Non-native, alien, species often have a devastating impact on native species. This is especially true when the non-natives become invasive and overwhelm the native species through increased competition or predation. In this lab, we investigate the effect of non-native plant cover on native species diversity in coastal sage scrub. Coastal sage scrub (CSS) is a community characterized by a diverse assemblage of plants many of which are endemic to southern California. Some species are shallow rooted and survive the summer by dropping their leaves and going dormant. Other species are deeply rooted and survive the summer drought by accessing ground water deep in the soil, and by conserving water by closing their stomata, pores in the leaves that allow for the diffusion of CO2 in, but also allow H2O to diffuse out. We have lost most of our CSS habitat to development, and in the remaining patches, invasive non-native grasses and annuals often outcompete the native species after disturbance, which results in the conversion of shrublands to non-native grasslands.
Restoration attempts reverse the conversion of CSS by removing non-native species and introducing native species through planting or seeding. In one sense, you can think of restoration as instant succession. However, restoration is tricky, and projects often fail, or require constant maintenance to remove non-natives.
The purpose of this lab is to investigate the relationship between invasive species cover, and native species diversity in restored and un-restored CSS habitat. We will compare the following:
· Invasive vs. native cover in restored and un-restored areas of CSS.
· Invasive cover vs. species diversity in restored and un-restored CSS.

Seeking Food Rights is a good model because it suggests different areas of life that are significant to food security and food sovereignty in Uzbekistan (Chapters 1-7) and in the US in Chapter 8. Note that in the Uzbek case, questions of inequality by class, urban-rural differences, gender, and ethnicity are important to food security and food sovereignty for various people and groups. The government and/or market’s control over agriculture, land, and people’s shopping opportunities are also important to consider. On a global scale, the amount of food and kinds of food that are imported and exported from a country influences food security and food sovereignty. For example, if farmers mostly grow coffee or bananas, there is little land to grow their own food to eat.

An important part of our course is researching information on diversity and multiculturalism and its social, cultural, and ethical impact upon individual citizens, groups of people, and society at large.
Below are four scenarios pertaining to cultural diversity. For this assignment, you will prepare a research paper that focuses on one of these scenarios, analyzing what happened, what the consequences either are or might be, and how the situation can be corrected and or prevented in the future. These must be concrete suggestions that could actually be implemented rather than vague references or opinions. While the situations have been fictionalized, there have been actual situations that are very similar. You will submit the report in three sections throughout the course, with a due date for each section. These due dates are posted on the Course Schedule.
The Course Project should be six to eight pages in length, with an additional Title page and Reference page(s). The Reference page should include a minimum of four different scholarly, academically accepted books and/or journals used. Do not use Wikipedia and similar encyclopedia websites, such as about.com or buzzle.com. 1. A large hydroelectric dam built in the 1950s and 60s created a 1-million acre impoundment, and it has been a major means of both producing electricity and flood control for many decades. In early spring each year, the water level above the dam is lowered to allow a reservoir for upstream snow melt and runoff later released downstream in a controlled fashion. This annual event has drawn no notice until this past spring, when a Native American tribe whose reservation borders on the impoundment came forward to claim that an ancient burial ground had been revealed less than a mile above the dam when the water level was lowered. To them, this was sacred ground and disturbing the bones of their ancestors was tantamount to desecration. Citing both 19th century treaty agreements and contracts with the U.S. government at the time the dam was built concerning the sanctity of holy grounds, the tribe insists that the burial grounds cannot be submerged again and that the water level must be maintained at its present, lower level. They also say that their culture does not permit the removal and reburial of the remains and that the federal government has recognized the rights of Native Americans to protect their holy places. Anthropologists have surveyed the site and report that indeed it is an ancient burial ground, but that the people may be from a much older group than those presently claiming ancestry.

Non-native, alien, species often have a devastating impact on native species. This is especially true when the non-natives become invasive and overwhelm the native species through increased competition or predation. In this lab, we investigate the effect of non-native plant cover on native species diversity in coastal sage scrub. Coastal sage scrub (CSS) is a community characterized by a diverse assemblage of plants many of which are endemic to southern California. Some species are shallow rooted and survive the summer by dropping their leaves and going dormant. Other species are deeply rooted and survive the summer drought by accessing ground water deep in the soil, and by conserving water by closing their stomata, pores in the leaves that allow for the diffusion of CO2 in, but also allow H2O to diffuse out. We have lost most of our CSS habitat to development, and in the remaining patches, invasive non-native grasses and annuals often outcompete the native species after disturbance, which results in the conversion of shrublands to non-native grasslands.
Restoration attempts reverse the conversion of CSS by removing non-native species and introducing native species through planting or seeding. In one sense, you can think of restoration as instant succession. However, restoration is tricky, and projects often fail, or require constant maintenance to remove non-natives.
The purpose of this lab is to investigate the relationship between invasive species cover, and native species diversity in restored and un-restored CSS habitat. We will compare the following:
· Invasive vs. native cover in restored and un-restored areas of CSS.
· Invasive cover vs. species diversity in restored and un-restored CSS.

Seeking Food Rights is a good model because it suggests different areas of life that are significant to food security and food sovereignty in Uzbekistan (Chapters 1-7) and in the US in Chapter 8. Note that in the Uzbek case, questions of inequality by class, urban-rural differences, gender, and ethnicity are important to food security and food sovereignty for various people and groups. The government and/or market’s control over agriculture, land, and people’s shopping opportunities are also important to consider. On a global scale, the amount of food and kinds of food that are imported and exported from a country influences food security and food sovereignty. An important part of our course is researching information on diversity and multiculturalism and its social, cultural, and ethical impact upon individual citizens, groups of people, and society at large.
Below are four scenarios pertaining to cultural diversity. For this assignment, you will prepare a research paper that focuses on one of these scenarios, analyzing what happened, what the consequences either are or might be, and how the situation can be corrected and or prevented in the future. 1. A large hydroelectric dam built in the 1950s and 60s created a 1-million acre impoundment, and it has been a major means of both producing electricity and flood control for many decades. In early spring each year, the water level above the dam is lowered to allow a reservoir for upstream snow melt and runoff later released downstream in a controlled fashion. This annual event has drawn no notice until this past spring, when a Native American tribe whose reservation borders on the impoundment came forward to claim that an ancient burial ground had been revealed less than a mile above the dam when the water level was lowered. To them, this was sacred ground and disturbing the bones of their ancestors was tantamount to desecration. Citing both 19th century treaty agreements and contracts with the U.S. government at the time the dam was built concerning the sanctity of holy grounds, the tribe insists that the burial grounds cannot be submerged again and that the water level must be maintained at its present, lower level. They also say that their culture does not permit the removal and reburial of the remains and that the federal government has recognized the rights of Native Americans to protect their holy places. Anthropologists have surveyed the site and report that indeed it is an ancient burial ground, but that the people may be from a much older group than those presently claiming ancestry.

Gender, prepare a Research Paper with the following components:
a. Summarize the pertinent historical, political, social, economic and cultural factors related to your chosen aspect of diversity.
b. Consider and summarize any relevant developmental theory models related to your chosen aspect of diversity.
c. In regard to your chosen aspect of diversity, identify and evaluate the relevant laws or programs that have either helped or restricted access to care and support.
d. Evaluate how your chosen aspect of diversity, in combination with two other aspects of diversity, can lead to increased needs or issues. For example, if someone is female, African American, and lesbian, will there be additional challenges? Select any combination of 3 aspects of diversity to discuss.
e. Describe at least two resources currently available in your area for someone needing special services related to your chosen aspect of diversity.
f. Explain how your personal characteristics will either complement or conflict with this diversity issue. Consider your own biases and prejudices or those of your family of origin.
g. Discuss relevant concerns, cautions or insights necessary for you to be a culturally competent human service professional.
Writing the Research Paper
The Research Paper:
1. Must be eight- to ten double-spaced pages in length, and formatted according to APA style.
2. Must include a title page with the following:
a. Title of paper
b. Student’s name
c. Course name and number
d. Instructor’s name
e. Date submitted
3. Must begin with an introductory paragraph that has a succinct thesis statement.
4. Must address the topic of the paper with critical thought.
5. Must end with a conclusion that reaffirms your thesis.
6. Must use at least seven scholarly sources.
7. Must document all sources in APA style

Three scholarly research journals, ethnographies and ethnologies to be used as the primary sources of information. c. Identification of the chosen cultures primary mode of subsistence. (Foragers, Horticulturalists, Pastoralists, Emerging Agriculturalists, Agrarian States or Industrialists) d. Identification of the three aspects of culture which will be used in the Final Cultural Research Paper from the list below: § Beliefs and values § Economic organization § Gender relations § Kinship § Political organization § Sickness and healing § Social change § Social organization The above information should be presented in an outline and must include an introductory paragraph with a succinct thesis and a properly formatted reference page.
