Prototyping Interaction with Video ScenariosDavid Sherwin
Aaron Rincover and I presented this workshop at Seattle Make-a-Thon on November 6, 2010, sponsored by IxDA Seattle, AIGA Seattle, and Interact.
When designing interactions that transcend singular devices and form the basis of device ecosystems, wireframes just don’t cut it. Much of the interactions you’re looking to define and refine are evoked through motion, sound, haptics, and other variables that can’t be easily documented without "dancing about architecture." In these situations, it’s often most effective to create video scenarios that describe how an interaction would happen out in the real world. These scenarios are useful not only for explaining ideas to your clients—they’re an effective way of capturing prototypes to see if they make sense and feel real.
Over the course of this workshop, we explored the various flavors of video scenario that you can create, depending on the design problems you’re seeking to solve. Then we’ll spent the balance of our time working in small teams to create a short interaction vignette about gestural input to activate a teleportation device.

23. To Whom It May Concern:
This is a letter of hearty recommendation for Annemarie Crivelli, much loved and respected Senior Interactive Producer
at HL2. HL2 is one of the leading digital marketing agencies in the Northwest, in part, because of the good work
Annemarie did for us during her tenure here.
Annemarie came to HL2 in 2007 and worked with many of our key clients, the most important of which was Microsoft
Hardware. If you go to the site today www.microsoft.com/hardware, you will see the Genesis of her work. She also
managed a very technical redesign of the Money Mailer site www.moneymailer.com.
Annemarie brings a crazy mix of goodness to the job.
1. She’s great with clients. She has instant credibility in a meeting and clients trust her with their digital
marketing woes. This is a rare quality. Clients are looking for a strategic equal in the room; an agency
resource that adds value. Annemarie isn’t afraid to step up and own the white board.
2. Her technical chops are strong. We never encountered a situation that Annemarie couldn’t troubleshoot.
Her counsel to our dev teams and her ability to understand their needs as well as the client made her the
perfect diplomat.
3. She’s loyal and sincere. In a world where an employee’s loyalty is only as good as their most recent
offer, it’s refreshing to find someone who’s really willing to invest in the long haul. She’s not a quitter.
But she did eventually leave HL2 as an FTE in 2009. Really can’t blame her. Most of us in the great, gray Northwest
would choose to move to LA if we had the guts. But Annemarie left on the best of terms and continues to consult with us
to this day. If we had an LA office she would be my first hire.
Should you have any specific questions about Annemarie’s performance as a Senior Producer at HL2, please don’t
hesitate to call me.
Sincerely,
Don Low, Partner

To Whom It May Concern,
This letter is to serve as a professional reference for Annemarie Crivelli. In my role as Vice President, Annemarie
reported to me at HL2 as a Senior Interactive Producer from July 2007 through February 2009. The first word that comes
to mind about Annemarie is passion. She has a strong passion for excellence, innovation, and teamwork.
Annemarie initially took on the challenge of managing some of the key projects on Microsoft. The Microsoft Hardware
group was a long standing client that needed some major retooling in all areas. Annemarie completely overhauled the
entire work flow process including the financial structure. She created new programs and through great collaboration
brought synergy internally at HL2 and with the client. The results were significant in bringing streamlined (documented)
process and more importantly turning an account around from a loss into profitability in less than a year.
Annemarie then took on a broader task of bringing structure to the entire interactive department. She brought a traffic
process that will improve HL2 for years to come saving time and money and better connecting the print side of HL2 to
the interactive.
New business is the key to growing any creative agency. Annemarie was critical to gaining work at Yahoo. The
dedication to building a great relationship with the client is one of Annemarie’s core strengths. It is especially a
challenge for building relationships when the client is in another city. Annemarie quickly gained the clients trust and
drove the HL2 team to deliver creative / innovative solutions on time and on budget. This was one of the many examples
of the strength of the relationship Annemarie had with the creative department at HL2.
25. Another highlight of my working with Annemarie was on the Microsoft Mobile account. Annemarie was a key
contributor to winning this significant business for HL2. Her focused research and knowing the needs of the client along
with her keen understanding of technology made this a success and established this category for HL2. Her ability to be
flexible and manage strong personalities yet insure her ideas are incorporated was an ingredient for HL2 becoming the
agency of record for this piece of the Mobile consumer team.
Annemarie would make a great addition to any company. She is resourceful, smart, takes initiative, is action oriented,
drives for results, has high integrity, works hard, is customer focused, has open communication, is organized, flexible,
and creative.
Please contact me for any additional details.

To Whom It May Concern,
Annemarie Crivelli asked that I provide a letter of recommendation in support of her current job search. I had the entire
letter written, then realized it felt generic and canned, and ultimately conveyed none of what I actually think of Her. So
here’s the story.
I’ve been working with and leading creative people for over twenty years. I know talent when I see it, and I really know
when someone has the ability to combine technical skills with emotional intelligence-which rarely happens. Annemarie
knows how to get the job done, but in a way that motivates and inspires. When she informed me she was leaving HL2 I
felt as though I’d been socked in the gut. And the entire team felt the same way. And so did her clients.
Annemarie is a rock-star. She is a person you want on your team. Period. She will make your clients superstars,
positively push your bottom line, and treat everyone in her environment with kindness and respect.
If I chose to open my own agency, I would hire Annemarie in a heartbeat.
I would be more than happy to discuss Annemarie at length, just give me a call.
Sincerely,
Ross West

27. To Whom it May Concern, 12/12/12
It’s been my pleasure to work with Annemarie Crivelli for the last 3years here at The VIA Agency located in
Portland, ME. As the Media Director, I have worked closely with her to build out our Interactive capabilities.
She has been instrumental in helping us to standardize our process to become more efficient as well as
deliver better work for our clients across the board.
She was critical to our winning a piece of the Samsung digital account and in developing innovative creative
units to help launch their tablet. She worked hand-in-hand with our creative teams to develop a “slurp” unit
that dynamically pulled live newspaper content from their website directly into our tablet ad unit on NY
Times.com, Wired.com and CNET.com.
She then took the agency lead on the Advanced Publications account to develop an integrated campaign to
help drive traffic to their newspaper websites and mobile apps. She helped develop the positioning strategy;
communications plan and oversaw the campaign development and implementation into the marketplace.
I highly recommend Annemarie, she is smart, passionate and knows how to get things done on time and on
budget.
