Road traffic accidents and ocular traumaRene Garcia
This document summarizes a two-year study of ocular trauma caused by road traffic accidents in patients attending or referred to the Tripoli Eye Hospital in Libya. Most accidents were due to collisions between vehicles, often during overtaking or at intersections. Injuries included lacerations from glass shards, globe ruptures, and blunt trauma from impact with vehicle interiors. The authors recommend preventative measures like compulsory seatbelt use, laminated windshields, child restraints, public education on traffic safety, and improved road markings.
Back and coccyx injuries from trip and fallRene Garcia
A woman tripped and fell on broken concrete at the entrance of her workplace, fracturing her coccyx and herniating a disc in her back. She was unable to return to work due to pain and was determined disabled. A jury found the building owners negligent and responsible for her injuries, awarding her $80,000 for future medical expenses but nothing for pain and suffering. An appeals court then reduced a second jury's $2.2 million pain and suffering award to $1.15 million, upholding other damages. Though reduced, the pain and suffering award was still significant for these types of orthopedic injuries without surgery.
Worker's compensation provides medical care, lost wages, and rehabilitation benefits to workers injured on the job. When injuries result in death, the worker's family may receive benefits. Seriously injured workers may need an attorney to ensure they receive full benefits and prevent early termination of benefits. Certain classes of workers have additional protections under special federal statutes for injuries sustained during their employment. An injured worker should consult a lawyer if denied benefits, told to return to work before fully recovered, or denied extended disability benefits despite significant injury.
Reflex sympathetic dystrophy, what is itRene Garcia
Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) is a progressive disease of the autonomic nervous system that is caused by an injury, even a minor one. It involves the nerves, skin, muscles, blood vessels and bones near the site of injury. Instead of healing normally, the injury site experiences worsening pain, burning sensations, swelling, discoloration and muscle spasms. RSD has the highest rating on the McGill Pain Index and can spread throughout the body. Symptoms also include insomnia, emotional disturbances and depression from the constant, chronic pain. While there is no cure, the best treatment involves keeping pain levels under control through the use of opiates and staying as active as possible.
A man became paralyzed from a diving accident and was transferred to a nursing home where he developed severe pressure ulcers due to negligent care. He sued the nursing home and was awarded $750,000 in damages for pain and suffering by a jury. The appellate court affirmed the verdict, noting the man's injuries included a large Stage IV ulcer, debridement procedures, continuing pain, and increased risk of future ulcers.
Delayed diagnosis of spinal tumor results in $Rene Garcia
A woman sued multiple doctors for medical malpractice claiming they failed to properly diagnose a spinal tumor. At trial, a jury found the doctors collectively 30% responsible and awarded the woman $49.75 million in damages. One doctor appealed arguing lack of causation and excessive damages. Experts believe the appellate court will significantly reduce the pain and suffering award, as largest awards usually involve paraplegia or quadriplegia, unlike the woman's injuries. The case remains ongoing with issues of causation, damages period, insurance coverage, and attorneys' fees still to be resolved.
Biography of christopher reeves part iiRene Garcia
After becoming paralyzed in a horse riding accident, Christopher Reeve dedicated himself to raising awareness of spinal cord injuries and advocating for increased research funding. Though confined to a wheelchair and dependent on a ventilator, Reeve traveled extensively giving speeches and helped raise over $60 million for research. He co-founded the Christopher Reeve Foundation to support quality of life programs for the disabled. Reeve approached his injury and advocacy with determination and optimism, inspiring many with his perseverance.
Paralysis is caused by spinal cord injury which breaks the connection between the brain and parts of the body. There are two main types: paraplegia which affects the legs and quadriplegia which affects the arms and legs. Most injuries are in young men caused by car accidents or violence. While research has shown promise healing injuries in rats, there is currently no cure for human paralysis.

A 21-year-old medical assistant underwent surgery to remove a salivary gland stone and was left with a severe TMJ injury, which she claimed was caused by the anesthesiologist hyperextending her jaw during intubation. She sued the doctor and hospital, and was awarded $750,000 in pain and suffering damages by a jury. The appellate court affirmed the verdict and damages award. Due to her TMJ injury, the woman had to wear a mouth guard at all times, could not open her mouth more than 15 millimeters without pain, eat without pain, or kiss her husband normally.
Nightmares are more common after a traumatic event like an accident. Simple techniques like reassurance, rescripting the dream narrative to imagine new outcomes, rehearsing the new version, and resolving the underlying issues can help reduce nightmares. Seeking help may be needed if nightmares are very frequent, graphic or don't change, as they could be caused by medical issues or signify unresolved psychological conflicts requiring treatment.
Facial trauma refers to any physical injury to the face and can involve soft tissue damage like lacerations or burns as well as fractures of facial bones. Treatment depends on the type of injury but may include bandaging wounds, setting broken bones, antibiotics, and sometimes surgery. Facial injuries can cause disfigurement, disability, or loss of function like blindness or jaw issues. While usually not life-threatening on their own, facial trauma can interfere with breathing and cause dangerous complications.
A spinal disc herniation occurs when a tear in the outer ring of an intervertebral disc allows the soft central portion to bulge out. Most herniations occur in the lumbar region and cause pain that may radiate into the legs. Diagnosis is made based on symptoms and physical exam, and may include imaging tests. While minor herniations may heal on their own, severe or persistent cases sometimes require surgery.
New no fault regulations to take effect april 1Rene Garcia
The new no-fault regulations in New York that take effect on April 1st aim to:
1) Prevent insurers from having to pay for medical services that were not actually provided or pay more than the established fee schedule.
2) Require healthcare providers to respond to insurers' requests for medical necessity verification within 120 days or provide justification for not doing so, to speed up the claims process.
3) Specify that technical defects in insurers' denial of claims or verification requests will not invalidate them, to reduce unnecessary litigation.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when an external force injures the brain and can range from mild to severe. It is a major cause of death and disability worldwide, especially in young people, due to causes like falls, vehicle accidents, and violence. TBI can cause physical, cognitive, and behavioral effects that require treatment such as medications, surgery, and rehabilitation therapy. Outcomes depend on the severity of the injury and range from full recovery to permanent disability or death.
Hand surgery encompasses a broad range of procedures to restore function and appearance of the hand following trauma, infections, congenital deformities, or rheumatic changes. Common types of hand surgery include skin grafts, tendon repairs, nerve repairs, and joint replacements. Risks of hand surgery depend on the procedure but can include infection, incomplete healing, loss of movement or feeling.
Occupational asthma (OA) is a form of asthma caused by inhalation of allergens or irritants in the workplace. There are two main mechanisms for OA - immunologic sensitization which occurs after prolonged exposure to workplace allergens, and exposure to high levels of irritants with little latency period. Diagnosis is based on a history of asthma symptoms in the workplace and pulmonary function tests showing obstruction. Prevention focuses on educating workers and managers about risks to allow early identification of affected individuals.

Overall life span (LS) was 1671.7±1721.6 days and cumulative 5YS reached 62.4%, 10 years – 50.4%, 20 years – 44.6%. 94 LCP lived more than 5 years without cancer (LS=2958.6±1723.6 days), 22 – more than 10 years (LS=5571±1841.8 days). 67 LCP died because of LC (LS=471.9±344 days). AT significantly improved 5YS (68% vs. 53.7%) (P=0.028 by log-rank test). Cox modeling displayed that 5YS of LCP significantly depended on: N0-N12, T3-4, blood cell circuit, cell ratio factors (ratio between cancer cells-CC and blood cells subpopulations), LC cell dynamics, recalcification time, heparin tolerance, prothrombin index, protein, AT, procedure type (P=0.000-0.031). Neural networks, genetic algorithm selection and bootstrap simulation revealed relationships between 5YS and N0-12 (rank=1), thrombocytes/CC (rank=2), segmented neutrophils/CC (3), eosinophils/CC (4), erythrocytes/CC (5), healthy cells/CC (6), lymphocytes/CC (7), stick neutrophils/CC (8), leucocytes/CC (9), monocytes/CC (10). Correct prediction of 5YS was 100% by neural networks computing (error=0.000; area under ROC curve=1.0).

2. By John Hochfelder on September 24, 2012 Posted in Ankle Injuries
On December 27, 2002, Massoud Micky, then 47 years old, was walking to
the subway in the Bronx, on his way to work, when he fell stepping onto a
sidewalk sustaining a severe ankle fracture that he ultimately claimed was
caused when his foot was caught in a large gap that created an uneven,
misaligned and broken sidewalk curb.
In his ensuing lawsuit against the City of New York, Micky had to prove that
the city had prior notice of the sidewalk defect. He showed the jury a map
created by the Big Apple Pothole and Sidewalk Protection Committee that
identified as defective the area where Mr. Micky fell. Since the map had
been provided to the city long before the accident, the jurors found the city
liable.
Micky was awarded pain and suffering damages in the sum of $750,000
($250,000 past – 8 years, $500,000 future – 21 years).
The city appealed, arguing both that there was no liability (plaintiff had
originally stated he fell due to snow and ice, not because of any defect) and
that the damages award was excessive.
3. In Micky v. City of New York (1st Dept. 2012), the liability verdict against
the city was affirmed but the damages award was reduced to $250,000
($100,000 past, $150,000 future).
4. Here are the details of plaintiff’s injuries:
comminuted bimalleolar ankle fracture
open reduction internal fixation surgery with insertion of metal plate and
screw
three day hospitalization, casted one month, physical therapy for five weeks
(after which plaintiff never had any more medical treatment for this injury)
unable to return to work (machine operator) for three months (working as
security guard at time of trial)
post-traumatic arthritis (that plaintiff’s expert said is progressive, permanent
and will likely require future surgery)
continuing pain, significant range of motion loss, antalgic gait (limp) and
inability to resume previously very active recreational soccer
5. The appellate court judges based their very significant damage award
reduction on case precedent. Without discussion, the decision merely
mentions four prior cases, each dealing with ankle fractures.
