaced the TV as the entertainment medium for
many people.
Small Business
• Many of today’s successful small companies
simply could not exist without computer
technology.
• Each year, hundreds of thousands of individuals
launch businesses based from their homes or in
small office locations.
Industry
• Today business organizations use different kinds of
computers in many combinations.
• Here are just a few ways computers are applied to
industry.
• Design: Nearly any company that designs and
makes products uses a computer-aided design or
computer-aided manufacturing system in their
creation.
Contd…
• Shipping: Freight (goods but not passengers)
companies need computers to manage the
thousands of ships, planes, trains and trucks that
are moving goods at any given moment.
• In addition to tracking vehicle locations and
contents, computers can manage drivers schedule,
invoices and billing, and many other activities.
Healthcare
• Healthcare means the set of services provided by a
country or an organization for the treatment of the
physically and the mentally ill people.
• Computers are making healthcare more efficient
and accurate while helping providers bring down
cost.
• Computers are involved in Ultrasound, magnetic
resonance imaging and laser eye surgery.
• Surgeons now can use robotic surgical devices to
perform delicate operations
Contd…
• Clinics and hospitals use computers to maintain
patient records and perform billing.
Government
• Today, computers play a crucial part in nearly
every government agency.
• Police: Police force consider computers as to be
just as important as guns and ammunition. Today’s
police cruisers are equipped with laptop computers
and wireless Internet connection that enable
officers to search for information on criminals,
crime scenes etc.
• Military: Military uses computers for calculating
the trajectory of missiles.
Contd…
• Apart from that, computer are being used for
payroll management and weapon control.
• Income Tax department: The Federal Board of
Revenue cannot imagine to calculate tax bills with
the help of computers. In fact, the FBR now
encourages taxpayers to file their tax returns
online, via Internet.
Education
• Computer technology has a deep impact on
education sector.
• Because of computers, imparting education has
become easier and much more interesting than
before.
• Computer facilitates audio-visual representation of
information, thus making the process of learning
more interesting.
• Teachers hardly use chalk and board today.
Contd…
• They bring presentation on a flash drive, plug it to
a computer in the class room, and teaching begins.
• Today, because of computers, students can learn at
a distance.
• Distance learning programs provides education at
much affordable costs.
