Are anti-depressants addicting, and can you can go through withdrawal from
them?
There are many different anti-depressants, and we are talking about non-narcotic anti-
depressants such as, for example, Zoloft, Wellbutrin, Paxil, Pamelor, Cymbalta,
Celexa, just to name a few. There are many non-narcotic anti-depressants.
What happens in today’s world, especially when you’re dealing with substance abuse,
your substance abuse physician is very careful not to put you on any type of narcotic
anti-depressants.
Anti-depressants usually are
prescribed for depression, anti-
anxiety, panic disorder,
obsessive-compulsive
disorder, chronic pain, post-
traumatic stress disorder, and
eating disorders, to name a
few.
Most physicians usually put
you on anti-depressants for
three to six months. When you
start to wean off of the medication, it’s very important that you talk to your doctor or
health care professional, and not do this on your own.
With the withdrawal component, it’s very important to do this under the guidance of a
healthcare professional.
You may experience is a withdrawal condition called Anti-depressant Discontinuation
Syndrome.
Without a properly managed withdrawal, or if you try to discontinue the anti-depressant
too quickly, you can experience withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, anxiety,
insomnia, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and nausea.

3. It’s very, very important to go see a healthcare professional.
There are certain vitamins such as 5HTC and L-tyrosine that can be substituted while
weaning off. These can help maintain serotonin levels to ease the discomfort of
withdrawal.
It is very important once again that you seek professional help when weaning off an
anti-depressant and going on an anti-depressant, so once again, please, if you think
you need an anti-depressant, please go see your healthcare professional.
There also are other ways to help you such as therapeutic interventions, exercise,
vitamin therapy. Your healthcare professional can help you design a program specific
to your needs.
