Impact of
Technology on
Government &
Commercial
Businesses
Government:
Developments in information technology has helped governments to improve
their “service” to their citizens.
• Advances in Database technology for example have enabled the governments
of various countries to collate
and monitor statistical information that they can use to combat fraud, manage
the economy in a more
informed way.
• Information Technology has also had a major impact on the defense
capabilities of governments.
• Encryption of sensitive information has enabled governments to obtain added
security.
• Digital India Campaign by Govt. of India is helping in providing information
technology uses in every corner
of the country.
Commercial Businesses:
• Able to extract information as to what the customer really wants.
• To monitor a businesses performance can also enable the business to
highlight areas where they are not
making the most use of their resources.
• Increase the businesses income through advertising in the various available
forums.
Impact of Technology
on Educational
Institutions
• The processes by which educational establishments
distribute information have become increasingly
diverse, and the effectiveness of the process has also
improved.
• Enabled researchers to access a wider source of
information than previously available through such
technologies as the Internet (the original ARPAnet
being set up primarily to assist research).
• The Internet and other related technologies such as
electronic mail, also enable collaborative projects to
be undertaken between geographically distant
groups.
Impact of Technology on Work
Improves Communication
• Many businesses are using various business communication technologies to change the way
their employees interact and communicate while at work.
• For example, employees from different departments in a company can use text messaging
services or video conferencing tools like Skype to share and exchange information.
• Project sharing globally from anywhere and everywhere.
Encourages Innovation and Creativity
• Many companies create technological challenges and reward employees who come up with
creative ideas using technology.
• Social enterprise networks like Yammer.com can be used by employees to socialize and
interact with other creative employees from different organizations, this interaction will result
into information exchange and it also encourages brainstorming on various work related
issues.
Improves on Human Resource
Management
• It improves on the process of screening, recruiting and hiring new employees.
• Technology can also be used to track performance and productivity of each
employee at
work
Creates Mobility
• Employees can work from anywhere at anytime, this mobility makes employees stay
in
control of their jobs.
• Technological tools like virtual meeting applications save us time, we don’t have to
be in
meetings physically yet information and data will be shared in real-time. E.g., GOTO
meeting tools are used by many companies.
Impact of
Technology
on Heath
Care
Time saver Better data
coordination and
management
More non-invasive
procedures.
Minimally invasive

Impact of
Technology on
Communication
(1/3)
From Business Perspective
Easy Product Launch:
• In Past, A company had to pay for expensive door to door marketing which
could even take a lot of time to
yield results.
• In Present, The company will draft one email with details about a new service
or product and that message
will be delivered to all consumers in a minute.
• A good example is “MailChimp” . With their massive mail submission, all your
clients will receive the same
message in a minute via email.
Product or service surveys:
• In Past It was so difficult to conduct a survey, most companies would pay
money to magazines and place
survey forms and offer gifts to users who filled those surveys and mailed them
back to the company.
• Nowadays, a business can conduct a survey using social networks and
provide users with incentives like
‘’gift cards’’. This produces a quick response and saves the company money and
time.
Impact of Technology on Communication (2/3)
Social interaction with consumers
• With the recent invention of social networks like Facebook and twitter, a business can create business pages
then get followers for these pages.
• ‘’Nordstrom’’ this is one of the largest fashion retail businesses in America. Nordstrom used its Facebook
page to update followers about new items and discounts. As of today, its Facebook page has
over 1,667,162 likes. See page facebook.com/Nordstrom
Teleconferencing
• Teleconferencing can save substantial amounts of money otherwise spent on travel by connecting
important employees in far-flung branches together to share ideas and information.
• New technology enables your boss to be in the business meeting while in a hotel in Hawaii preparing for a
partnership or investors meeting.
Impact of
Technology on
Communication
(3/3)
SOME FACTS
• 2,296,365,625 people use the internet in the
world today.
• 2.2 billion number of email users worldwide.
• 144 billion total email traffic per day
worldwide.
Emerging Artificial
Intelligence
Brain Chips
• A chip in the Brain gate system is of 100 hair thin
electrodes.
• It senses electromagnetic signature of Neutrons.
• The Brain chip provides fast and reliable connection
between the brain of a severely disabled person and
personal computer
Applications:
• Navigate Internet.
• Play Computer Games.
• Turn Lights On and Off.
• ControlTelevision.
• Control Robotic Arm.
Quantum Computing
• Quantum computers could spur the development of new
breakthroughs in science, medications to save lives, machine
learning methods to diagnose illnesses sooner, materials to make
more efficient devices and structures etc.
• We experience the benefits of classical computing every day.
However, there are challenges that today’s systems will never be
able to solve. For problems above a certain size and complexity,
we don’t have enough computational power on Earth to tackle
them.
• To stand a chance at solving some of these problems, we need a
new kind of computing i.e. Quantum Computing. The basic
principle behind quantum computation is that quantum properties
can be used to represent data and perform operations on it..
• In simple, Quantum computing is an area of computing focused on
developing computer technology based on the principles of
quantum theory, which explains the behavior of energy and
material on the atomic and subatomic levels.
Robotic Process
Automation or RPA
• Like AI and Machine Learning, Robotic Process Automation,
or RPA, is another technology that is automating jobs. RPA
is the use of software to automate business processes such
as interpreting applications, processing transactions,
dealing with data, and even replying to emails.
• RPA automates repetitive tasks that people used to do.
These are not just the menial tasks of a low-paid worker
but up to 45 percent of the activities we do can be
automated, including the work of financial managers,
doctors, and CEOs.
• Although Forrester Research estimates RPA automation
will threaten the livelihood of 230 million or more knowledge
workers or approximately 9 percent of the global workforce,
RPA is also creating new jobs while altering existing jobs.
Technology shaping our
children’s interests
• Technology determines what is current, what is “old”,
and ultimately, what our children are interested in
(“Will Technology Destroy Mankind”, 2007).
• Children feel pressured by others to have the latest
piece of technology, and not to be caught having a
dated cell phone or MP3 player.
• Many cases of bullying can result from issues
surrounding technology. For example, a student being
bulled for his interest in a certain video game.
Technology
Destroying our
Environment
• It’s no question that mankind’s interest in advancing
technology has had its effects on our environment.
• Our precious vehicles that we rely on each day, are
polluting the air we breathe, destroying our much-
needed ozone layer, and putting millions of toxic
chemicals into our environment, affecting humans,
animals, plants, and all living things on our planet
(Gallicia,2011).
Technology is
stealing our jobs
• With one of the most significant financial depressions occurring recently
in the United States, it’s apparent that jobs are quickly disappearing from
people of society.
• Why? One of the largest contributors to the loss of jobs in North America,
is due to the increase in technology.
• People are losing their jobs to machines, as machines are a more
economically viable solution for large companies, as people cost more to
employ than machines, who basically do the same work (Boyle, 2010).
• For example, Service Jobs, like cashiers, are being fired due to the
installation of self-serve cash register machines that do not require an
attendant.
Technology
affecting
literacy skills
• Along the same lines, the use of the cell phone is
certainly, affecting current and future
population’s literacy skills.
• “By 2008, over 4 trillion text messages were
being sent every year” (Holloway, n.d.).
• People begin to apply their “text messaging
slang” (ex. cut for because, or wat instead of
what) to their everyday lives, effectively ruining
their spelling skills (Holloway, n.d.).
Technology
Ruining Social
Attraction
• The day the cell phone was introduced to the
public was the day people stopped visiting their
parents, siblings, and friends, as they now could
call them on their personal phone instead.
• Currently, people prefer to text their friends than
call them on their phones.
• People are spending more time on social media
websites than they are interacting with other
people (Tate, 2011).
