Homophobia is an extreme aversion to homosexuality and homosexual people. The media portrays many stereotypes of gay and lesbian people, influencing public views. There are also legal issues around gay rights like marriage, which was a topic in the recent US presidential election. For celebrities and public figures, publicly coming out as gay can negatively impact their careers, though some like Ellen DeGeneres have gained fans from it. Homophobia remains an issue in everyday life, though attitudes are improving over time.

In the world today, the most stereotyped and criticized groups in America are the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities which are trying to take a stand proudly against the drama that comes with several issues which surround their lifestyle. A homosexual is a person who has any physical or emotional attraction to a person of the same sex, or who can be stereotyped, placed into other groups such as gay, bisexual, lesbian, transgender, curious and other labels which the heterosexual community has placed on them. Many people may question why does homosexuality exist? Some may even think if it is a choice than why some people would choose to go against it. Some people may utilize the argumentation theory when it comes to marriage and feel that marriage should be between a man and a woman and that the definition of marriage makes same sex marriage irregular, but this paper is intended to show that the new definition of marriage should consist of allowing all lovers to experience it.
Homosexuality existence has not been an issue which has become a big debate often but how homosexuality has arrived into the world has become very questionable. Many people often wonder how or what makes a person want to be gay. There is no study which shows information on religious measures when it comes to being gay, as well as the cause of homosexuality. Religion is sometimes associated with the belief that homosexuals may choose their own sexual orientation rather it be gay, transgender, or bisexual. The views on this topic can be immediately viewed by a society which may argue that there is some sort of act of acquiring of gay, transgender, or bisexual traits. Some may feel the causes of homosexuality can be controllable or not controllable. Some people may believe that the controllable act on homosexuality is a personal choice when an individual is deciding on their sexual preference. Some people may even feel that the environment an individual is around will have a direct result on their sexuality. This can possibly mean that if a human being is raised in a household where homosexuality is viewed as being wrong or the people in household have a negative impact on same sex couples, than chances are the individual may not have a greater chance at becoming gay.
Many homosexuals may not struggle with trying to explain how or why they choose to become gay but may struggle with certain issues such as being accepted for their lifestyle to many of their friends, family, co-workers and even sometimes strangers. When a homosexual chooses to come out the closet, they tend to make a huge statement to themselves, family and their other peers that they are proud of who they are and proud to be gay. This sometimes becomes a moment of excitement for the gay community and allows them to be free of keeping their sexuality hidden. The only choice that a homosexual may make regarding their sexual preference is the choice of when and who to come out to.

Homosexuals have been a special group of interest since earlier years. This group of person has been raising special interest in the society across different religion, local, state and even at national as well as the globe. What can be remembered about homosexuals is that they are people who do not relate upright to normal intimate behaviors (Herek, 2002). There are two views of homosexuals, the old view and the modern view. The old view of homosexual holds that this group of persons is cursed and is not fit in the society (Moeller, 2010). The earlier view, which is roughly known to have existed before 1969, treated homosexuals in a discriminate manner. They were indeed taken to psychiatric hospitals for treatment in addition to being arrested and jailed. Social discrimination was rampant to this group and this was done even in the full knowledge of authorities. However, the modern view about homosexual is not really different from the earlier vies but homosexual can get human services, which were hardly possible in earlier years (Cocks, 2003). Today, homosexual are treated like normal people with no discrimination although they raise concerns in the society about how ethical they behavior is. Comment by Margo Farwell: The modern view isn’t different? It used to be viewed as a sin and many today view it as a lifestyle. This seems like a different view.
History behind homosexuals: Gay and Lesbian in the US
A. Homosexual before 1969
The history of homosexuals in the US is vividly remembered after the 1969 Stonewall Uprising. This uprising was an event that scholars use to capture real information about the history of gay and lesbian people in the U.S. While homosexual is said to have been around for long time, it has been having changes and event occurrences. Quality information about homosexual is recorded and reported after the Second World War (Moeller, 2010). After this event, the society settled down and begun self development. This development was key to having successful evaluation of the society and its people. Since the 1950s homosexual has been happening all over the U.S and probably in the whole world. States and local governments had known about the vice and most of them banned homosexuality and labeled it a crime. All states in the U.S. mentions homosexuality in their laws and did not allow (Brett, Wood, and Thomas, 2006). People who were found committing the vice were arrest.
1. Homophobia: An extreme and irrational aversion to homosexuality and homosexual people.
The media holds many problems for men, women and especially homosexual and lesbian
males/females. Conflicts views are everywhere you go in the media, on the news, movies,
books and in politics, different portrayals and stereotypes can be seen everywhere. The media
has a major impact on the public, by publishing stories about gay people and people reading
them, they are moulding peoples view on gay
people.
There are legal issues within the world; gay
marriage is legal throughout the United
Kingdom, whereas in the United States of
America there are many states which have a
ban on gay marriage causing trouble for
many people.
Gay marriage was centre of attention with
the election that has just been in America
alongside with many other issues such as
economy, health and terrorism. Coverage of
speech’s made by Obama and Romney
reached most of the population of America therefore having a massive impact on people’s
views. As Obama and Romney are huge personals they have a great influence, if you’re
support Romney throughout the election you will agree with what Romney believes in which
is against gay couples and marriage. It is very rare that gay people have the support of major
politicians such as Obama, who will stand up and speak for gay rights.
It is difficult for people ‘coming out’ in normal life situations to people who will love them
for who they are; their family and friends. The whole ‘coming out’ circumstance changes
when you’re in the public eye 24/7, stories changed and moulded to create entertainment for
the public, people using your nervousness of revealing such a massive thing about yourself to
make a good story in the media. Watching a television show ‘Most Shocking…’ there was
numerous of interviews with directors of movies, actors, publishers big in the business all
stating that ‘if anyone in the public light was to publicity announce that they were in fact gay,
they would lose a lot of fans and work’. Ellen DeGeneres, is the main actress/presenter to go
against this saying. She has gained more fans due to the fact of coming out but is known by
many people as ‘the lesbian on television’ so there is a negatives to the come with the
positives. Homophobia is on the downfall but it is
still part of everyday life, many gay people are tried
different as it hits the world news, for example,
Jaymi Hensley off X Factor revealed he was gay during an
interview and it went all over the news. Many people say
they don’t treat homosexual people different to straight
people but if this was true, it shouldn’t hit world news
and homosexual should be accepts for who they are,
having courage for someone to ‘come out’ and reveal
their sexually is a big thing and the only thing making it
worse for the celebrities is the press writing stories about it. There are differences between
the UK and USA for people in the public light as there are many more people in the UK who
are openly gay, where ‘camp’ is their stage persona, the likes of David Williams (UK) – a
straight actor and comedian married to a blonde glamorous women, but gives off the image
that he is gay. Alan Carr, Paul O’Gradyand Gok Wan (UK) - openly gay men who play on
the ‘camp’ effect and are all home names. Neil Patrick Harris (USA) – in an open gay
2. marriage, he played major parts in the ‘How I Met Your Mother’ where he is shown getting
with many women. Whereas, with homosexual women, it is very rare that a women would
‘come out’ even if the women as too come out there are very few that are in the public eye
like males. The fact that there are websites for ‘Lesbians Under 30’ etc all over the internet
show that being straight and gay are completely different types of people.
