Homosexuality is illegal and persecuted in Jamaica. The culture and religion in Jamaica and many Caribbean islands view homosexuality as a crime. Article 79 of Jamaica's Offenses Against the Person Act punishes homosexual acts with up to two years imprisonment and hard labor. Reggae artists like Elephant Man and Sizzla promote homophobic lyrics that contribute to Jamaica's reputation as a dangerous place for LGBT people. While laws against homosexuality are not strictly enforced, the culture of homophobia allows for harassment. Changing attitudes and laws is difficult due to the influence of religion and anti-gay music in Jamaican culture.
