A Starters Guide to Building APIs with JavascriptAll Things Open
Presented by: Tom Wilson, hyper63
Presented at the All Things Open Virtual Meetup
Abstract: APIs (Application Program Interfaces) is how programs can talk with other programs and is a design consideration for many products. Let’s discuss: Why you should build an application with an API? What are the top 5 requirements of designing an API with examples? Some open-source javascript frameworks that can help you design and build your API.
In order to get the most out of this talk, you should have a good understanding of http REST protocol and general application development. Familiarity with javascript and technologies like NodeJS and Express would be a plus.
In this talk, you should come away with a good understanding of why you should consider building an API in your application, key good practices every API should include, and how you could implement an API using Javascript.
Tools for designing and building great APIsKong Inc.
A review of tools that can be used to design APIs, understand how API design works and to mock infrastructure to test your assumptions.
We all know that a happy developer is a powerful ally.
The focus of this presentation is on the creation of APIs with the support of tools to achieve this. The goal is to create APIs that are simple for developers to understand and consume, powerful enough to be maintained by your business, in minutes rather than hours.
Creating a successful API requires a proper process from concept and design, through development, and into ongoing maintenance and good developer support. There are many steps to a good API. As developer expectations for better-quality APIs increase, tools have made it easier to do this well. Looking at the full API Product Lifecycle to design an API people will use, Jeremy Glassenberg will share the newest tools -- and potentially upcoming opportunities -- to better automate the planning and creation of a solid developer program.

API integrations can be a pain. Anyone who has worked on API integrations has probably observed that, as a general rule, no API server survives first contact with the client. Reasons vary, from badly written API documentation to complete lack of API documentation. In this presentation, I want to address this problem by showing how developers can minimize the risk of API integration failures by using an approach called documentation-driven development. In documentation-driven development, we write the API specification first using a standard specification format. I'll show how we can leverage documentation to test and validate our API implementations before we release them. I'll show how we can use tools from the current ecosystem, such as Dredd, to automatically generate tests that validate our APIs.
API Developer Experience: Why it Matters, and How Documenting Your API with S...SmartBear
Whether you’re new to Swagger, or have already been using the framework for API design, there’s a good chance you still have questions about how to improve your API documentation. Creating API documentation your consumers will love can take some work, but the investment will have a significant payoff in the form of a great developer experience, easier implementation, and improved adoption of your API.
This presentation covers good developer experience in detail, focusing on why and how to provide an optimal experience for developers using your API. We will also cover how Swagger has changed the API design and documentation landscape, and finally show some good practices for API documentation using Swagger in SwaggerHub’s integrated API development platform.

Documentation-driven development for Python web APIs v2José Haro Peralta
These are the updated slides for my presentation at EuroPython 2021. This version includes new slides and some corrections.
This presentation shows how we can use documentation-driven development to minimise the risk of API integration failures. APIs are the gateways that connect our web applications to the world. Microservices rely on them to work together, and frontend applications use them to connect to our backend. Despite their importance, API integration failures are a daily occurrence. There’re many reasons for this, but a common factor is the lack of API documentation, or the use of bad API documentation.
Often, API documentation comes in unstructured formats or in JSON examples, instead of standard formats such as OpenAPI or Schema Definition Language. When we don’t use standards to document our APIs, we give up the whole ecosystem of frameworks and tools built around those standards. Such tools and frameworks are designed to make our lives easier when managing the lifecycle of our APIs.
In documentation-driven development, we write the API specification first, and then we implement the API server and the client against the specification. I’ll show how we can use mock servers to test the client while the backend is being developed, and tools like Dredd and schemathesis to validate the backend implementation. I’ll show how we can use these tools in a CI server to validate our code before it’s released. This approach doesn’t eliminate completely the risk of API integration failures, but it helps to minimise it.

Using Swagger has become the most popular way to describe REST APIs across the web, enabling people to more quickly understand and communicate with services, with developer-friendly documentation and rich, autogenerated client SDKs. As the API has moved more into being one of the most important aspects of a service, the Swagger definition has become increasingly more important and essential to the design phase. This presentation explains how the Swagger definition can be used to streamline the iteration process and enable client and server engineers to develop concurrently with complex APIs.
APIdays Paris 2014 - Workshop - Craft and Deploy Your API in a Few Clicks Wit...Restlet
This workshop explained how to craft an API using the first multi-language dedicated Web IDE, host and scale the API with Platform as a Service for web APIs and manage access to this API; including: documentation, client SDKs, access management, firewall and analytics.
Helps you to understand Swagger and its practical uses for representing REST APIs. You’ll learn some ways to get started. We’ll survey some of the tools and resources for describing REST APIs with Swagger. We’ll talk about what Swagger is (a specification and framework) — and isn’t (merely another doc tool). We’ll talk about the pros and cons of the Swagger-UI. And we’ll look at how Swagger helps people to learn about and explore an API.
If you are an API provider and need to promote your public program, catalogue your API in these directories to increase its visibility. Or, trying to find web APIs for development? These resources also act as a good way to discover new APIs!

Versioning strategy for a complex internal API (Konstantin Yakushev)Nordic APIs
This is a session given by Konstantin Yakushev at Nordic APIs 2016 Platform Summit on October 25th, in Stockholm Sweden.
Description:
API versioning is a very heated topic in API design world. Common approaches are passing version number explicitly (with a lot of fairly useless discussion on where exactly to put that number) or only introducing backwards-compatible changes.
When creating internal API for Badoo applications we found those approaches to be too limiting. Passing version number requires implementers to accommodate for all breaking changes when bumping version – even when it’s not required for business goals of that application at the time. Instead of driving value for business, application developers are in constant race to keep up with the API.
Never introducing incompatible changes is also not an option. After several feature redesigns (something that may happen at Badoo once every few weeks) protocol becomes bloated and half of the fields transmitted over the wire start being useless.
This talk is about our approach to versioning as part of client-server component negotiation. Client announces features and capabilities it supports and server replies with features status: whether they are enabled or disabled and whether they can be enabled by some user action (e. g. by buying some paid product).
Beside those componentized features, client also sends support flags such as SUPPORT_IMAGE_SIZE_VIA_URL which affects how API works. We use those flags where in typical API a version number bump would be required.
This approach allows both server and client to understand their current state and adjust their code accordingly – essentially, a tailor-made API for every client. Gathering data on feature and flag support among clients allows us to remove old code branches while continuing to evolve the API.
As a result, we are not afraid to change something when that change is required. Old clients continue to work while protocol rot is kept at low level.
In this talk I will give details on how exactly this versioning scheme work, how we test those changes, how and when we deprecate our old clients and note some stats and insights from using this scheme at Badoo for several years.
In our deep-dive technical series, we look at the strategic importance of having Baas as part of your API Management solution. Apigee Edge API BaaS enables web and mobile app developers to link their apps to a cloud datastore and provide features including user management, push notifications, geolocation services, and more.
Pure APIs: Development workflows for successful API integrationsJosé Haro Peralta
APIs are the fundamental tenets of the Internet. They enable integrations between different services, and they power the servers that bring our applications to life. API integrations lay at the core of our API-driven world, and delivering successful API integrations is fundamental to sustain it. However, more often than not, API integrations tend to fail due to ineffective development workflows. In this presentation, I want to present various API development workflows that have helped me and my clients deliver successful API integrations. I’ll show how documentation-driven development, using mock servers, robust API testing frameworks, and API visibility tools can help to significantly reduce the chances of API integration failure and to keep errors under control.
A survey of various tools and techniques commonly used by API craftsman. API specification languages, testing, debugging and analytics are covered.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!
