This document discusses how connected cars and APIs will drive value by 2020:
- By 2020, 90% of new cars are expected to have built-in connectivity, up from 10% today.
- Connected cars will generate large amounts of diverse data from various sources. APIs will be needed to access this data and share it with third parties.
- Emerging use cases for connected cars that utilize APIs include reliable communication, fleet management, and usage-based insurance. This will enable new applications and business models around connected vehicles.
Consumers in today's programmable world are deriving value from connected experiences that extend beyond their smartphones, tablets, and PCs. Come learn about GM OnStar's journey through 17 years of connectivity: how they are opening up to developers and creating a thriving digital ecosystem through APIs, apps, and data.

Semantic Repository of Linked Data for Interoperability of Software Defined...Pratik Desai, PhD
Semantic technologies have been successful in solving challenges associated with interoperability and machine intelligence. In the new wave of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, it is difficult to galvanize movement such as schema.org to standardize linked data annotation models for various vaguely defined subsections such as health care, wearable device, smart home, industrial internet and others.
Among these subdomains, automotive industry has really well defined properties and data models for the components being used and their relationships. Therefore in the IoT domain, it is a comparatively convenient task to define the concept of “Software Defined Car” platform that utilizes linked data and other semantic technologies. The platform should enable interoperability and reasoning between components of the car while also providing accessibility to the external internet technologies such as web services, software applications, big data analytic and artificial intelligence.
This presentation will include detailed description of the following milestones to achieve the greater goal, mentioned above:
Identify major properties and relationships to create default ontologies for a car
Develop tools for manufacturer to create individual linked data models from the default
Repository that store and provide access to the linked data models through APIs
Platform the enables access of the physical components of the car to other services through the URIs
Security layer to restrict authentication and access of the different properties of the model

Connected car solutions: one of the major business drivers for the automotive...Pierre Audoin Consultants
With the connected car topic the automotive industry is about to experience a technological leap that will substantially change mobility. Automotive manufacturers are increasingly considering the integration of information technology and external services in their cars.
Against this background, PAC conducted a survey among 250 CxOs in European automotive companies (in France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the UK) with more than 50 employees. The study explores the strategies of the automotive industry to develop and launch connected car technologies and services and deals with the following questions:
- What is the status quo in terms of the development of connected car services and which areas are in the focus?
- Which trends and changes are important?
- What are the (main) challenges?
- What role do politics and standardization play regarding connected car offerings?
- What are the strategies and objectives that automotive companies pursue?
- How important are external services?
- What are upcoming investment plans and who are the decision makers?

The next “big” mobile services screen is in the vehicle.
Consumers expect Smart Phone like mobile services experience in their car.
In parallel to that trend, car manufactureres want to learn more about their products and how they are used and embrace the connectivity with Big Data and Analytics
In the past decade, auto manufacturers have installed various technologies designed to make cars safer, more responsive, and more pleasurable to drive. From the hands-free cellphone, to iPod berths, to satellite radio, to automated parking—not to mention Google’s self-driving vehicle—the automobile is undergoing an electronic overhaul that promises to transform its role for consumers. What once was perceived as personal transportation is fast evolving into a new mobile device, merging with the digital world into an all-encompassing communications environment.
This ongoing transformation is poised to shift into high gear as cars display still greater connectivity and broader capabilities than ever. What makes this shift different from the way automobiles adopted new technologies in the past is that this time, automakers may have to consider how they can quickly merge consumer electronics and software with their traditional automotive systems.

The connected or driverless car is no longer something of the realms of science-fiction, it is very much a reality. The trend is expected to continue too, as the connected car makes its way into the mainstream much as the original automobile did a century ago. Connected cars will continue to grow as APAC’s consumer needs go on changing, demographics continue to alter and urban mobility trends shift.

Autonomous Vehicles: Technologies, Economics, and OpportunitiesJeffrey Funk
These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course entitled analyzing hi-tech opportunities to show how the cost and performance of autonomous vehicles are improving rapidly. LIDAR, other sensors, ICs, and wireless are experiencing rapid improvements that are enabling the overall cost of AVs to fall. For example, the latency of wireless systems is improving rapidly thus enabling vehicles to be controlled with wireless systems. This is also creating many new opportunities in the vehicle industry in the Internet of Things, data analytics, and logistics. The slides include a detailed discussion of AVs in Singapore, a likely early adopter.
Connected Cars Are the Next Must Have Consumer Electronics DeviceCisco Jasper
The focus of connected services by car manufacturers lately has been building out the connected services suite. The next transformation of services won’t be in the services themselves but in the business models of offering the services. If the car is to become a true consumer internet device, it will require real internet style monetization models.
In this talk, Mark Thomas, head of connected car product marketing for Cisco Jasper, explores internet monetization models, the infrastructure needed to monetize internet style and also learn about the vocabulary a vehicle knows when it’s an always on connected IoT device.

The impact of the Internet of things on the automotive sector.
How will it change business models, broaden business opportunities and bring new services to consumers
What are the next challenges from security to customer relationships
The Internet of things is spreading its influence on all the verticals we can think of. From healthcare to agriculture, connected devices are proving to be more and more valuable everyday.
On the consumer side, very much has been said about wearables and smart home appliances. But one of the industries the most impacted by the IoT revolution is definitely the automotive sector.
The internet of things is changing the way car dealers sell cars and consumers drive them. The emergence of new products and new services will ultimately craft a new economy for the car industry. If they want to survive, the various players of the automotive industry, from carmakers, to OEMs, to insurers, will have to adapt their business model.
Fortunately, most of them have already jumped on the bandwagon. All the players of the automotive industry are now catching up, competing with each other to launch ever more innovative features.
In this presentation, we explore how the IoT is impacting the automotive sector and what new services are emerging.

The auto and telecom industries have been dreaming of connected cars for twenty years, but their results have been mediocre and mixed. Now, just as a potentially costly standards battle looms between DSRC and 5G wireless communications technologies, those technologies may be leapfrogged by embedded vision – enabled by the combination of rapidly advancing image sensors, machine vision algorithms, and embedded AI chips. These technologies are not just changing the car itself; they enable new driving patterns and business models that are fueling new competitors and transforming the industry.
