Using Best Practices to Build Your Production Battle Plan-APMP 2011-Briana Co...Lohfeld Consulting Group
Contractors fight many battles during the war to win business with the Government, from capture management and solutioning to finding key personnel. You can win all of these battles but still lose the war if you do not succeed on the final task—producing and delivering the bid! This session provides sound guidance for developing your own production battle plan. We’ll take you through the BD life cycle and discuss how to incorporate production into each phase. Using war stories from the industry’s leading editors, desktop publishers, graphic artists, and printing companies, we’ll discuss best practices. Specifically, we will define production elements (it’s more than just hitting print), discuss how to budget (time and money) for production and when to start, identify key skills of the best production staffs, and begin contingency planning. You will leave with a comprehensive production checklist to help you develop your own winning production battle plan for your next bid.
A war council is held to decide on a course of action when matters of great importance must be decided, consensus must be reached, or when a leader is unsure of his position. In capture and proposal efforts, teams battle to gain insight into opportunities. Gate reviews should be treated as war councils that examine critical decisions and build information from one review to the next to develop a complete picture of the opportunity. Many teams do not achieve this level of discussion, nor do they thoroughly examine what they do and don’t know, where and how to gather needed information, and how to advance their strategic goals. Teams fail to engage senior management in key discussions that could change the game. This session explores how to build compelling gate reviews, when to hold them, and how to generate strategic discussions. It explores material that should be presented and discusses how to build that material through capture so the team can determine its proposal readiness.
Tu Mu, Chinese military commentator, said, “If I wish to take advantage of the enemy I must perceive not just the advantage in doing so but must first consider the ways he can harm me if I do.” A key part of waging war and offensive strategies in the proposal world is to war game in a Black Hat review where we create potential war scenarios by aligning ourselves and our allies against a set of opponents. Each team assumes the competitor mindset and prepares as if they are the competition. Each team collects intelligence and develops their battle plans and using rules created to closely simulate battle (proposal evaluation) conditions, play out the war game in front of the evaluators. Only one team is victorious, we gain valuable insight into the strategies of our competition, and gather lessons learned. In this session, we explore the Black Hat process, how to define the competitive information you need upfront, develop high producing teams, optimize the teams’ products and leverage them in your proposal.

Using APEX for Mobile Web Applications has always lead to a limited user experience, compared to native mobile applications. The use of jQuery Mobile was a valid approach to overcome this, but had it’s difficulties and booby-traps for the developers. Recent enhancements to Universal Theme in APEX version 18 improved the UX. Combine this with the latest PWA features to provide a better user experience, mobile versions of APEX web applications are becoming much more user friendly and native-like.
I will explain the mobile functionality of APEX and Universal Theme, like mobile specific components and templates, touch gestures based dynamic actions, and show a real life public facing (mobile) web application. Beyond standard APEX functionality, I will show how to improve the mobile user experience with transition effects and PWA features like off-line handling, shortcut icons and notifications. If you read between the lines of Sun Tzu’s classic The Art of War, you will find much of the book is dedicated to risk identification and mitigation. Sun Tzu explains “Now the general who wins a battle makes many calculations in his temple before the battle is fought. The general who loses a battle makes but few calculations beforehand.” This session will present a model for rapidly forecasting risk and assessing your risk exposure. To facilitate the assessment of a bid’s risk exposure, attendees will receive risk symptom checklists. They can use the checklists to detect the early warning signs risks are approaching or test their overall risk awareness. The session will also present case studies explaining how you can rebound from risks including limited information about the client or competition, tight schedules, moving deadlines, scarce resources, and delusional colleagues.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex ProofsAlex Pruden
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

PowerPoint can export slides to several graphics formats, but doesn't let you control size of images, range of slides to be exported, way images are named, etc. Text quality often very poor.PPTools Image Exporter:Exports as GIF, JPG, PNG, WMF, EMF and TIFF.Exports one slide, selected slides, or whole presentation.Eliminates ugly text jaggies.Names/Numbers exported image files the way YOU want them.Lets you choose image size.Does "pixel math" for pre-press users. You just dial in the repro size and linescreen.
Compresses PowerPoint, Word, Excel, JPEG and PDF files by up to 95%*. (Also compresses other file format, e.g., Adobe IllustratorCompresses files from within Microsoft Office or integrates with email client to compress email attachments as they are sent (can toggle it on and off)Files remain in their original format, retaining all their attributes and visual content integrity –look and function identically to the originals, but are much smallerCould make a major difference between being able to email or upload a graphics-intensive proposal easily to a file-size restricted site! Also reduces upload/download times when working on a collaborative system or sending files to/from proposal team members
Wordman'sHiliter - Reusing content from prior proposals and want to make sure that you've caught all instances of that client's name? Does your legal team need to make sure that certain words are not used in your proposal? You could use Word's find and highlight feature on each word in turn, but Wordman'sHiliter, an add-in for Microsoft Word 2007/2010, allows you to check for multiple words and phrase, each with a different highlight color and search criteria, all at once!Add-in costs $50 per copy and can be purchased from WordMan’s website store at www.iamwordman.com. Can download 30-day evaluation copy (and the user guide) and then buy license in the store. WordMan emails license keys within 24 hours. Payment by PayPal and Google Merchant.
Purposes: Visually organize and manage information, people, and projects. Create graphical diagrams (mind maps) starting with a central theme and adding branches with ideas, notes, images, tasks—even hyperlinks and attachments. Improve work processes, visually document and implement best practicesVisually connect ideas and information to help save time, solve real business problems, improve business processes, and drive innovationBrainstorm and document meeting minutes/actionsMy brother and I both use it to plan our presentations – we can mindmap our presentation contents and then export the mindmap into individual topic slides in PowerPoint. I also use it to brainstorm my Journal and Perspective articles (we’ll look at the one I did after last year’s APMP conference – I went back and forth with the mindmap between MindManager and iThoughts HD on my iPad.It now integrates very tightly with MS Office 2010 and people use it for project management. You can integrate MS Outlook into it and do a lot of amazing things. Check out their website.Number of similar products – free and expensive – for me this had best ease of use, ability to easily export to other programs, best printing “look and feel”
Purposes: Screen capture utility Edit and combine captures (entire screen, window, active window, region, fixed region, object, menu, web page with links, sequential captures) Share captures via favorite applicationsOrganize and find them again laterGrab and mark up screen shots to help guide teams through using new technologyThere are a number of additional callouts, arrows, and stamps available on techsmith’s website for free that you can download and add to your application.Snagit File Formats - Simple intro and reference to file formats available for saving image captures in Snagit (strengths and weaknesses of each format).SNAG - Used to store Snagit projects with unflattened vector objects and an undo history. Only format that allows you to edit drawing tools like arrows and callouts after saving.SNAG files can't be viewed outside of Snagit. Best format for archiving captures (and is format used behind scenes when Snagitautosaves captures in Library). Tip: often useful to save copy of image in SNAG file format and final file format in case you need to make changes.PNG - Great for sharing images in documents, presentation slides, and online. It's lossless. That means that when file is compressed, it has exact same quality as an uncompressed image. Means that PNG files look exactly like the screen you captured. Supports full and partial transparency with 32 bit color depth. Can be viewed in almost all file viewers, graphics programs, and web browsers. (Only exception is MSInternet Explorer 6-- it doesn't display transparency information in PNG files.) Aside from IE 6 issue, the only possible drawback to PNG is file size. PNG's lossless compression results in smaller files than other lossless formats (like BMP), but still produces files larger than a lossy format like JPG. A slightly larger file is trade-off for a lossless image.JPG - found all over the Internet and is the default used by many digital cameras. Lossy format, which means that compression process used when saving file degrades quality of the image. Results in blocky, uneven colors and shapes in your image. This lossy compression works best in photographs, but tends to look bad with the solid colors and square shapes found in most screen captures. So, when should you use JPG? Some programs or websites might require JPGs. Other times, file size is a concern. Because it is a lossy format, JPG often results in the smallest file size for saved images. Unless you're really counting the kilobytes, PNG is almost always a better choice over JPG when it comes to screen capture images.GIF - older image file format, but is still in use. Supports a limited amount of animation, which is one of the reasons it's still useful. Only supports 256 colors per image. This limited color palette can lead to color banding on images with lots of color or gradients.GIF supports full color transparency only. A single color in the palette of 256 colors can be treated as a transparent color. Computer interfaces have become more visually complex, which means 256 colored paletted formats like GIF no longer accurately reflect what you see on your screen. The limited colors result in a smaller file size, but the drop in quality is a steep trade-off. BMP - lossless format, but unlike the lossless PNG format, BMP does not compress file size. This can result in very large files. Unless you have a specific need for a BMP file, the lossless and compressed PNG format is better for your images. Transparency in BMP files is not supported in Snagit. TIF - used for document scanning, as well as being the format used when dragging and dropping images on Mac OS X. TIF is not a common format on the PC, and is used mostly by applications taking advantage of the ability to add metadata to the file (TIF stands for Tagged Image Format). TIFs saved in Snagit don't have any particular advantage over a file format like PNG. But, TIF is there if you need it (and if you don't, you can safely ignore it).PDF - Snagit captures can be saved as a PDF. The most popular reason to save in the PDF format is when you use the "Keep Web links active" option. This captures hyperlink information and saves that as part of your capture. When saved as a PDF, the links that appear in your image are active links that point to their original destinations.Once saved as a PDF, the PDF file cannot be re-opened in Snagit.SWF - used to create a file that contains active links and hotspots. The only problem is that by default, SWF files aren't associated with a viewing program on most computers. Viewing a SWF file requires the viewer to open it in a web browser or Flash player. Unless you plan on hosting the SWF on the web or embedding it in a presentation slide or email, SWF files often cause confusion for your viewers. Once saved as a SWF, the SWF file cannot be re-opened in Snagit.SummaryFor almost all screen captures, the recommended file type is PNG. This is the default save type in Snagit, and for good reason. It's lossless compression gives great quality, reasonable file size, and supports features like transparency. For archiving captures, the SNAG file is the format of choice. It saves your editing history and allows you to make changes to draw tools and other vector objects on the canvas.
