The Amsterdam Free Library had a successful year in 2010, despite budget cuts. The library saw over 76,000 patron visits and added over 2,000 new items to its collection. It offered many educational and cultural programs, including a summer reading program, computer classes, art displays, and book discussion groups. The library also served as a community hub and resource center through its broadband access, student tutoring center, and role in local history preservation. Looking ahead, the library plans to expand its services and programs in 2011 while continuing its mission of connecting the community and providing opportunities through information, technology, and creative activities.
Today we have visitors from a Turkey. Therefore, we have made a presentation of the Danish Library Association and our special organization's structure. We will also present the Danish think tank Future Libraries and their study
Economic Value of Public Libraries
Danish Library Association
Danish Library Association has a special association structure of library professionals as well as local politicians on the Council. The President is always politicians and local politicians always constitute the majority.
I think this mix of politicians and library professionals Works in a constructive way. Because the professionals inspire the politicians and the politicians give a good insight into how we need to prioritize. And other times it functions inversely.
So I hope we also in the future will be able to get this symbiosis to function and that local politicians want to put as much thought into the matter and will work in our Board, like they do today.

Libraries of the Future – Knowledge, debate and Network
The Danish Think Tank has the ambition to:
• Produce knowledge, analysis and cross-disciplinary activities about the future role of the libraries
• Generate professional, public and political debate and awareness of the role of libraries now and in the future
A bottom-up initiative
The Danish libraries face many challenges such as digitalization and changes in expectations and demands on both physical and digital services; lack of public awareness of library services, changes in library user behavior, lack of political awareness and changes in the role of the librarian. The Think Tank was initiated by the Danish Library Association (DB).
The Think Tank is a two-year project, started October 2012, and co-financed by the participating libraries, library organizations and central library players
The Economic Value of Public Libraries
The Danish Think Tank Libraries of the Future & Copenhagen Economics has
conducted the first study on the economic impact of the Danish public library. The
Danish public libraries provide multiple services to the Danish public today,
which overall seems to be well received by the public. However, the
contributions are often measured in terms of library use (e.g. how many books
were borrowed) and user satisfaction surveys, which are far from adequate when
we want to discuss the role libraries play in modern society. This study digs
deeper and provide the first assessment of the economic value of the public
libraries in Denmark.

The goal of the International Librarians Networking Program (ILNP) is to assist librarians from around the world to network and expand their skills in librarianship through a cooperative and collaborative program. The program is designed to be self guided, allowing participants to form a collaborative relationship with one another for four months and the opportunity to continue networking after the program ends. The International Librarians Networking Program is part of the American Library Association International Relations Round Table.
The 2021 cohort comprised 62 people from 27 countries selected for pair networking. There had been 270 original applicants from 39 different countries. I was paired with Dr Win Shih, Director of Integrated Library Systems at the University of Southern California. The ILNP final project was to create an academic poster arising from the conversations during the four month period. We completed one on Diversity Equality Inclusion initiatives in UCC & USC.

We Heart Libraries presentation to Herts CCAndy Darley
Presentation given to Hertfordshire County Council libraries transformation topic group, December 14 2012, on the impact of cuts to library opening hours.
The new director of The Danish Library Association, Mr. Michel Steen-Hansen, gives a short introduction to The Danish Library Association based on a special association structure with local politicians as well as library professionals on the Council.
A main theme of this introduction will be to what degree political consensus is needed in this kind of organizational setup.
The Danish Library Association is organized on the basis of a number of local associations working on regional level. These local associations elect representatives to the Council of the National association. The Council elects from within its members an Executive Committee with ten members including a president, who is always a politician, and two vice presidents, one a politician and the other a library professional.
Michel Steen-Hansen will then introduce some current issues in focus,
including free an equal access in the modern society and some new programs

Here's the abstract:
Augmented Reality (AR) has a range of affordances that resonate with learning theory. Reflecting the early stage of the technology however, much existing research into AR focuses on technical issues and is based on prototype systems not suitable for end user deployment.
This presentation gives an insight into experiences gained in the European ARiSE (Augmented Reality in School Environments) project, which aims to develop a robust and affordable AR teaching platform suitable for deployment in schools.
In order to evaluate the tabletop AR learning platform, three consecutive prototypes of educational applications were produced, each reflecting the evolving technological capabilities of the platform and addressing different pedagogical approaches. These ranged from process visualisation in a human biology setting based on behaviourist and cognitive approaches, through guided construction of chemical elements based on constructivist ideas, to knowledge creation through communication and negotiation of meaning around cultural heritage objects with peers from another country, based on theories of social learning. The first two applications have been evaluated in summer schools involving video observations and interviews with secondary school students from Romania, Latvia and Germany.
Preliminary results indicate a high acceptance rate for the AR learning platform amongst students. The main advantages were seen in the 3D visualisation capabilities and the haptic user interface, which led to increased motivation, better concentration during learning activities, and faster and more accurate understanding of the learning content. Balancing these positive results were technical and usability issues that had a negative impact on the learning process.

Summary from presentations by Michel Steen-Hansen at a HIBOLIRE seminar in Copenhagen, December 14-15, 2009
Will the library spirit continue in the future?
Yes…..
– if we redefine the Library in a political context
The question then is, how to make the political decision-makers understand, promote and finance these changes.
I think our major challenges just now is to describe a new narrative frame to get public recognition
New narrative frame for the libraries
We need to create a new narrative frame, or should I say, create a definition for what the modern library is and we need to keep debating how to describe it.
We need to develop strategies to gain access to the politicians to convince them of the continued relevance of libraries in modern society.
See the hole Summary http://biblioteksdebat.blogspot.com/2009/12/will-library-spirit-continue-in-future.html
Today I make presentation at NEXT LIBRARY in the session
REACH OUT - HOW TO ORGANIZE AND RUN A STRONG LIBRARY ORGANIZATION IN 2011
I’m going to tell a little about Danish libraries, the special structure in The Danish Libraryassociation, and how we influence the political system, or cooperate directly whit the politicians. see http://biblioteksdebat.blogspot.com/
Envisioning the library of the future is a major research project undertaken by the Arts Council in 2012/13 that will help us to understand the future for libraries, and how we can enable them to develop.

1. Amsterdam Free Library –
a place to connect, engage
& discover. 2010 was a year of
exciting changes as we worked to connect
community & open opportunity.
Heart of the Community. 76,215 patron visits to
the library over the past year reminds us that we
continue to be one of the community's most
essential resources. Information, technology,
creativity and a sense of community are delivered
to all of our patrons.
Community Support. Fundraisers and friends
continue to help us support our operations. Budget
cuts still threaten the services we offer, yet our
patrons have been valued partners in lessening that
impact. 2011 will be no different. We need our
community’s support in order to support our
community.
Outreach & Creativity. The 2010 Festival of Windmills
showcased our creative spirit allowing us to engage
our community in an expression of art, history and
culture. More than 50 groups of library friends
decorated windmills for display and auction at a gala
celebration of cultural heritage.
Annual Report 2010
Looking Forward. 2011 will bring a series of new
initiatives along with expanded services to existing
programs. With nearly 1000 new patrons last year, the
library is committed to delivering its vital resources to the
community despite federal, state and local cut-backs.
Summer reading programs, Teen-Tech Week and
computer classes are just a few of the exciting events to
expect in the coming year.
Our Continued Mission. Amsterdam Free Library remains
a resource for ideas, technology and opportunity.
Through the much appreciated generosity of our donors
and supporters, patrons continue to gain access to
essential tools required for success in 21st
Century
education, job markets and civic responsibility.

2. Broadband Technology
Opportunity Program –
Computer centers provide access to
workforce, education and E-Government
services & training.
Leaders in Technology. As one of only 30 libraries
across upstate New York to achieve selection as a
Broadband Technology Opportunity partner, our
library strives to counter an at-risk population and
promote digital literacy training, workforce skills
development and education support.
Public Computer Center. Supplemented by various
state & local job-seeking resources, our 10-unit public
computer center and training staff provide open lab
time for individuals to create resumes, perform job
searches and receive technology instruction to better
prepare for a 21st
Century job market.
Student Education Center. Staffed with a NYS-
certified teacher, the student education center hosts
six computer workstations, a collection of resources in
literature & film and after-school tutoring. As a
committed partner in education, the library works to
ensure all students achieve through learning and
application.
Connect Annual Report 2010
Opening Doors. Your community library is now a hub for
broadband technology. Thousands of patrons who would
not ordinarily have access to the World Wide Web now
have technology at their fingertips. Comprehensive
computer class series, E-services and instant
communications all make for a connected community and
opened opportunities.
Tomorrow’s Vision. 2011 will be a year of growth for the
broadband technology program. Video-conferencing
services will enable local business partners to engage in
professional networking and allow students to explore the
globe through virtual fieldtrips. Language labs will
promote better understanding within our community
while social networking and teen-tech media will foster
increased conversation among our family, friends and
patrons.

3. Children & Young Adult
Department & Services–
Students and their families get involved in
reading & creating. Group story-hours,
summer reading, crafts and fun are all
found at the library.
Engaging Young Minds. Programs like the library’s
summer reading initiative encourage our youth to
explore learning through literature. The program also
boasts a number of performers from outside
organizations who come to help make stories jump
from the pages and into our world.
Enriching Experience. The library rewards our
participating students with special presentations and
celebrations of their successes like our annual end-of-
summer pizza party. The most valuable prize,
however, is the love of reading that is instilled within
each child who participates in the program.
Getting Crafty. Creative art is a teaching tool the
library uses to help our students appreciate the world
of literature. An integral part of our programs
involves library and family members reading stories
while working on arts & crafts projects with the
children that relate to the theme of the literature.
Engage Annual Report 2010
Express Yourself. All of the library’s programs for children
and young adults incorporate catchy and interesting
themes to help make learning fun. Stories, crafts and art
projects are selected to illustrate each overall concept or
theme. Students use this creative outlet to broaden their
understanding of literature and experience better
communication with family & educators.
It Takes A Village. Amsterdam Free Library is a symbol of
community experience. Various community partners as
well as parents and guardians volunteer their time and
resources in order to make each program successful for
each child who participates. As our family continues to
grow, we welcome you and your family too. Volunteer,
give back and make a difference in your community.

4. Throw open the window of
opportunity at your library–
It’s more than shelves full of books;
Amsterdam Free Library is a place of
community gathering, fostering ideas,
making friends and unearthing discoveries.
Talk it out. Bring your book and bring your lunch to
the library’s next Brown-Bag Book Discussion. Each
month our library patrons choose a popular or
interesting title to read independently and then come
together at the library for conversation, food and
interaction with friends.
Master Class. As a supporter and partner in the arts
and humanities, the library hosts several workshops
throughout the year which introduce writing, reading
and poetry to our patrons. The 2010 Writers & Poets
series featured many local artists whose work we
celebrate and whose stories we adore.
Sharing Resources. Our vast collection of resources is
important not only to our patrons, but to members of
surrounding libraries as well. Thanks to lending
agreements, Amsterdam Free Library mutually shares
items with other local libraries to broaden our
availability of material. In 2010, more than 15,000 of
these lending transactions took place.
Discover Annual Report 2010
Time Machine. Thanks to the efforts of library staff and
history specialists, our extensive collection now includes
resources on local history and the American Civil War.
Learn more about the fascinating role Amsterdam and
the surrounding region has played in the unfolding of
history. Discover the mysteries and little-known facts
flanking the shelves of our own historic building.
Let’s Do It Together. Amsterdam Reads is one of the
community’s most exciting yearly projects which asks all
of our library friends to vote for and read their favorite
book together. A great number of patrons tirelessly work
to promote the library and community reading. This
year’s selection of Amsterdam Reads features a local
author who chronicles his life as a jockey in Amsterdam’s
rich history as a thoroughbred racing center.
