From apps to APIs: how no-code is transforming the tech industry
Carmen Chung, Senior Product Manager at Linktree
2. What is the no-code / low-code movement?
Why is there so much hype about it?
How does the movement relate to APIs?
What does it mean for the tech industry?

3. What is the no-
code / low-code
movement?
The rise of tools that allow non-technical
users to create software using a visual UI.
Often relies on an integrations ecosystem /
marketplace.
The low-code movement is similar. It allows
for more customisation in exchange for a
some knowledge of coding. The focus is
often on helping developers build a flow to
automate repetitive tasks.

4. Why is there so
much hype
about it?
Technology becomes an enabler of product
creation, with pre-made building blocks.
Forrester: no-code movement will be worth
$21.2 billion by 2022.
Gartner: low-code will be responsible for
more than 65% of app development by
2024.

10. Meet Bob from
marketing.
Bob wants to enter a phrase into Google
Sheets.
Every hour, an AI platform should suggest
copy based on his phrase, which then gets
added to Google Sheets.
Then a Slack message should be sent to
Bob, telling him copy is ready for review.
Bob will probably edit the suggested copy
in Google Sheets.
He should then be able to push a button to
send the copy out as a Tweet.
A Slack message should be sent to Bob
confirming the Tweet has been sent.

16. What does this mean
for the tech industry?
No code / low code doesn't eliminate the
need for software engineers.
It's less appropriate for:
tech stacks with complex architecture
and a heterogenous ecosystem;
platforms requiring high levels of
customisation;
platforms experiencing high levels of
rapid growth.
@carmenhchung
17. No code/ low code can
make our lives easier.
Startups: Move faster and create prototypes
to take to market within days so you can
validate your ideas earlier.
Marketers / Designers: Update dynamic
content yourself without engineers, and
visualise data without SQL.
Engineers: Get freedom from writing
uninteresting code to automate repetitive
tasks - do work you are interested in.

The next era of tech
companies will be
embracing no
code/low code
when it makes
sense - and building
custom tooling
when it doesn't.
