Same-sex Marriage Lecture 1: What is Marriage and Why does redefining it make...FamilyMan2
Redefining marriage brings about social change. A small part of this change is positive, but it also brings about a lot of negative social outcomes too. In this first lecture we look at the definition of marriage and why redefining it to suit the needs some 2% of the population will make it ever harder for the 98% of heterosexuals to build successful marriages of their own
The two perspectives differ from one another in that the functionalist works together for a solution and strays from change whereas the conflict leans toward change and expects society to cope and grow from it. The functionalist’s perspective of teamwork is productive, but the fear of change may prevent economic growth in spite of stability. The conflict’s perspective doesn’t fear to change the system up, but the hasty actions may have consequences that society itself won’t be able to cope with. Decisions are made without the approval and consensus of the majority of the population, which can prevent stability.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
A severe global recession has brought heightened attention to poverty in the United States as the poverty rate rose over time, leveling off at 15.0% in 2011. Recent U.S. Census Bureau data demonstrates the persistence of higher poverty rates for African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans, Children, single mothers, people with disabilities, and other groups, for example. An earlier Williams Institute study and other research showed that lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB)
people we are also more vulnerable to being poor, and this
study updates and extends that earlier report.

Robert Heist is the president of R. Conor & Associates and a principal attorney based in Illinois. One of Robert Heist’s areas of expertise is the analysis of poverty in schools amongst impoverished children.
A study conducted by University of Maryland researchers has found that economic segregation has deepened in schools nationwide. In other words, children living below the poverty line have become less likely to share a school with children from middle-class families. The number of children below the poverty line that attended elementary school fell from 45 percent in 2000 to 36 percent in 2015.
These gaps represent a generation of children starting their lives with a significant disadvantage compared to others. These divisions are also reportedly synchronized with racial divisions. Latino children from low-income households are more likely to be isolated from middle-income, White families in distinctly underfunded schools. These trends point to White families distancing themselves from poorer ones, which indicates entire neighborhoods becoming racially segregated on an economic basis.
This presentation was made in my legislative process class regarding the legislation of Proposition 8 in California. The presenter, named Tim, shouted down people wanting to debate his points, called me out in the back of the class as a homophobe, ignorant, white trash, wife beating, intolerant Republican, and proceeded to entail that Abraham Lincoln (who was married with 4 kids), President Buchanan, and JESUS CHRIST were all Homosexuals, all while admitting in a defensive posture that he had been "known to date men" from time to time. Any reasonable debate is out the window with this guy, much like Thomas Jefferson said, "If you argue with a fool, nobody watching will be able to tell the difference." Or maybe he was Gay too, I\'m not too sure. I had to leave the room because I was laughing too hard by the time he started referring to Jesus, the alleged Homosexual Vegetarian that the left LOVES!

Black/White Dating Online: Interracial Courtship in the
21st Century
Gerald A. Mendelsohn, Lindsay Shaw Taylor, Andrew T. Fiore, and Coye Cheshire
University of California, Berkeley
We analyzed personal profiles and records of communication for more than a million
nationwide users of a major online dating site. White more than Black, women more
than men, and old more than young users stated a preference for a same-race partner.
Overall, Blacks, especially Black men, proved more open to cross-race dating than did
Whites. More than 80% of the contacts initiated by Whites were to Whites, with only
3% to Blacks. This sharp difference held for men and women and even for those who
stated no racial or ethnic preference in their profiles. Blacks were 10 times more likely
to contact Whites than Whites were to contact Blacks. Reciprocations to messages
showed the same trends, but more moderately.
Keywords: interracial dating, interethnic courtship, online dating, interpersonal attraction, inter-
group relations
At two in the morning on July 11, 1958, the
bedroom of Richard and Mildred Loving, a
married couple of mixed race, was entered by a
Virginia sheriff and two deputies who arrested
them for violation of the state’s Racial Integrity
Act. Nine years later, the Supreme Court ruled
that antimiscegenation laws were unconstitu-
tional. The ruling came three centuries after the
first antimiscegenation statute was enacted in
the United States. Despite being unenforceable,
antimiscegenation legislation was not finally re-
moved from the books of all 50 states until 2000
when, by a vote of 59% to 41%, it was repealed
in Alabama. Clearly, throughout the country’s
history, interracial couples have had to contend
with a less than friendly environment. Recent
evidence indicates, however, that in the past
four decades there has been a marked change in
attitudes toward marriage between a Black and
a White person. Gallup Poll data collected in
1968 showed that 73% of Americans disap-
proved of interracial marriage, while 20% ap-
proved. The corresponding percentages in 2007
were 17% and 77%, a complete reversal (Car-
roll, 2007). The percentage of Black respon-
dents approving has been consistently higher
than the percentage not approving, but the per-
centages moved from 56% approving versus
33% against in 1968 to 85% versus 10% in
2007. In all groups (White, Black, and His-
panic), the percent approving is a function of
age; nevertheless, in the most recent poll, more
than two thirds of those aged 50 years ap-
proved (Jones, 2011). The change in attitude has
been paralleled by a change in behavior. During
the same 40-year period, the prevalence of
Black–White marriages increased more than
fivefold. Still, 1% of all marriages in the
United States are between a White and a Black
person (U.S. Census Bureau, 2011), a rate well
below what would be expected by chance. Even
among newlyweds in 2008, a group that is on
average considerably younger than the general ...

AVANSE MICROPROJECTS SERIES INTRODUCTION: WHY SUPPORT INTERNATIONAL STREET KIDS ?
Tuesday, February 24th 2015
Presented by Erin Broderick, Director, Secretary and Legal Counsel of Avanse
Hosted by New Generation Power
A conversation examining the unique and complex factors contributing to the street youth crisis in Latin America and the Caribbean in our NEW MicroProjects Series.
More than 100 million children are homeless worldwide, approximately 40 million of which live in Latin America and the Caribbean. Children living on the streets are especially vulnerable to victimization, exploitation, and the abuse of their civil and economic rights. Children often experience the effects of political, economic, and social crises within their countries more severely than adults, and lack the adequate institutional support to address and protect their special needs.
Attached is is the presentation by Avanse and Baker & Mackenzie's, Erin Broderick, an attorney dedicated to street youth advocacy, in a discussion regarding the legal, political, economic, and cultural factors that have perpetuated the street youth problem in Latin America and the Caribbean, the potential for change through global cooperative efforts, and the benefit to the US from investment in the initiative.
The Avanse MicroProjects are a series of focused initiatives intended to identify, cultivate and execute long-term solutions to the everyday obstacles faced by street kids. The program is structured to motivate our community to get involved in the process of developing solutions and directly contribute to advancing the lives of street kids in Latin America and the Caribbean. The series will continue every 4th Tuesday of the month where YOU, our partners, and Avanse will identify solutions to develop programs that impact these street kids' lives based on the research we conduct.
Avanse is a 501(c)3 nonprofit whose mission is to advance the lives of street kids in Latin America and the Caribbean.

(May 29th, 2024) Advancements in Intravital Microscopy- Insights for Preclini...Scintica Instrumentation
Intravital microscopy (IVM) is a powerful tool utilized to study cellular behavior over time and space in vivo. Much of our understanding of cell biology has been accomplished using various in vitro and ex vivo methods; however, these studies do not necessarily reflect the natural dynamics of biological processes. Unlike traditional cell culture or fixed tissue imaging, IVM allows for the ultra-fast high-resolution imaging of cellular processes over time and space and were studied in its natural environment. Real-time visualization of biological processes in the context of an intact organism helps maintain physiological relevance and provide insights into the progression of disease, response to treatments or developmental processes.
In this webinar we give an overview of advanced applications of the IVM system in preclinical research. IVIM technology is a provider of all-in-one intravital microscopy systems and solutions optimized for in vivo imaging of live animal models at sub-micron resolution. The system’s unique features and user-friendly software enables researchers to probe fast dynamic biological processes such as immune cell tracking, cell-cell interaction as well as vascularization and tumor metastasis with exceptional detail. This webinar will also give an overview of IVM being utilized in drug development, offering a view into the intricate interaction between drugs/nanoparticles and tissues in vivo and allows for the evaluation of therapeutic intervention in a variety of tissues and organs. This interdisciplinary collaboration continues to drive the advancements of novel therapeutic strategies.

Seminar of U.V. Spectroscopy by SAMIR PANDASAMIR PANDA
Spectroscopy is a branch of science dealing the study of interaction of electromagnetic radiation with matter.
Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy refers to absorption spectroscopy or reflect spectroscopy in the UV-VIS spectral region.
Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy is an analytical method that can measure the amount of light received by the analyte.
The ability to recreate computational results with minimal effort and actionable metrics provides a solid foundation for scientific research and software development. When people can replicate an analysis at the touch of a button using open-source software, open data, and methods to assess and compare proposals, it significantly eases verification of results, engagement with a diverse range of contributors, and progress. However, we have yet to fully achieve this; there are still many sociotechnical frictions.
Inspired by David Donoho's vision, this talk aims to revisit the three crucial pillars of frictionless reproducibility (data sharing, code sharing, and competitive challenges) with the perspective of deep software variability.
Our observation is that multiple layers — hardware, operating systems, third-party libraries, software versions, input data, compile-time options, and parameters — are subject to variability that exacerbates frictions but is also essential for achieving robust, generalizable results and fostering innovation. I will first review the literature, providing evidence of how the complex variability interactions across these layers affect qualitative and quantitative software properties, thereby complicating the reproduction and replication of scientific studies in various fields.
I will then present some software engineering and AI techniques that can support the strategic exploration of variability spaces. These include the use of abstractions and models (e.g., feature models), sampling strategies (e.g., uniform, random), cost-effective measurements (e.g., incremental build of software configurations), and dimensionality reduction methods (e.g., transfer learning, feature selection, software debloating).
I will finally argue that deep variability is both the problem and solution of frictionless reproducibility, calling the software science community to develop new methods and tools to manage variability and foster reproducibility in software systems.

DERIVATION OF MODIFIED BERNOULLI EQUATION WITH VISCOUS EFFECTS AND TERMINAL V...Wasswaderrick3
In this book, we use conservation of energy techniques on a fluid element to derive the Modified Bernoulli equation of flow with viscous or friction effects. We derive the general equation of flow/ velocity and then from this we derive the Pouiselle flow equation, the transition flow equation and the turbulent flow equation. In the situations where there are no viscous effects , the equation reduces to the Bernoulli equation. From experimental results, we are able to include other terms in the Bernoulli equation. We also look at cases where pressure gradients exist. We use the Modified Bernoulli equation to derive equations of flow rate for pipes of different cross sectional areas connected together. We also extend our techniques of energy conservation to a sphere falling in a viscous medium under the effect of gravity. We demonstrate Stokes equation of terminal velocity and turbulent flow equation. We look at a way of calculating the time taken for a body to fall in a viscous medium. We also look at the general equation of terminal velocity.
Richard's aventures in two entangled wonderlandsRichard Gill
Since the loophole-free Bell experiments of 2020 and the Nobel prizes in physics of 2022, critics of Bell's work have retreated to the fortress of super-determinism. Now, super-determinism is a derogatory word - it just means "determinism". Palmer, Hance and Hossenfelder argue that quantum mechanics and determinism are not incompatible, using a sophisticated mathematical construction based on a subtle thinning of allowed states and measurements in quantum mechanics, such that what is left appears to make Bell's argument fail, without altering the empirical predictions of quantum mechanics. I think however that it is a smoke screen, and the slogan "lost in math" comes to my mind. I will discuss some other recent disproofs of Bell's theorem using the language of causality based on causal graphs. Causal thinking is also central to law and justice. I will mention surprising connections to my work on serial killer nurse cases, in particular the Dutch case of Lucia de Berk and the current UK case of Lucy Letby.

Toxic effects of heavy metals : Lead and Arsenicsanjana502982
Heavy metals are naturally occuring metallic chemical elements that have relatively high density, and are toxic at even low concentrations. All toxic metals are termed as heavy metals irrespective of their atomic mass and density, eg. arsenic, lead, mercury, cadmium, thallium, chromium, etc.
2. Gay/Lesbian
Gay and Lesbian is defined as homosexuality is romantic or sexual attraction or behavior
among members of the same sex/gender.
Gay meaning homosexual became established in the 1960s
as the term preferred by homosexual men to describe
themselves. It is now the standard accepted term
throughout the English-speaking world. Gay in its modern
sense typically refers to men (lesbian being the standard
term for homosexual women) but in some contexts it can be
used of both men and women.

Gay and lesbian Americans are often portrayed and stereotyped as disproportionately affluent, but it's more likely that relatively
affluent gay people are simply more visible. A new report by V. Lee Badgett, Laura E. Durso, and Alyssa Schneebaum for the Williams
Institute at UCLA shows that in many respects LGBT couples are actually more economically stressed than their straight counterparts.
In the American Community Survey, 7.6 percent of lesbian couples, compared with 5.7 percent of married different-sex couples,
are in poverty.
African-American same-sex couples have poverty rates more than twice the rate of different-sex married African-Americans.
One-third of lesbian couples and 20.1 percent of gay male couples without a high-school diploma are in poverty, compared with
18.8 percent of different-sex married couples.
Lesbian couples who live in rural areas are much more likely to be poor (14.1 percent), compared with 4.5 percent of coupled
lesbians in large cities. And 10.2 percent of men in same-sex couples who live in small metropolitan areas are poor, compared with
only 3.3 percent of coupled gay men in large metropolitan areas.
Almost 1 in 4 children living with a male same-sex couple and 19.2 percent of children living with a female same-sex couple are in
poverty, compared with 12.1 percent of children living with married different-sex couples. African-American children in gay male
households have the highest poverty rate (52.3 percent) of any children in any household type.
And 14.1 percent of lesbian couples and 7.7 percent of gay male couples receive food stamps, compared with 6.5 percent of
different-sex married couples. Also, 2.2 percent of women in same-sex couples receive government cash assistance, compared with
0.8 percent of women in different-sex couples; 1.2 percent of men in same-sex couples, compared with 0.6 percent of men in
different-sex couples, receive cash assistance.
